Fjord Explorer playing during the World Arts Film Festival Kickoff Party on 5-15-14
    Mandie M.

Somehow or another, I always seemed to miss heading to a show at 1904, even through various Art Walks and One Spark. Last night, 1904 hosted the World Arts Film Festival After Party and I finally got to see a show in this awesome space. 1904 is straight forward. Beer (or wine) and music. Simple as that. They have a handful of beer on tap, but a pretty large bottle and can selection. Not going to lie, I was disappointed to see Budweiser and inBev products in the mix, especially with all the trouble they are giving our locals brewers. However, the first recommendation from the bartender was a local brew, so there's that. I was feeling like a stout last night and was excited to find out that they had Green Room Brewing's Count Shak-u-la on tap. I have been searching for that for awhile and most of my usual hangouts haven't had it, or I had just missed it on the rotation. I walked in just as one of my fave local bands started their set. I've seen these guys play at Burro, Fly's Tie, and on outdoor stages, but I don't think I've heard them sound as good as they did last night. The sound guy was on point and the acoustics inside 1904 are absolutely beautiful. I don't know how I had never seen a show here before, but I'll definitely be making sure to come back.

This is a very dismal the dark bar music hall downtown Jacksonville. They have some interesting bands that play there but the place itself doesn't have anything unique about it. It's basically a room with a stage a bar and some stand up seats tables. The drinks seem to be mediocre and a little higher than should be. The bartenders were very slow to get the drinks and the order the customers came in.

Checked out this music venue last night and had a great time. Used to go to live music all the time when I lived in Boston & Providence- was pleasantly surprised to check out this place. Let's be clear- it's a 4 star on the grungy dive bar music venue scale. It's dark, crowded, smoky, and a bit sticky. (There technically isnt smoking inside but it still was smoky either from the stage effects or patio smokers). Bathroom is a dark closet. But as long as you know what you are walking into, this is a great spot to check out some live music. Decent security at the front door, full bar that accepts CC (nice!), great acoustics and lighting. There is an outdoor smoking patio and second stage & bar out back too. Parking can be a hassle with either metered or garages. Not sure how much shows usually are here, assuming it varies on the talent, but 20 bucks was well worth it for a night out with live music. I will def sign up for their emails and see what other acts play here.

Divey, gritty, smokey, raw, loud.... if you are headed to 1904 to check out a show, get ready to experience all of these things, in the most fantastic way. We arrived a little early for our show, so had no problems walking right up to the bar and grabbing a drink. They do have local brews on tap, so we grabbed a few and headed out back. The enclosed patio area in the back is just awesome. A few picnic tables and wooden boxes for seating, string lighting and incredible murals on the walls. The weather was mild, so we chilled out there for most of the night. They had a band and later a DJ to keep us entertained, and while yes, it's very loud.... the bass line will move you (LOL almost literally) but you can catch your breath and take a rest if you've been dancing your ass off inside. Inside, there is a decent sized space in front of the stage, and depending on the size of the crowd, you can get right up front for a great view of the band... but again, it's SUPER loud, so if that type of thing bothers you, stick towards the back or head to a different venue. And they sound will be a bit distorted, but hey, I knew I wasn't heading to Jacoby Hall or anything. Tip: Bring your ear plugs if you've got em! (Side note: Yes, I know, ear plugs. But after all my years and travels to see different shows, and snickering at people wearing ear plugs, well, now that I probably have some hearing loss due to said shows, I've re-thought this quite a bit.) What? So, there is a smoke machine, and you'll catch a few cool lighting settings to add to the experience. If you've never seen a show in a smaller venue like this, I would highly recommend it, just for the experience. You can reach out and touch (well, maybe don't do that) the musicians, you are guaranteed to have a few very interesting conversations with fellow show goers, but everything about it will be authentic, gritty and real. And tickets were only $15! I will absolutely be back, and I'm keeping an eye on the calendar.

