I got picked up from the airport and this is really close - just down the hill and one of your first options. And a good one. They were busy, so it took a couple minutes to confirm we could seat ourselves and get menus, but the ensuing service was good. I had the Honey Sriracha Chicken Sandwich - and it's a massive stack of chicken, slaw, and pear, drenched in a nicely spicy-sweet sauce. Delicious, if MESSY (be prepared). The sauce was mild to me, but would be appropriately spicy for most. The honey balances the Sriracha vinegarness, as does the pear - really balanced sandwich! Sweet potato fries were super hot and nicely seasoned - another win. Paired with Jeremiah Johnson Scotch Ale, and ngl, I made a great combo. She had The Grizzly, which is essentially a smoked brisket French dip, and the brisket was good, but the au jus was more thick and greasy than expected - could've been made into a thin gravy pretty easily - was still given a thumbs up though. I ate here for the first time yesterday and really enjoyed the experience. The food was good. The selection of beers on tap was good. The vibe was good. The service was excellent. My girlfriend was catching a flight out of town yesterday and it's super close and convenient to the airport. Not the fanciest place in Billings but a great spot to grab a beer and some good food. I'm looking forward to coming back and checking out the roof patio this Summer! read more

It's a brewery, not out to impress or reinvent the wheel, just serve hearty food at a reasonable price. The patio gives a nice elevated view of Billings, a hard commodity to come by. The food was fine but the competition is harsh for brewery food as they're abundant in Billings. The fish tacos were a big highlight and this is a great place if you just want a decent meal at a decent spot. read more

I really liked this place. The food was pretty delicious. The cheese curds here were so much better than the ones you get at Meadowlark Brewing. They're packed with garlic and the ranch you dip them in is pretty great. My girlfriend got the steak salad. The steak was cooked just how she asked, medium. The salad was full of dark green leaves. If you've read a review by me, it grinds my gears to see nothing buy light green/white iceberg lettuce in a salad. So, good job here 406, using nutrient dense and flavorful lettuce! I got the pesto chicken sandwich. This was really delicious. The chicken was pretty tender (could have been a little more tender), but it was definitely 5 steps up from the chicken sandwiches served at Diamond X brewing, which are just dry little fillets. The beer and cocktail selection was pretty decent. Our table of three had no problem finding a beverage that we liked and ordered more than one of. We ate out on the patio and enjoyed the environment since it was so sunny outside. The service was just slow enough to notice, but it won't stop me from returning. I'd highly recommend this place if you've been eating at the other mentioned places. I kind of hate directly comparing the food at these places, but for all of these plates to cost the same, they should be made of the same quality and flavor or the prices should be cheaper at the other restaurants. We were very excited by the online menu shown for this establishment. We had our hearts set on the calamari appetizer, my husband was going to order the Catch of the Day with roasted vegetables, and I had decided on the Clams and Linguine. My son picked this place to try for dinner during our 1st visit to Billings. This frontier-themed sports bar supports local high school and college teams (but no Rocky Mountain College jersey on the wall??) which is great and plenty of tvs all around - making it easy for us to watch the National Championship game (which was a blowout by halftime #GoDawgs!). Our party ordered 3 items and sides, which did come out promptly even during a major sporting event, albeit on a Monday night. The Grilled Chicken Breast sandwich was nicely done, where the chicken was not too dry, but also not extremely juciy either. They either bake their own buns or get them from a good local bakery fresh each day. The double burger was big - 2 large, hand-formed patties which were really good and juicy, and it hit me... why are so many burgers places so good in Billings? Answer: Montana grass-fed free-range beef and a meat processing plant about 2 miles north of downtown. Freshness matters. So why only 2 stars... here is where the experience and meal goes downhill... the AWFUL beef brisket. Experienced grillers know brisket needs to be slow cooked for AT LEAST 8 hours (preferably 12) and undercooked brisket is tough to bite off and far chewy-er than it should be. Another way to identify undercooked brisket is meat with lots of fat on it The reason for the slow long cooking time is to allow all the fat to melt, and infuse all the meat so that you get juicy tender, cant-be-sliced-because-it falls-apart brisket. Well, this beef brisket sandwich was served with uniformly sliced strips of tough, chewy and very fatty brisket. The meat was a MAJOR disappointment. The side of Buffalo Tater Tots I tried were encased in a powdery, crunchy cocoon of Buffao Powder (no sauce) and NOT in a good way. The watery blue cheese was the only thing that made the tots edible. With a half-eaten sandwich in front of me and most of the tots still on the plate, i politely let the waiter know that my meal was really not good at all and exactly what was wrong with the meal. He casually apologized, began clearing plates, and ask if anyone needed a refill on their waters or drinks. At a MINIMUM, I was hoping that he would speak to a Manager - that they would come talk to us to see what can be done. I was hoping he would offer me to order something else to replace the really bad meal. Or at least to take that meal off the bill. Nope... nada. If you go to 406 to watch a game with some drinks, the burges seems to be the go-to menu item. Stay away from the brisket at all costs. They should remove this from the menu since they clearly don't know how to prepare it properly. Try the Buffalo tater tots at-your-own-risk, and don't expect anything in the way of customer service to attempt to right a bad experience. I I believe in supporting a business that supports the local community so I might stop in when I am in town looking for just a burger and a beer. And likely WILL seek out the owner next time to share my initial experience. Small businesses often never fix what they don't know is a problem. read more

