When I heard about Books-A-Million shutting down I was heart-broken. But when the Buzz On Biz radio show broke the news that a new Used Music, Video, Gaming and Bookstore was opening in its place I quickly changed my tune. 2nd & Charles is a great concept and an exciting shopping experience. I brought in 2 tubs worth of old dvds, books and graphic novels and got a fair value in store credit to shop with. The have a massive selection of books, audio books and graphic novels. I was able to pick up a couple of graphic novels that would only be available online at a great discount. The helpful staff walked me through the trading process and explained how their store works. I was very impressed with the entire operation. I wish I could have gotten a little more for my money, BUT I was not reading or watching what I traded-in, SO it was a good deal. My only complaint is that they DO NOT trade or sell Blu-Ray discs, YET. read more

Cozy place with a laid back atmosphere and the friendliest staff. I went in there to buy Christmas presents for my family and they had everything from records, to musical instruments and thousands of books. It's a great stop to if you're looking for vinyl records and record players in Augusta! The awesome person working the cash register even offered to help me carry my dozen books and vinyls to my car. What a fun store. My guy brought me here when I was visiting Augusta. More than just books. 2nd and Charles offers games, movies, music, and collectibles galore. It's a media lover's and geek's heaven! I purchased some POP figurines, Terminator 2, and some Doctor Who movies. Also, picked up some Sherlock collectibles. This store is not honest. In January 2020 I purchased a book from 2nd and Charles on Washington Road. At the time I was asked if I would like four free magazines. I was given a pamphlet of magazines to choose from. I was told I would not be charged for these magazines and nothing was said about a subscription. In March, I received a charge on my credit card for Better Homes and Gardens. I went to the magazine website to cancel the subscription, not knowing how it had started, and was given a message that the magazine has an agreement with their affiliates to not cancel subscriptions, but that customers must go through the affiliate. Remembering, thankfully, about the magazines at 2nd and Charles, I called the store and said that I never signed up for a subscription, was told the magazines were free, and would like the subscription ended and a refund. I was told by the sales representative on the phone that he could give me the phone number and website of the company that I needed to call, as the bookstore could not cancel or refund the subscription. I called the number he gave me, talked to a representative not from Better Homes and Gardens, but a random group, and gave him the same information. He said that he would refund me and cancel the subscription. That was over a month ago and I still have not been refunded, and I'm still receiving magazines. This means that 2nd and Charles, without my consent, gave my credit card information to a third-party. Furthermore, the fact that the sales representative on the phone had immediate access to the phone number and website that I needed to cancel the subscription means that I am not the first person to call in with this complaint. I am deeply upset and disturbed by the dishonest, wrongful, and shady management of 2nd and Charles. I will not be purchasing anything further from the store. read more

I truly love this store. The staff is friendly and passionate about their stock and trade. I have found several rare books at this location. Inexpensive. Huge. Very much like a Lowes in the look, but organized and awesome. Old books smell like old books, a smell that I am quite fond of. It is not Barnes and Nobles, which is fine. This store is really organized and I did not realize how big it was until I went it. Just for the sake of browsing everything they have, you'll find yourself spending at least 45 minutes to an hour there. You don't have to buy anything, but it's just so interesting to see all the stuff that has been amassed there. There really is something for everyone. From the clothing, to snacks, to books, and games, there's some entertainment for everyone. The prices are good also, for what the store is. read more

Love the buy 3 used books and get the 4th book free of equal of lesser value. Husband was happy to get comics and good books. I'm not much of a reader BUT I came across a series a books that I grew up reading so I started to created my own collection to have on hand. I started my niece on the series last year so I was able to get her a couple more books for her collection as well. These books are in very good condition for 1.14 each. Not too bad. read more

I visited this store recently with my niece. She's three and wanted to get some books. So, I thought let's try 2nd & Charles. We'd just eaten lunch up the street, so we were close by. I like how organized the store is. They have a section for kids, which I was expecting, but I was grateful for. My niece was excited and didn't know what to grab first. Now in true retailer form, the kids area had more toys than books. Toys for sale that is. It wasn't easy trying to keep the attention of my niece with a book, so I let her roam around an play with toys until she landed on something she felt she couldn't live without. This is a great place to get books. I've purchased a few here. The pricing isn't necessarily discounted. The pricing seems comparable to a Barnes & Noble. They seem to shine in the video game, electronic department. They also let you trade-in books, so that could be where they see the most action. Outside there are discounted books. I'm not sure if they are updated titles or what the racks consist of. They don't have any seating areas, I'm guessing they don't really want a lot of loitering. There's plenty of parking because it is located in a plaza. They don't have staff roaming around, so if you need anything you'll have to go find someone. That's not a bad thing in my opinion. Overall, cool place. My niece left with something called Shopkins and she was very happy. read more

Book selection is fine. Buyback program leaves MUCH to be desired. Wouldn't take several current books in used but good condition, ending up getting half of what I brought back. Then you have to come back to claim your store credit. It didn't used to be that way. Should've just donated them to the library. read more

