    French dip sandwich

Stopped here for lunch and OMG sooo good! I had the French Dip sandwich, the best I've ever had. Friend had Brussel sprout salad, she loved it. Shrimp pasta was great! Highly recommend.

Great spot, historical and chill vibes. Fantastic martinis and excellent food. The pork belly was hands down some of the best I've ever had. Great service!

Very beautifully decorated downtown French restaurant. Had a reservation for a party of 10 for a birthday party, and this place did not disappoint. Everybody at the table loved their entrées. My wife Pam had a short ribs, and I had the pork chop dinner. Service was amazing. Food was prepared to perfection. We just had an excellent time. This was our first time at this restaurant, and it definitely will not be our last! Five stars all the way!

We will be back simply for the ambiance and the service. Our server was amazing! Kind and gave us great recommendations. However, I've had better french food. The quail was a little overcooked, the chicken francaise was soggy? Not sure if it was supposed to be like that or not. The riesling wowed me, a little bit on the drier side but still sweet enough for a good balance.

    Shrimp Provençal

Finished out 2025 with dinner at 39 Rue de Jean. We started with 2 types of Moules (mussels) - Mariniere and Provençal. They were both tasty but the Provençal, which was a spicy tomato base was my favorite. My bf got the Steak Tartare as an app, which was not his favorite. For my entree, I split the Shrimp Provençal, which was a shrimp pasta with a similar sauce to the mussels and a caesar salad. If you filled up on Moules and bread like me, this was a great option. Everyone else enjoyed their entrees as well.

Wonderful service and amazing food! I will be thinking about the potato soup until I can go back to get more.

Dinner at Rue de Jean was nothing short of indulgent--crisp Sauvignon Blanc, truffle potato soup, grilled lamb porterhouse with sweet potato mash and Brussels sprouts, and a warm crumble aux pomme to finish. A meal worth savoring, from start to finish. Our server was amazing! Very attentive and personable. He really made our experience enjoyable.

Classic French food delivered flawlessly. The mariniere that came with my mussels was so rich and tasty I wanted to take it home. My wife's french onion soup was everything it should be, if a bit heavy on the cheese in her opinion (I disagree, there is NO SUCH THING as too much cheese.) Her escargot was in a luscious garlicky sauce that, again, we were fighting each other for the opportunity to sop it up with the bread service. The warm cheese fondue was amazing and is highly recommended. Service was attentive and enthusiastic. Our dining partners asked whether they bar had blue cheese stuffed olives, as they love them in their dirty martinis. The server said no, but she would stuff them herself. Unheard of! I also was a bit of a challenge, as I asked if the bar had the makings of a sazarac (I was on vacation, after all!) but I made it very clear that it was okay if not and gave her an alternative drink order if the bar didn't have the needed ingredients. While what I received was not EXACTLY a sazarac, the fact that they tried -- and came close -- was very much appreciated. Overall, there were few things that were not just spot-on excellent. 39 Rue de Jean is on our agenda for our next visit to Charleston.

My favorite French restaurant in the USA. I don't make that statement lightly. Just landed at the airport and came straight here for an early dinner. The rabbit is my personal favorite. I really enjoyed the truffle potato soup....the truffle and crème fraiche flavors really come through. Thanks team! P.S. Also a great place for a fancy cocktail if you're downtown.

    Artisinal Smash and Manhattan
    Laura S.

Started dinner off with two great cocktails: artisanal smash and a Manhattan. They bring out a fresh hot loaf of French bread with butter that was so delicious. My husband had the onion soup which he absolutely loved and I got the small goat cheese salad. I love that their apps come in small and bigger portion options. My small salad had one small goat cheese croquette but it was the perfect size to satisfy me yet leave room for my spinach and garlic ravioli. Ravioli had Cream sauce but not too heavy. My husband had the crispy pork belly app for dinner and was totally in love with it. We sat at a small 2 person table but there were a few groups there. Good size bar and on the way to the bathroom I saw another bar in a smaller room. Maybe for private parties or when they're busy/ spillover

    Coq au Vin
    Justin J.

