This place a cute little place. It's obvious lots of locals like it. Very clean for a little hole-in-the-wall. Service was alright but, as others said, locals get the good service. I also had two toddlers with me and we've been driving for days, so our waitress had a good amount of patience and was still kind. The food was okay. This is what earns this place a solid 3. It won't make you sick but you won't be craving it either. I didn't touch my salad. Looks like it was pulled out of a bag and some of it was wilty. We probably wouldn't stop again but I don't regret it either. read more

The food is good comfort food. Their service is prompt and friendly. The building could use some attention, and they used to have fresh pies on display. Every other Thursday night they have a live band of local entertainment playing music from the 50's and early 60's. Great talent! Their fish is the best in the area. read more

Really kinda mid id rather just make my own food at home. Grilled chicken was too tough and the enchiladas were too small and too greasy a without anything to complement about them. Small town place with a small town feel. I felt out of place and the food was meh compared to anywhere else in the world. It might be great for this town, but I could also see this being a place that locals are proud of. The server was nice, can't complain. read more

It is a very nice place in a very small town, with very friendly wait staff. It was very crowded at 2:05 PM on a Thursday which is an indicator that the food is good. As crowded as it was it seemed to be quiet. I enjoyed the food and the environment, but I do enjoy small towns. It is in the middle of cattle country, and everyone seemed to be very nice. I would have given it 5 stars, but I wouldn't want to mislead the non-Texans among us. read more

I've eaten here with and without family. Jean's is consistent with their food which is good and with their waitstaff which is not good. I'm glad that they've kept their menus since covid and haven't done like everyone else and switched it up. Customer Service: One thing I've noticed about many small town restaurants is that most of the waitstaff tends to visit a lot with the local customers while on the job. Here, it's not so much of the visiting but that locals get better service than out-of-towners. I end up having to holler to get my drink refilled, get more napkins, get the ticket, etc. - 1 star Food: Their enchiladas are awesome! Both the beef & cheese. Also their quesadilla. DONT BOTHER STOPPING!!! I wouldn't give this place any stars if that was an option. The service was non-existent. If your not from Cross Plains keep on moving. Or at least go down the street to the Mexican restaurant. They're super quick and kind. read more

Always great service! The burgers are marvelous. The breakfast biscuit and gravy is something awesome.You had better be hungry! Tonight I had the rib-eye, and ask for medium. I should had asked for medium rare. While it had plenty of flavor, it was a little dry. I don't cook a steak that well for medium. My family loved their meals. I still recommend Jean's. It is well worth a trip from Brownwood. read more

I ate there twice for REH days. The service was good and attentive, even with a large group of customers. My coffee was always filled. The portions are large for a "I have work to do" type. The waitress was willing to let me do some shifting to my breakfast selection. My only problem was the sausage was a little over done. read more

Pulling up we were worried it would be another small town, smokey, greasy spoon. Walked in to the smell of good food, and happy personable waitresses. Service was fast and interactions were comfortably pleasant. The fried pickles for an appetizer were the best I have had. This is NOT a place that just uses the cheapest food truck ingredients. Real cheese on the kids quesadilla means our 5y/o ate all of it with a smile. Real beans, fresh romaine, and even something I haven't seen in a while: carrot pineapple salad! My wife and I had the chicken fried steak, which I strangely like with an enchilada on top. Mmmmmm. All of us are happily fed and will gladly make the 30 minute drive to eat here again. Big fan of the feed barn, very friendly staff and good food. If you go on tuesday, the special is steak finger basket and it's pretty delicious. The only problem with Jean's is they never have any veggies. They have salad but that doesn't really count. The funny thing is they are right next to the grocery store, how hard is it to go and get some veggies and cook them. But other than that its defanitly the best restaurant in town. After having given up chicken fried steak years ago, I had a good feeling about Jean's and took a chance. Wow. This is like the true, hand breaded, home-fried steaks grandma used to make--not too much breading, not too huge, served with good cream gravy on the side. Hubby had the steak fingers, also hand breaded, but with more coating. Both were good but chicken fry won first place. This might be my one guilty- pleasure fried steak place on earth. Coconut pie was decent, too. Friendly service in a small-town café deep in the heart of West Texas. read more

Don't be fooled by the name or appearance on the outside, this is a great local spot to grab breakfast. I stopped in on my way through cross plains and I'm glad I did. The staff is friendly and attentive. The coffee is hot and fresh. But the standout is the food- one of the best pancakes I've had anywhere, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Today (Sunday) I met up with the HOG riders from Abilene and we rode over to Cross Plains, a town I've not been to. We ate at Jean's Feed Barn. I tell you what people this place is TOPS! I went with breakfast while some of the others had the lunch specials . You have got to go there if your passing trough Texas and if you live in Abilene it's only 45 min away at the most. We were here for Robert E Howard Days and had lunch twice. They have friendly staff and good food. Large portions! I had the hot and spicy grilled catfish and the cheese enchiladas. Be forewarned- the cheese enchiladas come with meat sauce instead of enchilada sauce, so not good for vegetarians. Ate too much to try the pie. read more

