I'm giving this place five stars for a number of reasons. First, I ate there tonight and had the best masala dosa I've eaten outside of India-- and I've spent over two years of my life there over a number of trips. A masala dosa, if you've never had one, is a thin crepe made of lentil and rice flour, and it's heartland is the south of India. A masala dosa is mostly crisp with some chewy sections in the middle, especially where a delicious potato filling is rolled up in the center. The one I ate was delicious: fresh, over a foot wide, and with a generous amount of nicely seasoned filling. It is served with traditional sides; the sambar (seasoned lentil based sauce/stew) was fabulous, the coconut chutney was decent, and the tomato chutney was okay (that one I'm not used to seeing, but that's likely a regional difference within the south). Second, although I didn't have room for more than a taste of it after the dosa, the dal tadka is also fabulous. This is a yellow lentil based dish with cumin seeds, a bit of tomato, and seasoning that includes chopped fresh cilantro as a topping. I've eaten yellow dal dishes all over India (dozens and dozens of places) and this holds its own as really well prepared, fresh, and flavorful. The rice was average good. I'm looking forward to having both for lunch tomorrow. Third, this is a place that anyone who truly likes Indian food should try. I've only had two dishes but I'll be back to try more when I move to Columbia in July. The chef is from Chennai (southern India), the owners are from Gujarat (northwestern India), and the servers I met were from Mumbai (Bombay) and Nepal. This makes it a truly pan-Indian (and beyond) experience. Indian restaurants as Americans experience them are usually based on North Indian dishes made for an American audience. Try something new here and experience Indian food as something more regional-- it's a huge country much like ours is, and if you like our southern cooking, well, give this a shot with an open mind. Fourth, I feel the reviews which unfavorably compare the food at 2 Gingers to a previous restaurant to be unfair. Sure, losing a favorite place or dish is a bummer, but don't blame the next business for that loss. Take 2 Gingers on its own terms without expecting it to be what came before. Finally, and I say this as someone who is bummed to be leaving a city with a really robust ethnic restaurant scene, Columbia needs good restaurants in general and can only benefit from diverse cuisines being represented. I had a great experience here, with delicious food and excellent service. I highly recommend 2 Gingers and hope it is around for a long time to come. read more

Ok, so far pretty good. The dishes are spicy yet nuanced -- not bland or "off". The one misstep was ordering the chili naan a 2nd time. First time it had fresh chilies and was devine; 2nd time, they brought us naan made with red pepper flakes. When we questioned it, we were told that's how it's supposed to be, then that they were out of the right peppers. We ate our dinners without naan that night, and were considered mighty strange. So, just the one proviso: ask about the chili naan before you order. Otherwise their food is quite enjoyable. A nice thing to have in town. Always see friends there, too, which is a good sign, and so reminds me of our dearly departed Touch. read more

Food is fine but seems lots to learn for the attitude. I had ordered Rava dosa today but a simple dosa instead of Rava dosa was served to me when complained about that , kitchen and serving staff started arguing with us and trying to prove that that is Rava dosa as if we were having rava dosa first time. When I tried to show them how Rava dosa looks like they started arguing and rude towards us . Will never ever going there again if Yelp have option for negative rating I would like to give that . The food at 2Gingers reminds of that small little ma and pa restaurant (usually referred to as a dhaba) in a small Indian town. Dhabas serve just the most delightful food with the right amount of flavor. They're friendly and everyone smiles, making you feel right at home. If you're ever in a small Indian town, make sure you visit one. Or.. ...you could simply go to 2Gingers. Everything I've eaten here has been exceptional. My boyfriend and I have been to 2 Gingers twice now. Both times have been spectacular. The owner is usually around and attentive to customers. He gave us some great recommendations for navigating their large menu. The food was fantastic, fast, and it's all made fresh (spice level can be catered to your needs). This place used to be Bombay Grill. I went here 2/17 and ordered Chicken Tikka Masala which by the time I got home, it was very sweet not savory at all and I ordered it level 6 which is the hottest they offer and it was not spicy at all. Bombay Grill had a really good CTM but the new ownership/managment whatever must have changed the recipes. Will not be returning. read more

We came for a late lunch on a Saturday around 1:30pm. We wanted to order off the menu but were told we could only eat off the buffet. Looking around, we could see where people were coming in to pick up food ordered off the menu and even other tables where others had ordered off the menu and not the buffet. Surveying the buffet, it was obviously not kept fresh and pans appeared to have nothing but leftovers from the past 3 hours. We were given a pitcher of tap water and never attended to further. For the unwillingness to serve us off the menu, the poor quality and maintenance of the buffet offerings, the inattentiveness and not to mention how overpriced the buffet was... we will never eat here again. Saffron and Persis in Greenville far outclass this poor example of an Indian restaurant in Columbia. read more