I thought the place was clean and had a good look to it. It was easy to be seated and has a nice outdoor space. The attached picture was supposedly a fish taco on a corn tortilla. It may have been the smallest tortilla I have even seen. All of that color and yet little flavor. We specifically tried the place out after seeing photos of fish tacos here. Needless to say, we were catfished. The carne asada tacos were ok, simple, and had a lot of meat. The service was abysmal at best and the place was very loud. I can not say enough good things about this restaurant. The food is delicious, the staff is fantastic, the portions are HUGE. We've tried most of the menu and have yet to find anything we don't love. If you're in town, definitely put 406 on your list of places to eat. One note, this place is a local favorite, so it's busy and they don't take reservations. There's lots of seating but keep in mind you might have to wait a bit before you sit down. Having said that, I promise, it's worth it. read more

We got into town late in the eve on a Sunday. I didn't expect many places to be open, especially anywhere serving good food. The hotel desk lady suggested the 406. Kudus to her! There weren't many folks in here as expected. We were greeted immediately and sat in the booth of our choosing. This is a clean nice place that is staffed by some friendly helpful folks. I had a very nice, and big, side salad and a big order of spicy wings. Great choice! They were excellent, and the salad was crispy fresh. My wife had a chicken taco salad that she thoroughly destroyed. We were happy campers after a 10 hr road trip. 406 will be a great place to come to on our next trip thru. read more

Live close to Billings. Wanted to try something new wheb we came to town. Came here to have a beer and appetizer.. We sat at the bar and our Waitress Grace was amazing. Super bubbly and joined in with our conversations like we have know eachother forever. I ordered a Mia Tie which is my go to drink and she made it fantasticly!! Hold the salt...their bar food is usually tasty, but last Sunday pm the beer cheese soup & brisket sand were soooooo salty....we tried diluting the soup with water, but it was inedible. Service: Adam, our server was excellent!, so accommodating. He tried to fix the salty soup issue, offered other side items, finally discounted our soup from the bill. He checked back several times..I had fish & soup instead of fish & chips...my bad. The fish, however, was cooked perfectly..not overcooked or over breaded. It came with malt vinegar packets, which I like, but no tartar sauce...server Adam checked & reported the kitchen was out of Tarter sauce, they were "making more but it might take some time"...I finally asked for a side of mayo & pickles so I could make my own. Someone from the kitchen arrived with a side of tartar sauce. Ambiance...we were inside at high top near windows. The balcony looked inviting, but was full. The rooftop when they get it going will be amazing!! Potentially, this place could be the bomb, but could also just bomb. First time visiting. Food was very good and waitstaff was friendly and courteous. And that ends the good portion of this review. I sat down at a table on the patio. It took 13 minutes before waiter came out to take drink order. Got my drink in about 5 minutes. 5 minutes later I placed food order. It too 43 minutes to get my food. Way to long. It didn't look that busy to me but maybe my idea of busy is different from theirs. On a side note I overheard waiter telling another table that he has seen many cars get bumped in the parking lot and people drove away without leaving contact info or trying to find the car owner. read more

Got here at 6:22 PM and it is now 7:12 PM and still absolutely no food. We ordered a sandwich and fried shrimp! Doesn't take a rocket scientist to build a club sandwich and fry some shrimp. Waitress has come by twice and told us they're just waiting on the shrimp. I guess someone is out catching them? The service and overall customer satisfaction with restaurants in Billings is literally horrendous! Food arrived at the one hour mark. No one brought napkins, condiments or anything else. Pretty good spot--expensive for this type of faire and for the equivalent places in town. Nearly every appetizer was $9 or more. Hamburgers were $15. And they probably would be considered gourmet, but it was a stretch. The beers on tap were great and I was extremely happy with the choices and the idea of them being local. First of all, I never go into a restaurant wanting to make a bad review. My family and I went to the 406 Taproom specifically for the wings. We were seated by the most obnoxious large and loud party in the restaurant. Ok, it's a bar. Then they tell us they are out of wings. Total bummer, ok it happens. We order a dip with pita chips, but they are out of pita chips. The first beer I wanted they were also out of. It seamed that they are out of everything. Our server was nice and apologetic but had too many tables. The dip was actually awesome, but the other food was very mediocre. Then to top it off, they NO LONGER honor a military discount BECAUSE STAFF abused it in the past and applied a military discount to many people that were not veterans. Having heard mixed opinions about this place I was a little hesitant to visit. But, I'm glad I did. Locals will tell you that the rockpile (what used to be here) was essentially the same business with an older appearance, better food, and cheaper prices. When the new owners moved in they told the staff they were closing for Renovations and would hire them back-but then they were all laid off and an entirely new staff was hired. From what I could tell the current staff are great. I sat at the bar and ordered a beer and fish tacos as well as sweet potato fries. The fish tacos were pretty run of the mill. The slaw with mango salsa was generous and tasty. The fries were awesome. Thick cut and well-seasoned. The prices are not outrageous compared to other places in town. I'll be back read more