1904 puts on a majority of the shows in the progressive jam/funk/hip hop/electronica scene. The sound is average in my opinion, but it has definitely improved from when they opened up a few years ago. If you need to catch a break from the action, they have a sick courtyard out back where someone is usually throwing down some beats. They've covered the walls with huge murals too which makes it a fun place to hang out. Every time I come here the place has some new art or an improvement somewhere. You can tell the owner puts a lot of effort into making this a cool spot. I always have a good time catching a show with friends here. 1904 is key to the downtown music scene as well as the city of Jacksonville for that matter (now that Freebird is closing). Keep doing what you're doing guys!

35 chairs set up for Burlesque Show in front of the stage.
    Danielle R.

This was my first visit here with some friends for the Burlesque show, I was told it was to be standing room only but was pleasantly surprised when I got there and they had 35 chairs set in front of the stage. Some of the girls who had already purchased tickets for the show had actually gave them away due to the typical SRO style. There were also about 3 high top tables and the bar but that was it for "regular" seating. The bar itself is old and divey but that just adds to it's character, I got a glass of Angry Orchard Cider on tap for $5.00, not bad. the show itself was very good, slightly corny but they really had some talent. Definitely not for a conservative mind of someone who is easily offended. My main complaint was conflicting start and end times. The ticket said 8pm -11pm, the website stated 9pm-11pm and Face book stated 8pm-11pm. We got there at 8:30 as middle ground. We had called and the venue confirmed 9pm. the show started at 9:30 and was still going strong past midnight when we decided to call it a night. I'm not sure how late it went on but they did not seem to be slowing down any time soon. Had it been on a weekend I would have stayed for the entire production but since it was a Thursday night we threw in the towel early.

This is a review of the burlesque show "Professor Whiskey on the Rocks"' There were four entertainers presenting their skills to the audience. Two of them were very good, the blondie singer, and the girl the plays with fire. This review will focus on the negative side because there is a lot to improve. - 1904 Music Hall needs to hire an additional bartender when presenting this show. One is not enough. I gave up waiting for my turn, but she never look at the side of the bar in which I was waiting. - Before the show started, the entertainers were mixed with the audience, chatting and showing their customs. This is unacceptable. There was not element of surprise for us who pay $12. - The show was supposed to be a burlesque one. According to Wikipedia, burlesque is a good way to perform female striptease in an elegant way. Unfortunately, the director of the show allowed a very overweight male comedian to take off his shirt and do a semi striptease. Not good in my opinion. It looked too low class for a burlesque show. - It appeared to be that half of the audience had smoked weed that night. The comedian, who was not very good, was joking constantly about weed, and the audience not only went crazy every time he said the word weed, but laughed loudly for jokes that in my opinion were not funny.

Fun bar to hang out. It's only beer and wine but they have a lot of live music. I always meet my friends here at art walk. They always have djs playing in the back. Different types of music and art. Stop by and see what's going on. It's way different then a lot of the bars and clubs around town.

This place is small and intimate, and the drinks aren't too overpriced. The sound system is good, and they even have a small patio outside.

The staff is unprofessional and rude. They can't even handle a small issue. They don't have many decent shows either.

We've been there when it was just us, we've been there when it was a raging DJ party and we've been there when a Jags game is on. For me, every experience is based on setting your expectations. I'm an old man now and I've been in all of this situations one million times previously. So I don't go into a raging DJ situation ready to get my phone out and start writing a review to state "the music was just too darn loud!". I also don't go there during a Jags game just to write a review that says "I had to wait a long time for a drink....can you even believe it??". Was the music loud? Yep. Was the wait really long during the Jags game? You better believe it. We went in expecting those things though because that's how the real world works. The drinks are great. The bar is nice, the staff is cool and you can't beat the views. Sounds like a good deal to me.

More shade would have been nice, but they had a decent beer selection. It's not as spacious as the rooftop at Hoptinger in 5 Points, and they don't offer any games. Just thought I'd mention that.