First time experience with Indian cuisine so when we walked in and saw the buffet we were lost and ended up asking for menus. After a little while one of the owners (I think) came over to assist with suggestions. He was very patient and helpful. He also came back after our food arrived to be sure it was to our liking. This level of service is hard to find. The food was delicious - very flavorful. I tried the shrimp curry and garlic naan. Heat was based on our specifications. One of the best in town, on par with Persis Biryani(new one in town). Their lunch buffet has a wide variety and some of the items are authentic, if not all. They also provide a mix of fruits and salad, along with a nice selection of Indian deserts. Looks like a Chinese restaurant from outside, but don't mistake for it. Made our first trip to 2 Gingers tonight, but it won't be our last. Our waitress Archana was very helpful and provided excellent advice about the extensive menu. The food was good and that is why I give the 3 stars. The service was poor. Wasn't really greeted when I walked in (1st clue) and after they brought the food, I never saw a waiter/waitress again. Not to check or even refill my drink. I got tired of waiting for them so I got up to pay the bill instead of waiting for them to bring the check. I was a little nervous going here because I have never eaten Indian from a menu, I have always eaten at a buffet for the variety. I was pleasantly surprised when we got to the restaurant we were greeted immediately by the staff. The menu was quite overwhelming for someone who does not order Indian food off a menu so the waitress was kind enough to explain what different things were which was very helpful. My husband really didn't know what he wanted so she thoroughly explained and questioned his tastes and preferences now granted this took quite a while but she was very patient with us. I told her what I like and what I have experienced of Indian food that I like ,she picked out something similar to what I've had before but she suggested a different version of it. I was apprehensive at first but I ordered it anyways I figured she knew what she was talking about so I might as well try it. They brought out a type of cracker really with seeds and three chutneys the Red Chutney was very spicy the brown Chutney was sweet and very good the green Chutney cilantro and it was really good overall I enjoyed all the Chutneys and the cracker type of appetizer was very good my daughter loved it she is 21 months old. We ordered the vegetarian sampler platter it was good the only complaint I had was the time in between the appetizer and the main entree it was very short. We then proceeded to our main meal my husband really enjoyed his lamb he was very surprised at how good it was he was apprehensive at first but he enjoyed every bite I love the recommendation from the waitress it was a tiki marsala with the cheese bites it was sweet and creamy not too spicy overall my taste buds were very very pleased I was actually upset and when I got so full that I couldn't eat anymore because it was so amazing the only complaint I have is the quality of some of the seating in the restaurant which does need to be fixed it is fixed with duct tape for the time being which is tacky but doesn't take away from the overall experience. I go to restaurants for the food not for the atmosphere, if I want good atmosphere I will go to museum. Overall I am very satisfied with the wait staff and food. We have visited this establishment on several occasions now and before the transformation from Bombay. .. OK I gave 2 gingers a 5 star prior to today. My husband and l were feeling Indian food therefore we headed over to 2 gingers this time we had takeout and it was horrible! I had the chicken masala and asked for heat level 5 but received like a 2/3 that along with my meal being absolutely greasy it was obvious that the sauce wasn't fresh because it was runny due to breaking. .. My aunt in law is from India and I know Indian food very well.... next the raita was watery and flavorless I did not get any flavor or indication it was even made with yogurt it tasted like water and carrots! The chicken in the masala appeared as if it were left overs from the tandoori chicken, my meal was a mess.... hubby's could have been much better his heat level was lacking as well but far more tasteful than mine. Come on 2 Gingers you are better than this review please serve the proper heat level when asked no need to Americanize the heat we appreciate good SPICY Indian food especially for us that has traveled the world! My girlfriend and I came to this restaurant (for the second time) to enjoy some Indian cuisine. The restaurant had a very nice ambiance, we were seated and our waiter ranjive was taking care of us. He was very polite and showed excellent service throughout the meal. I noticed the menu was different from the first time I had dined at this restaurant; it was expanded with more selections. I wasn't too sure what to order but i knew i wanted beef. I asked rangive if i should get the 2 ginger curry. He then proceeded to ask if i wanted a chicken dish or lamb. When I responded lamb he suggested the Lamb Rogan josh, stating it was the best lamb dish in the house. I ordered it immediately. I also ordered a garlic naan upon ranjive's suggestion. He was very helpful in the process of ordering food giving helpful insight on what beer I should order, the hunter beer for 7.99 which wasn't too light not too dark and filled two full glasses! The food was delicious and the garlic naan paired perfectly with my dish. I definitely suggest going to 2gingers if you want good Indian cuisine with staff who care about your experience. This was our first visit with a party of 11 on a Sunday night and they were able to seat us quite quickly. The owner was very engaging and nice. Our server Joseph was very attentive and accommodating to everyone in our group. There was no buffet but we loved the food we ordered! The dosas are huge and actually hung off the plate, they tasted great too. Other people were taking pictures of them. We ordered several dishes gobi Manchurian, navratan korma, chicken biryani, onion baji. All tasted very good and we liked that you could pick your spice level.
