Great sandwiches, potato salad, and pasta salad. Italian sandwich is outstanding! And great folks working there. Fun place to eat.

I started with a delicious rum cocktail and ordered the savory stroganoff mac and cheese, which was rich and satisfying. My son went with the kids' hot dog meal and enjoyed every bite. The atmosphere was a highlight--there's a great indoor-outdoor feel that really adds to the experience. Service was attentive, and everything was clean and well-kept. Overall, a really positive experience and a place I'd happily return to.

I expected fresh and flavorful --instead I got reheated and regretful! The fish and chips arrived dark brown, heavy, and dripping in oil. Not golden. Not crispy. Not fresh. This was unmistakably refried fish. The kind that looks like it was an abandoned order tossed back into the grease instead of cooked properly for the customer who ACTUALLY paid for it. Refrying doesn't make food fresh. It makes it lazy. Complements of the chef du jour! The fries tasted like they'd been lingering under a heat lamp, contemplating their life, choices. Disappointing, stale, and lifeless. And the coleslaw? Bless it. Overwhelmingly mayonnaise-forward with barely a whisper of vinegar and none of that classic celery seed brightness that gives southern slaw It's backbone. It wasn't terrible --just timid and forgettable. Which sadly was still better than the leftovers with ambition, refried fish and chips, I received. In conclusion, Fish and chips is simple comfort food but simple requires care. Fresh drop. Clean oil. Cook it once. Serve it hot. That's not a high bar. I don't mind paying for a good meal, but, I expected fresh and flavorful. I got reheated and regretful. I guess the cooking staff take Lazy Sundays literal!!

So, what do you do when you're staying in Hendersonville for a couple of nights at a hotel and you…read moredon't have a car? You give thanks for being within walking distance of so many big chains. I may not patronize chains much while at home (no judgement; just a habit) but when in Rome, eat Italian food... or something like that. I set off from my hotel with nothing more than a direction and a hankering for a bacon cheeseburger* (with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and grilled onions) and fries. It's my (old) go-to order at Five Guys and I didn't see any need to change it up. Oh, and a root beer. Can't forget the drink. If you've been to one 5 Guys, you've been to them all. This one is pretty decent for a few reasons. 1.) For whatever reason, my order cost less here than it did/goes on West End. I don't know how that's possible with a standard order from a chain but I wasn't knocking it. 2.) Despite the chain energy, I found the staff to be pleasant (ie I didn't just order and step to the side; sometimes it's the little things). 3.) I enjoyed the high lighting and clean environs. Light makes the brain think 'clean' but this location actually was/is clean. Again, the little things. The exorbitant price keeps me from granting the fourth star but I think a person could do far worse than dinner from 5 Guys on a cold early winter night and lacking a car. *My order was a good size. I see from other reviews that size and quantity have shifted down. At these prices, that's a hard sell. YMMV.

Personally, I don't see what all the hype is. The burgers are decent but expensive. If you add all…read morethe toppings, maybe a slightly better value. You get a lot of fries, but I would prefer a smaller, less expensive option. Its fine when with a family and sharing portions, but it is way too much if you are alone. The service was fine, although they needed someone to wipe down the tables and clean up a bit more.

4.5 The new year is…read moreas good as time as ever to try a new (to you/me) restaurant in an unvisited (by me/you) part of the midstate. Old Hickory Blvd is to the Nashville area as Peachtree is to Atlanta: it's everywhere and nowhere at the same time and no one knows where you are if you say you're on it. Well, needing lunch on a Friday in the new year, I made my way onto Old Hickory to see where it took me. It led me to... Old Hickory and Granddaddy's Original Hot Chicken Shack. It had been on my radar for a while but I never had a reason to me in this part of the county. I decided to make time on this day. Besides the potential gastric distress I find myself avoiding hot chicken because of how colonized and commodified it's become. What was a community staple (and not a 'Nashville' food) has become something that's turned into a chain item, largely without the very people who made it a thing (creators and patrons). Incredibly frustrating. So, when I decide to eat it, I want to make sure I do so responsibly and with consideration. Hence, Granddaddy's. I parked in the ample lot and walked in to find a small dining room that smelled incredible. I was greeted with an authentic smile (you can see it in the eyes and hear it in the voice) and asked (first) how I was doing and (secondly) what I'd like. I answered ('well; thanks for asking' and 'shredded chicken sandwich & fries to go, please.'). In all my professional eating*, I don't think I'd ever had shredded hot chicken. I was going to learn that day. I sat down and watched TV as my food was prepared. After the conclusion on my show, my food was ready. I thanked the folks behind the counter, smiled, waved, and hit the bricks. I noticed that I made a muscle when carrying the bag. This was a good sign. It was also a long drive back to my house. I got home and realized why I had to exert effort to lift my food: it was huge. You definitely get your money's worth. On an over-sized bun, I had an extremely generous amount of shredded hot chicken (medium), cheese, ranch, and pickles. As you might imagine, the flavor combo was A+. What you might not have bet on, though, was the texture win of the sandwich. The soft bun, shredded chicken, creamy ranch, and crunchy pickles added up to a memorable chew with every bite. The fries weren't merely a side. They demanded your attention: a generous portion of seasoned fries that lost neither heat nor snap on the drive from Old Hickory to my home. No matter where you live in the midstate, if you profess to enjoy hot chicken, you owe it to your mouth to make it to Granddaddy's. It was one of the best lunches I'd had in a while. I still think about it. *It's true.