Had a really fantastic meal here, but a few things just weren't perfect. The cheese plate was good but didn't come with nearly enough bread to try all the cheeses properly. I had the coq au vin which was really good but not quite as rich as I have had in the past. I ordered asparagus which never arrived (I forgot to check to see if I was charged for them). The tables were very close together and the room was extremely loud, hard to talk in there, and the ceiling was stained up badly like there was a flood years ago and they never repainted. Service was good, I was served by Nick. Desert was really amazing! Overall I would return here again and I thought the price was good for the area too. J.Ja

Rue de Jean, it has been a while since our last time coming for Sunday Brunch!! Rue opens at 11am on Sunday! Manager and Host welcomed us at the door and they were very welcoming and pleasant. The atmosphere is always upbeat and great music playing in the background. Cool Bar area as well bartenders! We started with our Soups, French Onion and the Potato Soup. I thoroughly enjoyed my Potato Soup, excellent flavors!! Of course everyone else had the French Onion Soup and loved it!! Our main courses came out promptly and we had Crab Eggs Benedict with Pomme Frites, Short Rib Reutine with Pomme Frites, and two of us had 10 oz Burger with Truffle Pomme Frites! Wow amazing everyone enjoyed their brunch!! Easy 5 Stars for Rue de Jean!!

A variety of delicious menu items!! All yummy!

What went well?? EVERY SINGLE THING!! I've been here before, but my husband had not. He had family in town, and one member is in a wheelchair. I called ahead to see if they could handle us. They were so polite and made fabulous accommodations for her! We enjoyed delicious cocktails 1st (Not Spritzin Around was my favorite, like an Aperol Spritz on steroids) and I enjoyed 2 with brunch! We all enjoyed our dishes. They were all perfectly cooked and delicious! It was my 1st Croque Madame and it did not disappoint! My egg was perfectly runny!! The rest of the table raved about their food as well!! We loved the atmosphere, sort of French and Charleston mixed together in one cohesive spot! We plan to return many times!!! Kudos to Rue de Jean!

We dined at night, when the patio glowed with lights, heaters, and long tables that felt instantly charming and warm. Inside, I loved the window at the end of the house looking straight into the kitchen. It felt like a front row seat at *The Bear*. The handwritten menu was a beautiful, elevated touch. The food was excellent. The burrata was the best I've had in ages, perfectly balanced with fresh, elegant flavors. The peppers with anchovies delivered a bolder, more dissonant note, but it worked beautifully. The bread was wonderful, the pork schnitzel hearty and satisfying, and my favorite dish was the snapper. Perfectly prepared, it came with a creamy but light sauce over a bed of onions. My only critique was the non alcoholic wine. The options tasted more like juice, and alcohol free wine can absolutely be refined and complex. These were not. Service? Yes. Yes. Yes. Warm, attentive, and genuinely gracious. I felt like a special visitor. Thank you.

