Sashimi Lunch Bento Box
Robert W.

I've been to 18-8 many times and am always very happy with my food. Their lunch specials are really good with a pretty wide selection available for a fairly reasonable price especially because good sushi can really get expensive. For lunch, I recommend the sashimi bento box (pictured). It comes with rice, salad, California roll, two fried sushi pieces, and then a good sized sashimi platter. I have also had many of their special rolls and the lobster mango is my favorite. If you have never had mango in sushi rolls before, I highly recommend it! Just be mindful if you do takeout or pickup that it will be a very long time and their estimates will always be like 1/2 of the actual time.

18-8 is one of my favorite neighborhood spots for sushi! I got a ton of takeout from them during the pandemic and was always satisfied with how carefully they packaged each order and made sure to pay attention to the special instructions. Now they are open for indoor seating although I've yet to actually take advantage of that. Located within the Rotunda shopping center, parking can be a bit challenging depending on the day and time. I normally get some combination of sushi, miso soup, and maybe a fried appetizer of sorts. They have a pretty good lunch Maki deal during the week that comes with two or three sushi rolls of choice, a salad with ginger dressing and miso soup. It's a lot of food for a good price ($10-$13 depending on how many rolls you get)! I will say the one thing I got from here that I was not a fan of was the bento box. I ordered it with the salmon and it was lacking in flavor. That said, I haven't tried any of the other meat entrees so maybe the chicken or beef might be better? Pro tip: order through their website for pickup to avoid extra fees from third party apps. It's usually ready within 15-20 minutes!

Sushi is always solid. Nice service and the inside is always clean. 10/10 recommend if you're in the area!

Another takeout dinner from 18-8 and overall very good. They are available on Doordash but with a significant markup in prices so if you can pick up your order you'll save a fair amount. The food is not quite as good as Sho You in Fed Hill (which is the best sushi in Baltimore) and is a bit more expensive, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. For appetizers we had the shumai dumplings (steamed shrimp dumplings), the Gyoza (pan fried pork dumplings), seaweed salad, edamame, spicy edamame and duck roll. The dumplings, both kinds, were fantastic and the ponzu-like dipping sauce they came with was perfect. The seaweed salad was standard and good and duck roll was okay but had very little duck in it. I would suggest adding more duck meat to make this a better dish. The edamame was standard but the spicy edamame left something to be desired. It was covered in a kind of spicy mayo that wasn't all that good. I would not order it again. We had 3 special rolls, the Tiger, Dragon King and Tuna Amazing and one regular roll, the Alaska (salmon, cucumber and avocado). The Tiger is Salmon, eel, topped with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, eel, spicy mayo sauce, crunch, masago & scallion on top. It was good but didn't blow me away. Same with the Tuna Amazing which was good but not as flavorful as I would have thought given the interesting mix of different kinds of tuna. It is White tuna tempura, spicy tuna, avocado, topped with pepper tuna and a special sauce, caviar, and scallion. The Dragon King was the best, with Soft shell crab and snow crab in sesame soy wrapper topped with eel and avocado. I would get this one again for sure but I'm not as sure about the others. Don't get me wrong, they were good, just not fantastic. The nigiri was quite well prepared. We had tuna, salmon, yellowtail, unagi, scallop and octopus. All were very good quality and delicious fish. Reasonable serving size as well. If I have the time to drive across town to get to Sho You, that will always be my top choice for sushi but 18-8 is still very good and a lot closer so we'll be back and if you live in the area I suggest you check it out as well.

Volcano Roll

Decided to stop by late on a Friday after movie night. There were lots of tables available and the atmosphere was pretty nice. We were greeted pretty quickly upon arriving and seated immediately. After perusing the menu we decided on the Volcano Roll and I believe the Sunshine Roll. When our meal arrived I found the rice on the outside of both rolls to be extremely dry and I found the taste of them both to be unremarkable. On a positive note our food did arrive at our table quickly however I can't recommend this restaurant and don't anticipate returning.

Food was good. Atmosphere is causal with plenty of seatings & group seating. Service was pleasant and timely. I recommend.