I was very impressed at the number and overall quality of books. There are also games and movies as well. Just remember that it is a USED bookstore, so there may be a slight musty smell. Other than that, it was very clean and the staff was very helpful. Highly recommended! read more

Awful trade in policy for books makes you have to stay in store while they tally your books. Took 40 minutes on an absolutely dead day in the store on July 4th. We wanted to drop the books off and get some lunch and come back and spend the credit but we were told we could not get the credit if we left the store. Crap policy in my view. I wont be back because I don't have 40 minutes to spend returning 20 books for next to nothing. Oh, and the place smalls like a nursing home. read more

The first time I went in after it first opened I did not like it. But I went back. The security guard is gone. The smell is more toward old books now. The shelves are almost full. The store credit is wonderful (the cash trade is almost non existant). I have been trading in a lot of books. The place is improving weekly. The staff are very friendly and helpful. read more

When it comes to buying things very good place to go. Pricing is fair to below market value and a lot to pick from. On the other side is their buying items from customers for resale. This program is deceit in the greatest form. They offer you little money for your items and mark them up 1000 to 5000 percent and resale them. This is not the way to treat your customers. I waited for two hours for them to give me an estimate, and then insulted me with a ridiculously low offer. Do not sale anything to these people. Just purchase the stuff you need. How could anyone criticize this place? It's amazing! The best used book store that I have ever seen. It's not a cold, sterile environment.... it's called minimalism and modern design. The Book Tavern, which up to this point was the only general used book store I knew of in the area, has a very limited selection and almost never had books I was interested in. 2nd and Charles, on the other hand, has nearly everything I could think of. And the most amazing thing is that it is well organized, categorized, and they actually keep inventory on their computers and can tell you if they have the book you want, where to find it in the store, and how much it is. Most used book stores do not do that. Sometimes the prices are a little high, but that's going to be the case anywhere. Just consider if buying it right then in used condition is going to be the best choice for you. I've bought a lot of publisher overruns at $4 and that's a great deal for what they are. My kids love coming here, and I love the coupons I get in my e-mail. They provide a great incentive to go to the store and have some fun. And last but not least, the staff is amazing. Always friendly and helpful and well informed. They don't have to turn to their computer to answer simple questions like the people at "the other store" do. 2nd and Charles is a welcome addition here in the Augusta area. read more

I can't believe how this store has grown from the first time I visited. The selection is outstanding, and the store is very well organized. I do miss the old coffee shop at Books-a-Million, but the new store more than makes up for it with books I could never have found in a new book store. Plus they have the best selection of vinyl that I've found anywhere. I did sell some books and a couple of CD's and got a decent cash value. And unlike most book stores I got to, the people who work there are extremely helpful and friendly. Always find something I want or need here for great prices. I am a fan of looking for children's books here for my granddaughter. Great selection and most prices are fair. Very disappointed! I was told by a management person during their changeover that there would be very little change and that they were just going to change the look. I visited the store on the day before Thanksgiving. Upon entering a man with Security printed on his shirt was leaning against the divider at the front of the store. The rest of my visit was even more disappointing. Nothing like the old B.A.M.! I will not be going back as it is not my kind of store. I totally agree about the smell. I could barely breath the first few times that I was browsing. But I have noticed that it is not as bad the past time I was there. Also true about lack of style and warmth, not like a Barnes and Noble. But the sales people were friendly and helpful. The main point is, I have taken a lot of used books, DVDs, and audio books to get store credit. They give a much larger amount for store credit rather than cash. I have been able to use store credit to trade for a lot of good books (they have a huge amount!) and DVDs. Check it out if you have a lot of books that you want to trade for others to read. read more

Thank God it's a bookstore and not a boutique, that way customers won't have to worry about whether it has (or, for that matter, needs) charm or personality or a pretty store front. But if customers are interested in finding some surprises--whether a limited edition of Old Man and the Sea, or a vinyl of Kool and the Gang, or a copy of the movie The Music of Chance (incredibly hard to find)--then 2nd and Chas. just might be the place you've been looking for. They even have merchandise worth protecting with security cameras and electronic tags, like other (pretty) stores have, since, remember, they sell NEW stuff, too. read more

I decided to try 2nd and Charles to see how it works and maybe get some Christmas money. Upon arrival I found the young girl polite, but not overly friendly. I took 20 Books on CD, several by John Grisham to see how much I could get for them. The young tech appraising my books on CD said it might take an hour. Upon asking if I should come back the young lady stated preference was given to those shopping. While thinking an hour was a long time to spend here, I said Ok and looked around. 45 minutes later, my offer was ready. $10.27 cash or $20 bucks store credit was offered for about $600 of originally priced books. When I questioned this, the tatooed young man told me, well if you'll notice, our books are sold really cheap, and that he couldn't tell me an itemized offer. I said, yes, the prices are low, but I just saw one John Grisham book on CD listed at $17.88. ( I was selling them 5 John Grishams!) I didn't expect much,for them but ouch!! Don't expect much for your items, or much in the way of customer service. If you just want to get rid of something, this works, otherwise, you'll get more money and service at a yard sale!!! read more