The space alone is worth a visit -- soaring high ceilings, stunning architectural details, and a beautifully designed bar that immediately sets the tone. It feels grand without being stuffy. We were seated right away in a large semi-circle booth that was both cozy and spacious for our party of four -- the perfect balance of intimate and comfortable. Maddie, our server, greeted us promptly and took our drink orders. We started with a dirty martini, a crisp glass of Sancerre, and two Autumn Old Fashioneds -- all expertly prepared. From there, we asked Maddie for recommendations, and she absolutely nailed every single one. Her guidance truly shaped our evening. To start, we ordered the Pomme Frites and the Sweet & Beet Salad. The frites were a plate of crunchy, golden deliciousness -- yes, a touch salty, but in that can't-stop-eating-them kind of way. The Sweet & Beet Salad might sound like an unexpected pairing with sweet potatoes and beets, but somehow it worked beautifully. The flavors were balanced, thoughtful, and surprisingly harmonious. For mains, the Chicken Fricassée was well executed and comforting. The Boeuf Bourguignon, however, was the undeniable star of the night -- rich, deeply flavorful, and beautifully prepared. It's the kind of dish you think about the next day. The Gnocchi Parisienne was light yet decadent (if that even makes sense), pillowy and indulgent without feeling heavy. We also ordered the Market Catch -- a type of snapper none of us had ever tried before -- and it was cooked perfectly, flaky and packed with flavor. By the end of the meal, we were happily full and couldn't even consider dessert. Maddie suggested we at least pop downstairs to check out the speakeasy bar, even if we didn't grab another drink -- and we're so glad she did. I have to give Maddie the recognition she deserves. She was fantastic -- knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely fun. She made an already wonderful dinner even more enjoyable. An absolute delight. Ask for her if you can. I have been living in Charleston since 2010 and have been looking for a French restaurant for years. One day while walking around the French Quarter I noticed a quaint lil French bistro and put it on my "gotta try" list. So I came to see what all the 5 star reviews were about and boy was I disappointed from the get go. I try my best not to judge a book by its cover and lemme tell you I'm not scared of whole in the walls and the gems in different hodgepodge places, if it's got good eats, I'm there. I usually will try a restaurant 3 times before writing a review but helllllll no. The food and experience was so bad y'all! I have to tell you about my experience NOW while the bad taste is still in my mouth! I ordered the soup of the day which was she crab soup and a baguette. I thought cool French baguette is my fave and how could you go wrong with soup. No, I got 2 small slices of stale baguette top with some kind of cheese like a lunchable you can get at the grocery store and soup that was too salty to eat! So I said let me try something that you can't mess up. A croissant! A chocolate one well they messed that up too! How can you get a croissant wrong, and it was store bought croissants! Yuck! From a FRENCH restaurant, not made in house but if I'm wrong then those were the worst croissants ever!!!!!! Please people don't eat here! The serve staff did not greet us, ignored us and asked a white patron about his party of guests even though we were there 10 minutes before and the host knew he did wrong for asking to seat the other guy before acknowledging us because he caught my stare and we locked eyes and I did not back down or break the eye contact to let him know, yea fellow you totally ignored me for 10 minutes and asked the other guy how many in his party 1st! Even after the poor service I was dealt with in the beginning I still wanted to give it a chance, but after hearing how the wait staff addressed other patrons about how short staff they were and how horrible they had to do so many things I about had it. I was looking forward to a hot fresh French press coffee and was let down again. Weakest French press coffee just take my advice and walk swiftly past this whole in the wall. I can't believe this place is still open after so many years. Really Charlestonians!?! Really? I know we have more restaurants per square capita but this one has got to go. We ate some food because we were shopping and so hungry, but after that we paid and left fast

The fig syrup was the star providing a nice sweet and earthy flavor. My wife enjoyed the Harvest in Provence with charred corn mezcal, see the elephant amaro, bonal, lime, simple syrup, and a spiced corn garnish. This drink is so smokey but very refreshing. We were brought a complimentary hors derv which was a house made potato chip with tuna and spices. Really great for getting your palette ready for the coming meal. They only do this from 5pm to 6pm. We have had our eyes on the Raclette Burger Slider for some time. The burger was a good-sized slider, about the same size as a single cheeseburger with tons of ooey gooey raclette cheese smothering it. Of course, we had to order the Pommes Frites to go with the sliders and they arrived super crispy with a nice rosemary-lemon aioli for dipping. The grand finale was the Boeuf En Croute which was their play on a beef wellington. The filet was a nice medium rare with a flaky pastry crust and a delicious sauce bordelaise. A great way to finished. With its beautiful decor, great service and good food I would highly recommend this place for any date night!