Stopped by this spot on a road trip. Super friendly hometown cafe with very good service. Everything that came out of the kitchen looked fresh and delicious. We opted for the cheese burger, and we were not disappointed. Soft buns, fresh veggies, and cooked just right. The French fries are real potatoes and perfectly cooked. Then entire place was spotless. Their best bets are as follows and in this order: Sunday lunch ( roast beef is amazing), breakfast, Friday night catfish, and finally a hamburger at lunch. So, while traveling for work I happened through Cross Plains TX. Never heard of it and never been there so was thinking something chain... I was starving and saw a Dairy Queen and stopped... The employee behind counter did not know how to run a credit card then the manager yelled out to cancel my order cause my card was no good.... I assured the crowd my card was very good cause she somewhat embarrassed me. A little old man suggested a small cafe down the road. I was a little nervous when I pulled into Jeans but was so glad to be there. The food was very good, the service great and friendly staff. If you're ever in this town I recommend checking it out. read more

We were just passing through Cross Plains for a stop at the Robert E. Howard House and decided to grab a bite to eat. Being indecisive, my husband and I ordered a few things and shared it all. The breakfast taco and Spanish breakfast taco were both delicious, but the reason for 4 stars rather than 5 is because of the gravy on the biscuits and gravy. I don't know if it is a regional thing, but up in Michigan where we're from, the gravy is thick and peppery, and has bits and chunks of ground sausage mixed in...but here it was kind of bland and runny. I added extra pepper but it didn't help. However, if I ever find myself back in Cross Plains, I would definitely eat here again--I would just get more breakfast tacos! :) read more

Came thru here and stopped in for lunch just over a year ago on a cross country trip. Waitress was friendly and recommended the chicken fried steak and fries which were not bad. Seemed like all locals. It's somewhat "rustic", basic and sparse in a country way, not bad. Food was decent, good portions and definitely better than the usual chain restaurant garbage you find in the big cities. If I were passing thru Cross Plains I would stop there again. Coming back from a morning of fishing and thought we'd stop and get the chicken fried steak that was getting such great reviews. The waitress was super friendly but service was slow. We ordered onion rings for an appetizer and when they finally came they were room temperature at best. The meals came a while after that. I love a good chicken fry but this was not it. The gravy was good and the baked potato was ok. The salad was just sad and the chicken fry left a lot to be desired. Probably won't stop here again. The best part was the friendliness of our waitress. read more

We travel through Cross Plains frequently and have stopped at Jean's several times. The food is always unusually good, but it has been very slow service every time. Today we were almost finished with our meal before we got the requested salad dressing and steak sauce after going up to the counter a second time to ask for it. Food was horrible. It looked like something from a cafeteria not a place advertising home cooked food. Also the tea was soured. The only reason I'd eat here was if I was looking for a stomach ache. Definitely should have kept driving, because it was not worth it. read more

My sister & I shown up around 4:05pm on Saturday, March 21st. There were two booths open. One still had stuff on it so we sat at what looked like the clean table. It apparently had not been wiped clean. There was water and some sort of sticky stuff on it. We told the young man about the sticky stuff and asked for a towel to clean the table. The young man brought us a dry towel. We ended up using hand sanitizer to clean the table. After about 15 minutes of waiting, my sister brings attention to the waitress that we would like to get drinks. The waitress, Carson, informed us that they're closed from 3:30pm to 4:30pm due to waitress/cook shift change, but since it was just two of us and it's nearly 4:30, she will go ahead and serve us. We feel that if the restaurant is closed for any reason, no matter the length of time, there should be a sign & the door should be locked. We ordered a large chicken fried steak and fried pickles. I said that we want the pickles first. The CFS came and I reminded her that we wanted the pickles first. She then said that she put in the order and need to check, they should be done. No, we heard them being dropped in the fryer. Then, when receiving our pickles, she said that the boy was cutting pickles when we came in and so they weren't read.... I say bolony. I don't believe either thing she said. The water was gross, unsure if the glasses were dirty but I had stuff floating in mine. It actually tasted like it had another soda in it. My sister's was awful too. She went next door and bought 2 bottles of water. I told Carson about the water. She didn't offer anything else to drink or take our glasses away. After being served, Carson never came back to the table. I'm only give a second star because of the food. Staff would get a 0 stars if I could. Update: Since this review, they've updated their hours on Google.

Both were served in cool glasses, with mine being tall and skinny and hers being almost like a wine glass. Shocking to nobody, mine was quite fruity while her Rosé IPA was hoppy with an underlying rosé flavor. Next, I ordered their Oktoberfest (German Märzen) and she had their Season's End (Belgian Dubbel). She described her drink as tasting like a Biscoff cookie. My Oktoberfest was quite malty, and I was a big fan. To close, we both ordered their Luscent (Belgian Table Beer) because small beers are back in fashion and I wanted to try it. It was obviously very light but still had a good flavor that was very bready. Nice and easy to close out our drinks with. They also have food and coffee that we didn't try, but the food looked sensational from what we saw others eating. They also have plenty of board games and card games to play while you're at the brewery and many beers available to take to-go. My only minor complaint is the lack of TVs in the brewery. Maybe it's a purposeful decision, but Texas Tech was playing football, and it would be a great place to watch the game. The bartenders are very friendly and willing to let you try and sample as many beers as you need to make your decision. Grain Theory feels like the kind of place every small Texas city wishes it had. The steak was delicious as was the baked potato. I cleaned my plate. The TV screen was across the room and the closed captioning was in a large font and easy to read from the other side of the room. So many times I've seen ESPN talking heads on a screen with no captioning and too small of a font making it hard to read. But this place was very accommodating.
