Casual dimly lit bar. This is a gay bar where you can talk to someone without yelling. And actually chat with people who are open to new faces. Friendly atmosphere!

This is a great hole in the wall for anyone that wants to hang out with a pal or two without all the drama and antics of other gay bars like the saloon and the gay 90s. Dont get me wrong, those bars can be fun. They are more in your face, louder, busier, drag queens, dancing. Soon to be 34, I realized there is an age threshold in my mind, being my reasoning not liking the saloon that much anymore. At 34, I'd rather just play it chill and chat with friends while playing pool, darts, or buck hunter. This is a great place for that. Easy to meet new people. Everyone is friendly with writing their name on the board to wait their turn for the next game of pool. Its in a cozy spot at the edge of downtown next to the Nicollet diner. There is a parking lot across the street that is free after 10pm! The bartenders are friendly and like to joke with you. Cash only bar, but beer is very cheap. $3 pints, $10 pitchers. If you are looking for a gay bar that is lighter, friendlier, a tad older, and with some career focused individuals, you cant miss The 19 Bar.

Please accord due respect to the pool table.

Ask the Community - 19 Bar

    Is it wheelchair accessible?

    Yes.

Does this place show Ru Paul's Drag Race?

    Sometimes

    How is the transgender crowd?

Don't listen to Jonathan's answer. You can't clock transgender people so easily. If it's queer friendly, I'm confident there are many trans people. Me (who is trans) and my trans friend are about to go tonight! So definitely trans people go. :)

Does this place have 18+ nights?

    No.

Great place to go for a drag brunch…read more I've stopped in here for a snack or a drink or two before, but this is the first time I went for a drag brunch. The tickets were cheaper than most places around, the comedy by the host is better, and the dancers were excellent. The drag show area is excellently done with professional lighting, full sound system, and dedicated bar. I can't comment on the food after this visit. I just got the ultimate Bloody Mary, which came with a mini-donut, chicken wings, bacon, celery, and more so it was basically a meal on its own! It was great, well mixed toppings were delicious, and it came with a chaser (the champagne of beers) All in all a great place to come to for a few drinks or a drag brunch!

If you are meeting a large group for casual drinks, this is a great place. However, we went for brunch (wanting food) and were very disappointed. We wandered in, sat down and then waited. There was no indication that you order everything at the bar. I had to go up and ask to get this info and menus. Our cocktails were fine, but my tater tot egg dish had 3 tatter tots and I was still hungry after. The sausage patties were literally inedible- you could not cut them with your fork. The breakfast burrito came out well, so that item seems safe. I ordered mozzarella sticks after (because I was still hungry), and they were ok, but had a very heavy breading shell. Overall, great ambiance, but I can not recommend going for food.

No different from your boss at a 9 to 5... honestly. I went here on my bday medium buzzed with my niece and a few ppl and one of the bartenders decided to give my niece something she DIDN'T pay for and told her she lost a strike for disagreeing with the bartender who tried to make her pay for something she didn't want or ask for. I'm the aunt so I get when my niece is in the wrong, 4 year difference and an engineering career on my part, but I heard every word and know the bartender just saw my POC niece and decided to cause a problem. Racism 100% bc I had others there who were just as buzzed or worse that the same bartender didn't cause a problem with... Also... The dance floor was deader than dead ( no wonder why). I would have had a better time in a parking lot with a speaker. This place is less fun than a funeral. Good luck. Maybe just drink at home considering the cost of this basement and the customer service. Had my first experience at The Saloon for Twin Cities Leather Weekend early November!…read more The thing that struck me most is the impressive square footage of the place. It essentially has four-ish connected but separate "chambers." You come in on the corner into the first one which has a typical bar set-up with lots of bar stools to sit at. Further back there's more table-and-chair style seating because it's nearby their kitchen where they serve hot food; there's also a pool table and darts throwing in this section. Deeper in there's a couple more bars in smaller segmented dual rooms, which is nearby the main restroom (there are several, at least three restroom locations inside). Quite a lot of urinals in this establishment, but a lack of stalls to sit and do your business, which was a little frustrating for someone like me whose equipment requires sitting to pee. No gender segregation though, which I'd expect in this day and age of a queer bar, but still nice to see. The final room is by far the largest, as it has a bar but also a large open area like a dance hall and stage. For this particular weekend it was utilized for hosting the contest, but also a puppy mosh (iykyk). Even as big as it was, it was PACKED during the contest portion of the weekend, making it difficult to see or hear the contest. (I think they could use a more up to date sound system.) We got food while we were there, and it was great. I got a BLT for just $9 and it was piled high with bacon- they did not skimp. Eating it all was a challenge for li'l ol' me. Meals come with ruffled chips that are very salty, but you can upgrade to other side options like french fries, onion rings (which my husband did), etc. for $2. The food was honestly affordable, especially for the amount they give you; I think they do this to discourage you from leaving the bar to go somewhere else for food, which is a solid strategy, haha. Parking around here is... tough, as you might expect in downtown. There is a nearby garage though just across the street behind the bar that I think is just $5 for evenings? I'm sure I'll be back for future events. I myself am not a casual bar-goer, so I don't really go out to these types of establishments unless they're hosting something fun. Always nice when a place is a community gathering space in addition to their regular business. I appreciate this place exists and serves the queer/kink community in that way.

There were a bunch of different rooms, which all had different music playing. Didn't explore that much. Mostly just out on the patio and on the dance floor, but I saw pool and other bar games. There was also a photo booth, which we used. Overpriced, but I guess you have to expect that from photo booths. Drinks were so cheap ($4)! And good dance music from the DJ. Biggest complaint is that there is only one stall in the bathroom (the rest are urinals). So it was always busy because obviously there are a lot of people who are trying to use the stall. Had to plan your pees.

A few things I don't love before I move on to the things I did like - everything was so sweet! All of their rubs, on the chicken, the brisket, and ribs, were so sugary. And the baked beans were like half sugar I swear, which I was very disappointed by. Their baked beans were especially sweet, and just not very good, which is so disappointing as they can easily be way better! (Like who uses kidney beans in baked beans)??? And the smoked salmon was definitely not smoked, at all. I did really like the ribs, they had a nice flavor. And the pork candy was good but had some incredibly chewy pieces. The brisket was good, no choice of lean or fatty but what can you except in minnesota lol. I will say the mac and cheese was really awesome, and the overall food was great.