I happened to be in the Rotunda, needed food and this place had a lunch special for $9.95 of various Chinese/Thai/Asian dishes on the menu so I decided to try the Chicken & Broccoli in brown sauce + Thai chicken curry. I opted for one with a salad, the other with miso soup (included with lunch special). It was a 15 minute wait, they have the front entrance blocked off by a table though so you can't wait inside. You also must order & pay at this blockade and wait for a staff member to show up and detect your presence since there's no one standing right inside (awkward). Food was ready by then. We sat at some tables set up outside of the pizza place nearby and ate under the hot sun... I was really thrown off by the strange taste of the "curry" which was a thick reddish-orange slurry tasted a lot like ketchup and nothing like Thai red curry. It consisted mostly of random vegetables and a little bit of thinly sliced chicken breast. The chicken & broccoli in brown sauce was SOO SALTY and they put a ton of cornstarch in the dark soy sauce base that it wasn't very easy to brush off the clumps of sauce. Salad was fresh though, and the miso soup tasted a bit watered down. I could tell it's one of those mediocre Chinese/Asian places that sell a hodge podge of random Asian food not correctly prepared. Flavors are VERY OFF and not traditional. I'm only giving it 3 stars because the price point was lower than most of the other establishments in this area (where the food appears overpriced).

This review was for my dinner experience at 2/15/2022. Arrived at around 8:30 and the place only had two tables of guests. Still it took me 5 minutes and a handwave for someone to take my order. Food was standard, but midway through my meal the staff started mopping the floor with some detergents with strong odor that was extremely repulsive. Almost made me stop eating and pack up for takeaway.

We have been coming to 18-8 for years. Great sushi restaurant in Baltimore. Family run restaurant. Enjoyed the cloudy sake and would highly recommend if you have never tried it.

Conveniently located in The Rotunda, 18-8 has great lunch specials! For $13, the steak teriyaki bento box came with 6 California rolls, rice, 2 fried shumai, salad, and a choice of miso or hot and sour soup. Great value, teriyaki sauce was good, and there was a lot of food to go around. Pork gyoza was both tender and crispy. Will definitely come back to try drinks and more food!

When I first walked in the customer service was great, the place was empty for a for a Friday night. The waiter was nice. Thee decor was nice, with a nice bar. They started cleaning, while we were there, and closing time was not until 11pm. We order the Bento Boxes chicken and salmon. I requested the hot and sour soup, the soup was good. The Bento boxes the food tasted frozen from a box not fresh. No flavor at all. The California rolls had imitation meat. This was my first in last time. Only reason why I gave them, three stars was based on the decor, and customer service.

This is Puerto Rican pitorro, also known as ron cañita, made with care and intention rather than gimmickry. Many local liquor stores now carry the brand, and it is well worth picking up a bottle, but visiting the distillery is an experience in itself. The founder is a fellow Puerto Rican born retired military member, a background I share, and like me, he has put down roots in Maryland. That story is reflected clearly in the brand's own framing, "Puerto Rican born, Maryland made." The space feels grounded and unpretentious, and that sensibility carries through to the hospitality. We arrived late on a Saturday and were still welcomed warmly, never rushed. We were taken care of by the founder's daughter, who was exceptionally kind, attentive, and knowledgeable. She guided us through a flight that included the traditional pitorro, almond, pineapple, coffee, coconut chai, and several seasonal offerings. The flavors were thoughtful and well balanced; even the infused expressions retained a clear rum backbone rather than drifting into novelty. We enjoyed them enough to leave with several bottles. This is artisanal pitorro done right, rooted in Puerto Rican tradition and confidently made in Maryland. Buying it locally is convenient, but going to the distillery is where the people, the story, and the spirit fully come together.

Always great service by bar manager Charlie, fantastic food and beverage menu and options. My favs so far are the grilled wings and chicken tortilla soup. The drinks are pretty awesome, and Charlie the Great can alter beverages to your preference if you prefer. This is an overall mezcal bar, but they have other libations as well. My fav is John Updike's Old Fashioned. My son ordered and loved the Strawberry Gin & Tonic. This establishment is a great conversation starter, and I look forward to returning asap.

