Take care out there, y'all. For the first time in 28 years, I found myself alone at sea with a couple of tech issues that were increasingly problematic. Nerds in a Flash arrived late on a day that I was tightly scheduled and asked for considerably more than they had originally estimated (exactly the same job/problem I had described to them)... but redeemed themselves by cheerfully solving my problem and agreeing to the original estimate. Would I hire them again? You bet, but I recommend that you have them come in on a day that you have a flexible schedule, because your own time pressures are demonstrably unimportant to them.

In my case it was my son's flash drive, containing key work files, that he had inadvertently reconfigured for a gaming device, thus making it unreadable on a PC. Unlike the other services I had called Brent said that he would call back within 30 minutes with instructions, and that the final cost would be around $100 (final cost was $99). Over the next 2 hours Brent patiently walked me through his remote procedure, unfazed by the fact that he had to work around my PC configuration, and unperturbed when my labtop died because it ran out of charge. At the end all the files were recovered. And though some were unusable because they were overwritten the very fact that some they were recoverable greatly lifted my mood. No miracles were promised, instead I received an efficient, cost effective solution delivered in a jovial and totally professional manner. Thank you Brent for what I hope will be our only encounter. PS I should mention that all of this occurred on a Saturday evening, well outside of "normal " business hours.

John Cloud diagnosed a failed memory stick (oh no! they cost so much now!). I supplied an "extra" memory stick from one of the other computers at our church and John continued the repair diagnosing and fixing some particularly nasty software errors that had resulted from the initial hardware failure. All of our installed software now works reliably again! Great job! The machine was back in service on March 5 for a very reasonable repair cost! I could not use it because of continuous, invasive messages about viruses on my computer and the need to purchase antivirus software. I came to Frankenstein. The technician spent three minutes or so eliminating the blockage and arranging my settings to reduce chances that I will connect with similar bad actors in the future. And he didn't charge me at all for the service. Expertise and grace - what a combination!

He even had the required parts on hand that were an upgrade to what I currently had installed. I even learned a lot just from discussing the issues with him, and I consider myself relatively tech savvy. Oh, and the computer runs better than I remember it running in years. I was traveling in Austin for a seminar and discovered my phone wasn't charging. I rely on my phone for business use so this was critical. I dropped in to 1UP Repairs on Research to see if they could fix my problem. The manager spent literally a few seconds examining my phone and and told me he thought he could fix the problem quickly. He walked to the back and within my sight pulled out what he called his special tweezers and extracted a wad of lint from the charge port. He tested it and sure enough it immediately started charging. He explained this is common from carrying the phone in pocket or purse. I tried to pay him for the diagnostic but he said he never charges for these simple fixes. If I have a real issue you can be sure I will go back, and I highly recommend this shop. read more

I took my iphone to 1Up because it wouldn't turn on or charge as a result of getting some water inside. After checking it out, they told me there was a less than 5% chance that it would work again. Enter Star Electronics, I found them on google and they are literally half a mile from me. All the reviews about their service and prices are accurate! I was lucky enough to he helped by Ramazan, who told me he'd do his best to recover my Hard Drive for $80 (a brand new hard drive was only $40 more). My laptop is my life, and I was very nervous about a self inflicted fatal error. Thankfully Ramazan was able to recover my hard drive and got me my laptop back good as new in about 5 hours!! I've been having issues with my Samsung phone where the phone will be fully charged and less than 4 hours later, while only on standby, be totally dead. On Saturday, I took the phone to The Best Buy (I originally purchased the device at a Best Buy) in Round Rock, which is the only one of their stores in the Austin area that services the device. The "technician" tested my device and said the battery was fine and they couldn't replace it because it past their "thorough test". Not one to take things at face value, I went over to iTech in the Domain. The technician was knowledgeable and pleasant and agreed there was something up with the phone. He opened up the device (with me standing there) and to both of our surprise the battery was swollen to twice it's correct size and ready to explode. Remember all those people who couldn't get on airplanes last year because their Galaxy Note 7's were ticking time bombs?...yeah like that! New battery installed and I've had zero issues with it since. Apparently, Best Buy's rigorous test was to ask "is it a battery?" and if the answer is "yes" it passes. I will NEVER give Best Buy my business again. Not only did they fail to correctly diagnose the issue with my device but they let me walk out the door with a device that could have caused physical harm or fire damage. (and yes, I'll be leaving them a review also.) So, in short, bring your device to iTech in the domain with the confidence that it's in good hands. Best Buy....I hope Amazon puts you out of business.