There is a building I pass every day near my home which caught my eye right away. Its stone façade and bright yellow sign flanked by two Medieval Knights, with the words "The Arena" across it in large block lettering stood out in comparison to its neighbors, a church and a discount furniture store. I quickly put on my detective cap and began scouring the internet for any explanation or reviews but information was sparse. I eventually found the website... The Arena | Jacksonville's Premiere Concert Venue... "The Arena is definitely one of Jacksonville's premiere and edgiest night scenes. With four stages, and full audio-surround sound, you will be blown away..." I ear marked it as a place to check out in the future. As Halloween grew closer The Arena began to look more and more like an off-beat community haunted attraction. A giant, ominous, clown face appeared over the door along with some additional lights and carnival décor. A new sign was added, "Carnevil". Of course I got back on the internet and found, "Welcome to Carnevil! The darkest and final act of the circus empire..." From the description it sounded pretty scary, I don't really do scary, but it was Halloween and we had no other plans and it was FREE. Now let me tell you, the free thing immediately set off some red flags, nothing is free but curiosity got the best of us. We invited some friends, put on our costumes and headed to the Arena but it was completely full and they sent us away with priority tickets for the next showing. Sunday night just my fiancé and I went back. Like I said, I don't really do scary well and as I stood in line my heart was racing. They announce that we are about to go in and once we are inside we will not be allowed to leave until the end. Honestly, we were half convinced that this place lures unsuspecting people in and keeps them forever... how else does a "Premiere Concert Venue" have almost no internet presence and NO reviews? The whole experience started off great. Creepy ghosts shambled through the lines, small groups were let into the theatre at a time, entering through a miniature haunted maze with all the scares and screams as a professional haunted house. There were plenty of scares for the audience while we waited for the show to start. The play had a great campy/spooky community theatre feel complete with frightening clowns, quality makeup, sound and lighting effects. Over and over I kept thinking, "How is this free?" and then it started... "drugs", "sex", "rebelling against authority"... "sin". Suddenly I realized I was at church. A preacher dressed as a cop stood center stage asking the audience to raise their hands, come up and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior to avoid a hell worse than the clown camp we just witnessed. I want to be clear... I do not have a problem with this being a church function; I appreciate the local church for pulling together a great community event... I do have a problem with being completely ambushed. Nowhere on TheArenaJax.com does it mention its affiliation with Victory Church. To solicit itself as one of the country's premier, edgy music venue, "showcasing a spectrum of internationally renowned artists" is more than slightly misleading. I have to say, I felt a bit violated to be lured into what appeared to be a fun community theatre, told I could not leave until it was over and then force fed a religious message while adults in scary masks and makeup stood blocking the exit. Here is the TL;DR: The production quality is great for a free event. I really enjoyed the first hour and a half of my experience. I would even encourage people to check out one of their events but be advised... this is a religious venue affiliated with its neighboring church. You will be held inside the building and asked to approach the stage to accept their message.

I am not one to like scary things but after seeing the show I had to see it again. The storyline and characters are well-made and very nice people. They put all they had into making this show work and after the show you get to meet them and get to know them personally. The theatrics of it were stunning and very luring and the sound effects blew me away. I loved how well the actors dressed up and scared people. They'd pop out of the dark, they sang along to hit songs from Slipknot and they made it a very good memorable experience. Along with the thrills they made some funny remarks during the show which made it more enjoyable and fun. If they were able to keep the show going on for more days I would go to all of them. For free it was worth it- if I had to pay, it would've been totally worth it. At the end of the show there was a part where a character made a statement about being "lost" and how he was able to come to terms with himself. Yes, they help people to believe but even if you aren't into Christianity or religion at all it didn't matter. They wanted people to remember the show and to tell everyone else back home about it. They wanted to inspire people to not be afraid and to become more than what people think of you. They don't force any part of religion on anyone and they don't force people into a prayer at all. They merely want to help people and for the people who were just there for the show, they got to see how much hard work and dedication the actors put into this to make it fun and memorable and thrilling. I absolutely loved it and would go to many more shows for the rest of my life for the experience. Amazing job well done.
