Classic small town cafe done RIGHT. Friendly, fast service, old Waylon & Willie, George Strait and…read moreMerle Haggard videos on the tv, and chicken fry that put Mary's in Strawn to shame. (Yes, I've also had the highly praised CFS at Jean's in Cross Plains.) This CFS was just knocked-it-outta-the-park amazing; the crust was great & crunchy & crispy but the meat was the attention-getter. It was so tender but not flimsy or mushy, and incredibly well-seasoned. Did you see my eggs? Go look and just try to tell me those aren't the most beautiful over-medium you've ever seen. I'll wait while you drool over those perfect hash browns, too. (Better-half's scrambled even looked awesome.) I've had almost every "best" CFS in the state, and this is awfully damn close to the best I've ever had. I didn't even miss a mimosa option, come to think of it. If you find yourself close and don't get your CFS fix here, don't blame me, I tried! (Oh, their salsa was pure fire and I couldawouldashoulda tackled another diner for her migas when it wafted on a cloud straight from el paraiso to her table.)

There was no good reason except the staff just did not want to take care of more customers. Very disappointed! Oh well, Thank God for Dairy Queen.

DELICIOUS! I actually heard about this place from a Reddit post about places to stop on a road trip…read moreacross Texas and I'm so glad I listened! It's home cooked food, calories-not-monitored, but worth every single bite. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but I knew it was going to be good when we saw the parking lot was overflowing into the grass. Luckily there was still an open table inside and we were welcomed by the sweetest staff and our waitress was just as wonderful. So many things looked good on the menu, but I couldn't resist ending this road trip with another taste of chicken fried steak to compare to Mary's (and they can definitely compete because it was AWESOME)! We also tried the chicken fried chicken (delicious), sweet potato casserole (amazing), Mae's potato casserole (tasty), cheese sticks (good), and the hamburger and fries which was obviously delicious enough that my picky daughter almost finished it - which says a LOT! We were very glad that we'd ordered the "smaller portions" for lunch because it meant we could grab a few of the desserts to go to snack on for our final leg of the road trip and keep enjoying at home. We tried the toffee cake (incredible), peanut butter cake (sinfully good), and the coconut pie (very light and creamy)! We also snagged some items to take home with us from their coolers and I can 100% recommend their pork tamales and summer sausage. If you get the chance to stop here, you won't regret it at all! Delicious, great service, and good portions!