The restaurant offers very limited onsite parking and since we were dining early we were able to nap one. When you walk in there is bar seating to the left, some very comfortable looking oval shape booths that look to seat about 4, and regular tables toward the black. The ceilings are high with a warehouse feel and painted black which seems to be the trend these days. Service was excellent, with just the right amount of attention. I started with Onion Soup Croquet. Think of a deconstructed French Onion soup that is about as unique of a dish as you can find. The dish starts with a medium size crispy Croquet stuffed with onion, and an onion soup broth and topped with lightly melted cheese. This is the a must dish. The wife ordered Octopus Bourguignon, which was Octopus, cavatelli, with a sofrito, bordelaise sauce. While I was not a fan as to how the Octopus and cavatelli played together, the sauce was deep, rich and frankly stunning. The wife and I split an order of Burgundy Escargot, with ramp butter, and baguettes. I like my Escargot the old fashion way smothered in just garlic butter, but this ramp butter was amazing. The wife's main dish was Diver Scallop Cassoulet. Although this was the least of our favorite dish, another unique broth still made this a very solid option. My main dish was the Monkfish Chop. This dish had a nice size piece of fish with a sizeable bone in the center (hence the term Chop). The dish included Almondine, capers, and brown butter jus that again was a fantastic paring to the meat. It also came with a side of Carolina gold rice which was a great way to soak up the brown butter Jus. Frankly, and as you might have deduced from this write up, all the dishes have a unique and amazing broth that needs to be served rice or bread or something else to help soak up and enjoy all of the rich goodness

I made a reservation at the chef's counter -- as a solo diner I'm especially fond of dinner and a show. It is worth noting that only a few of the counter seats actually have a good view of the kitchen, so make sure you add that request if it matters to you. The standard tasting menu is super reasonably priced for a Michelin and I decided to treat myself to both of the substitution upgrades and the wine pairing. Stand out flavors were the duck prosciutto to start (though the scale could have been smaller as the deliciously crumbly tart crust made it difficult to eat this without it falling apart), the seared scallop with billi bi, and the Kagoshima A5 wagyu (which was generously portioned!) I also found the wine pairing unpredictable and spot on! My favorite was the Greek Rose paired with the scallop! I was there on a Wednesday night and all diners were dressed in business casual or southern chic. Bathrooms are spacious and immaculate with wine counters and fragrant soaps. I'm not sure I'd always give this 5 stars -- if I had just had a view of the liquor bottles at the bar would I have enjoyed my experience as much? The interior of the space is beautiful with a lantern lit walkway and soaring ceilings with artful projections on the wall. I'm sure it's lovely for a special date night or celebratory dinner. It's an intimate space, but the tables are thoughtfully spaced so you never feel crowded. Perfect for a celebration. Caleb greeted us right away and led us to our high-top table. From the start, he set the tone for the evening -- explaining how the tasting menu works, what decisions we'd need to make, and what to expect as the night progressed. He was sharp, knowledgeable, and effortlessly personable. Truly, every restaurant should have a Caleb. (And every guest should be lucky enough to have one!) Wild Common is absolutely a special-occasion restaurant. The pomp and circumstance of the service -- the pacing, the presentation, the storytelling -- elevates the entire experience beyond just "dinner." Now let's talk about the food. Holy. Cow. It's a Chef's Tasting menu, so the only decision we had to make was between the Australian Wagyu and the NY Strip -- obviously we had to try one of each. Both were outrageous in the best possible way. Perfectly cooked, deeply flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth bites that you think about long after you leave. There were five courses plus beautifully executed "snacks" to start, and we opted for the wine pairing with each course (highly recommend). Every pour complemented the dish in a way that made each bite even more exciting. The menu changes weekly, which somehow makes it feel even more special -- like you're part of a moment that won't be repeated exactly the same way again. I almost feel like words are inadequate when it comes to Orlando Pagán's food. The balance of flavor and texture is genius-level. Creative without being pretentious. Refined without losing warmth. He is clearly doing exactly what he was born to do. We were lucky enough to meet Chef Pagán when he personally served one of our courses. Not only wildly talented, but also humble, kind, and incredibly personable. That interaction alone made the night even more memorable. I could go course by course and try to describe every detail, but honestly, I'd never do it justice. Look at the menu. Look at the pictures. Just know that it was all far better than I could ever properly express. If Wild Common isn't on your list, it should be. This wasn't just a five-star dinner -- it was a ten-star birthday celebration.
