Price fine -he asked me what I'd seen online and accepted the price I stated. His info on the extra charge for the 1995 or older car was pleasantly put and matched what I'd seen on the website. The test was done quickly and methodically. As he saw my battery was in a corroded state he told me how I could do some long term home repairs on the terminals and also topped up the water over the battery plates which he hoped would keep it in better shape in the meantime His attitude was "regular guy" and better than the new ownership place I went to last year. Just be careful with this guy! He will try to rip you off. He tried to sell his $20 smog check for $68. I did smog last year and paid only $20. When I told him that I paid only $20 he said it's impossible! I showed him my receipt which I still had in the car... and had to show him his Yelp add ($20). His job was done and I had no option financially I paid him $38, but I will never go back there. Ps. To be fair he is not busy, you'll be done quickly, and since he is not a mechanic I feel his only intention is to pass your smog and get paid. This is a one man show: on my visit he worked hard and quickly but was constantly interrupted by customers asking about where to wait (there's no lineup). Cash only. No ammenities (but there's a full City of Berkeley Library with 24/7 Free Wi-Fi across the street). Unlike other places they do list a price on the website, which is good. Coupons exist for better prices, so if you care, look around. Turns out my right front tire was flat (less than 10 psi), but the guy made no note of it, even though it looked hideously flat on the dynamometer. The experience was OK, but next time I'll splurge for the better overall experience at 7 Days a Week Smog Test on San Pablo, where I went last time. read more

4 Less charged my girlfriend $60 for a smog check, twice the fair price that you can find at any smog test station in Berkeley. They failed her because her engine light was on (an automatic fail, you don't even have to run the test), and did not explain this to her. They were also rude to me when I went in to ask why they charged her so much and why they did not explain to her why she failed. read more

Wow. I have been going to this Smog Check for years with very satisfactory results. The previous technician was a middle-aged guy, very nice, very clear about what was needed what what it would cost. I went in this morning and was greeted by a tall, young dude in sun-glasses who was kind of gruff. The price was almost twice what I paid last time I used them. I asked about internet deals. He said he didn't know. There were internet deals that everyone uses, apparently and that the older guy always told me about. He was quick but came back with a fail. The failure had nothing to do with my car's performance. It passed all the smog-related test. It had to do with this technician's visual inspections of my dashboard and engine. If these were indeed not compliant. He could have told me before he tested. I would have gotten them fixed and then brought the care back for the actual test. Instead, he failed the car and wants $48 for a retest. This borders on unethical in my book. I won't be coming back for the retest. I found a place that charges less than that for the test! read more

My husband was also impressed that Jason took time to help a lady who was struggling with the gas pump even though the smog check station is a separate business from the gas station. Beware of this place. The prices are good but... They live to nickel and dime customers. First off, it's cash only to get their advert prices. Bring cash or they'll tack on $5 to run a credit or debit card. Yes. $5. Their shop and their rules. Went to the little adjacent shop ATM to pull cash out and the tech scurried over saying he'd waive the $5 fee. Too late. Cash in hand with a $1 water bottle. Said he found religion and didn't want any negative YELP reviews. Also too late. He didn't charge extra for my SUV (bogus), but they do have that in their fine print. Beware. He did however did try to charge me extra because my DMV paperwork said I needed a STAR station. This is a bogus extra. Negotiate it down or even better, out of your fee. Or go somewhere else that doesn't charge this fee. It's the SAME test. Google it. It's simply a statistical measure of a shop. They tried to tack on $10 for this "STAR" test. You can see how the STAR + SUV + credit/debit scams start to quickly add up from their $28 out-the-door promo that gets you there in the first place. Two weekends later I bring my Prius in for a smog. It doesn't have a STAR requirement so he can't get me on that but he tries to get me for an extra $10 Prius "hybrid" fee. This is when I finally unloaded on him. Reminded him about his nickle and diming the last time. He charged me the $28 they list on YELP. Thank you Mr. Smog Tech. Businesses are free to charge whatever the customer will pay. I get that. But arm yourself with knowledge about what are real, accepted market norms. This place tends to get an older clientele. I came prepared: I knew about the Yelp deal, I had my DMV paperwork and cash. I also had a library card for the public library across the street. When I stopped in, there was a car in front of me. The check-in lady told me it would be about 15 minutes to do the car in front of me and then mine. She also explained the pricing, both if I passed and if I did not.
