Later in the evening it was quite busy. They have both indoor and outdoor seating and simple but nice decor. They also have a standalone bar if you just want to grab a drink or are a solo diner. For drinks, I ordered the Not Your Father's Manhattan, which was fine but nothing special. Their cocktail menu is pretty classic, nothing innovative enough to warrant the price. We got bread to start but I would skip that next time. For food, I ordered the butternut squash ravioli but was disappointed when told they were all out, so I pivoted to the white fish. I opted for the vesuvio style and enjoyed the potatoes but the fish was slightly overdone and sauce a little too oily for me. I did really enjoy the lemon cake for dessert. Overall, an A-ok option if you're looking for a classic Italian eatery in the area.

We had caviar and drinks that were served in fun glasses and were topped with pretty little flowers. The whole experience really blew us away! We had reservations for 9pm and were able to be seated straight away. We arrived to find the address brought us to a barber shop. Fortunately, my husband had done some research and knew the drill--we made our way to a organ against a brick looking wall. On top of the organ was a bell--we rang the bell and shortly after the brick wall swung open and a woman came out to greet us. She had us play a tune on the organ and then brought us back into the speakeasy. The vibes are pitch perfect. Dimly lit with candles on tables and artful films playing on screens. We loved it. We were greeted straight away and brought water. You can also get a full meal here which we did not know but noted for our next visit. They had a special Valentine's menu as well as their regular cocktail menu. For my first cocktail, I got the paper plane which was light, lemony, and lovely with the adorable touch of a small paper plane pinned to the cocktail with a clothespin. For my second, I got one of their Valentine's specials which was essentially a Boulevardier made with a small float of mezcal on top. What an amazing addition to this classic cocktail! Truly, gave it added dimension, depth, and smoky flavor. I loved it. We also enjoyed their Valentine's dessert special, which was princess cake. It was a lovely blend of tart raspberry and warm almond--we loved it! The service was lovely throughout our experience. Get to it!

Which made it a little disappointing when we were asked to move about ten minutes later to accommodate a large group that came and expected 15-20 seats. The cocktail menu had a good variety. I ordered a dirty martini, which was fine but not something I would seek out. The olives were standard olives and, maybe I'm a snob, but I kind of expect a blue cheese or garlic stuffed olive at a place where I'm paying $16 for a cocktail. For my second round, I got a vodka soda, which was exactly what I expected. We ordered french fries and truffle fries, both of which came out quickly. They were crispy and hot, a solid pairing for a dirty martini adventure. I'll definitely come back - I might stick to wine or a more basic cocktail next time - but I loved the vibe.

My group ordered our drinks and waited for around 15 minutes before the server came back out asking for our order once again. My friends all ordered cocktails and I ordered a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. The server clearly wasn't sure what Cabernet Sauvignon was since she repeated it back to me as Sauvignon blanc. I corrected her and the cocktails came out, but another server/bartender came out asking what I had ordered. I repeated once again a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. He brought out a glass of white wine. I had to tell him that Cabernet Sauvignon was a red wine, not white, and then finally got the correct drink. It was unfortunately at least 30 minutes of being there and four conversations before I got my drink. All in all, I was pretty disappointed. With the type of bar this place is aiming to be, I wouldn't expect it to be so difficult to get a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Knotty pine on the walls and fish mounts every direction that you look. I started with an Old Fashion that checked the box, and the famed Shrimp Cocktail. The shrimp cocktail was five large shrimp that were firm in texture and clearly fresh. The cocktail sauce tasted like it was from a bottle, it wasn't terrible, but certainly not made in house. The burger was straightforward and the beef was high quality but it desperately needs seasoning (salt and pepper for goodness sake). I ordered my burger with Swiss cheese, that probably wasn't the right choice, American would've been better. The grilled onions were cooked well, but again just a sprinkle of salt would elevate the burger. The bacon was crispy, which was welcomed because the rest of the burger experience was just - meh. My tab was $48 and some change, which isn't terrible in today's economy, however, I've had $48 meals elsewhere that were head and shoulders above. It was clear that this is a long standing tradition in the area, but the food taste is stuck in the past.

We got the burger and truffle fries to share, along with / rolls and the karrage chicken. The burger was good with the caramelized onions but nothing significant to write home about. My favorite items though were the truffle fries, and the hot honey karaage we asked for the honey on the side so that we're able to share with our little but it was super crispy, and the chicken bites were juicy and delicious it didn't even need the honey. I truthfully don't love pickles but the pickles were delicious and I ate them all! The sushi rolls were both really fresh and had great flavor. Overall a good experience I'd like to come back during regular hours to try their regular menu. We've now sampled their hummus trio (the edamame hummus was a revelation), the hot honey fried chicken brisket sliders, their BLTA (bacon-lettuce-tomato-avocado on grilled sourdough), and more than one order of their Baja fish tacos, which were absolutely delicious. If it were just the food and service, I would've rated the Lawn Bar 5 stars--but the drinks were another story. The luscious-sounding mixed drinks were not up to snuff. When I order a mixed drink, I expect it to actually have alcohol in it! If there was any alcohol in any of the drinks we ordered, it amounted to maybe a thimble-full. I even ordered a drink called the Country + Western because it promised both whiskey AND vodka (plus lemonade and mint.) Sounds good, right? Well, nope. It tasted like lemon syrup with a mere hint of whiskey. I mean, it's a BAR. The drinks should be the star but they basically suck. I highly recommend the Lawn Bar for everything except the mixed drinks--stick to the wine list or craft beers, try the Baja fish tacos, and enjoy the superb ambiance and music that is always at the heart of any Ravinia Festival experience.