The service was top-notch from the moment we walked in. The hostess even gave us a little tour so we could decide where we wanted to sit. On our first visit, we chose the bar and completely lucked out, we got to meet the cocktail master and some of the other staff while they were doing tasting tests. They walked us through the history and inspiration behind the cocktails and creations, which made the experience feel so much more personal. The atmosphere is lovely. I started with the Japanese Breakfast, which was tart and boozy, while my husband got the Pineapple Express, which had such a unique flavor. I didn't love the fizz, but he absolutely did! We then asked our server for recommendations and ended up with the Duck Season for me and the Spanish Moss for him. The Spanish Moss was a little too sweet for my taste, but the Duck Season was, without exaggeration, one of the most interesting things I've ever tasted. It was savory, rich, and deep, almost velvety and chocolate-like, despite not actually being chocolate. The entire combination of flavors was incredible. On our next visit, we sat outside, and the ambiance was just as wonderful. This time we tried a Stranger in Paradise and an I'm a Baijiu A Drink, and both had incredibly detailed and thoughtful flavor profiles. Between the cocktails, the staff, the atmosphere, and the fact that every drink feels like its own little experience, I absolutely cannot wait to go back!

Tastes like home! We ordered the chicken kelaguen with titiyas; shrimp patties; pancit; red rice & chicken with daikon, fina'denne, and dinanche; butter mochi (with deconstructed coconut candy); and Chamorro empanadas. Everything was so good! That fina'denne, kelaguen, and pancit were on point!! The chalakiles (filling inside the empanada) was so flavorful. Mmm! More flavorful than I'm used to! That was nice. The shell wasn't hard-crunchy like how many make it in Guam, but the shell still had a crunch to it! The shrimp patties were shaped differently than I'm used to, but it was still delicious, especially with the sauce it came with. The butter mochi was the perfect ending to our meal! Those alone are worth making the trip out. The musubi is better than my grandmother's. I've also enjoyed the steamed buns and the chicken skewers. The desserts were phenomenal, house made, not a hint of Cysco or us foods slop. I can't recommend this place enough. The interior is extremely comfy and almost transports you to another country. With unique seating options, if we lived closer we'd be regulars at happy hour. Paul told us today about a chef curated menu that we plan to try out for our next visit. In a world of corporate owned restaurants serving uninspired slop, places like The Duchess need to be protected.

The flavor of the pizza itself was good but it could've used a sprinkle of flaky salt or even a drizzle of balsamic or chili oil to liven it up. Walking in, the space was simple and understated. Nothing overly elaborate or pretentious, just a warm, comfortable bar area. The bartender was busy when I arrived but immediately acknowledged me with a friendly "I'll be right with you." Such a small gesture, but one I genuinely appreciated. What followed was simply wonderful hospitality. Not over the top, not performative, just warm, genuine, and welcoming. I had quite a few questions about the menu, particularly the rum selections, and every question was answered patiently and thoughtfully. Based on the bartender's recommendation, I ordered an Old Fashioned made with Rhum J.M Fumée Volcanique. Smoky, smooth, beautifully balanced, and absolutely delicious! I've included a picture because this rum was a wonderful discovery. For food, I started with the crab fritters. They arrived warm, beautifully prepared, and delicious. My first bite struck me as a little salty, but as I continued eating, the creamy sauce, with what tasted like a hint of mustard, brought everything into beautiful balance. The flavors really came together. Next came the short ribs (forgot to take a pic ... was so into the ambiance and spirit of the place, service and meal) , served over what I believe was rice, with a wonderfully soft, almost creamy texture that I absolutely loved. The short ribs were tender, flavorful, and had just the right touch of heat. I added a little salt, but that's probably more about my personal love of salt than anything missing from the dish! I actually saved some of my fritters to make sure I had enough room for the short ribs, and I'm glad I did. But what really made the experience special was the atmosphere. There's something to be said for a place that doesn't try too hard. No fuss, no unnecessary fanfare, no exaggerated hospitality. Just genuinely good food, a wonderful cocktail, kind people, and a peaceful, comfortable space to enjoy it all. Even as I was leaving, the farewell was warm and understated. Nothing rehearsed, just a sincere thank you and the feeling that I'd be welcomed back anytime. Pink Flamingo has that rare quality of making you feel at home without making a production of it.
