Nikkei is located in the newer shops above the Shops of Wailea. Nikkei is a fusion that combines Japanese and Peruvian elements. Went for a late lunch and missed the lunch crowd. Delicious food and excellent service. Ordered the Ceviche sampler, Hamachi Crudo, Wailea Ahi Nigiri, Surfing Salmon roll and affogato. Be sure to save room for the affogato! Everything was tasty. The Wailea Ahi Nigiri reminded me of a flavor profile I had in Japan. I would go back and order a bunch of those as a meal. Met the fisherman who supplies the restaurant with their fresh fish. If someone asked me about it, I would probably tell them it wasn't worth it or recommend another similar place Atmosphere (2/5): When we walked in, the place was very empty since they are brand new and only opened a few weeks ago. I immediately went to the bathroom, where I unfortunately was swarmed by various flies. Additionally, this place had an overall vibe of a sports bar. They had a single musician playing live music, mostly country - which doesn't fit the vibe of sushi or Hawaii. Then the restaurant also had the fights on, which felt very sports bar esq. The food was excellent. Had suomono soup, nigiri sushi, and ahi carpaccio. Would get all again. Kind of sterile/modern ambience. Around 6 PM a chill and talented solo guitarist started playing a nice mix or rock/island style tunes. Those are all the positives. Some surprises were no alcohol ( might be able to BYO, but did not ask) An 18% gratuity is added to all bill and the service this evening did not reflect that. Maybe all the staff are new, but seemed like the waiter did not know the menu, had a mixed up order, and every interaction with the staff was awkward. Food and service was good, what left a distaste in my mouth was the 18% auto gratuity added to the bill with no notice and we were just a party of 2. I asked the server about this when reviewing our bill and he said it was the owners decision to do this. Parties of 8 fine, but a couple is crazy. Most diners in Wailea can afford to tip well and I usually go 20% min. But to be forced to pay 18% with no notice is just poor business. I would have probably left at least 20%, but simply left it at 18%. I know this is a new establishment and this is no way to earn good reviews. Hmmmm. I love the space and the food is very delicious, but it is far from a well oiled machine....We came for a "snack" and ordered 2 rolls and it took over 60 minutes to get them. The restaurant had about 10 tables that were sat, and there seemed to be 2 servers. Our waitress looked confused when we ordered and asked us to point to the item on the menu. After 15 minutes she came to our table and told us they were out of one of the rolls, so we picked another. After an hour we contemplated leaving. We watched every table around us get their food late. One party of 4 behind us got each of their ordered items within 10 minutes of each other so they all were awkwardly waiting for everyone's food to arrive. The space is exceptionally beautiful in its minimalism design with an exquisite sounding menu however all of this is cancelled out by our waitress who had no idea about anything on the menu-appearing dazed & confused-a full restaurant with no food served on any tables, and us waiting for two simple rolls for over 75 minutes in which we still didn't receive any food and ultimately forced to cancel our order and left hungry and with the worst service. We went to 1111 Nikkei for lunch. Sat at the bar. The bartender was friendly. The bar stools not so comfortable. The place is new and really clean. The food was delicious, the presentation was beautiful and it tasted super fresh. Where they lost a star is for the price, it all is way overpriced in my opinion and to top it off, they add 18% gratuity on your bill which I didn't see written on their menu, and almost ended up double tipping until my friend pointed it out, maybe I missed it, but it came as a surprise. read more

We walked in without a reservation and were seated at the only available outdoor table on the north end of the patio... after asking if they served cocktails. We waited about fifteen minutes, and after noticing that the menu only listed 'mocktails,' I went inside to inquire--again--with the maitre'd. He then said that they don't yet have their liquor license, but that red or white wine would be complementary. I am a first-timer at this place. It is the best sushi I have ever had; it melts in your mouth. I barely use my shoyu, and the taste is better without it. The ambiance is perfect, the music isn't that loud, and the lighting is ideal. Service was excellent and observant, refilling our water every time it was empty. We were craving sushi and saw this restaurant from the road. We got seated quickly and given menus. Our server came around with water and to inform us they do not have a liquor license so they were limited to wine. We ordered some nigiri - scallops, tuna and taco. 2 rolls - spicy tuna and some type of salmon roll. The food came out fairly quickly. I can't say anything was memorable. They appeared to be short handed since we only saw our waitress twice. No one came to refill water. We only got half a glass with our meal. You know how there is a process of entering a restaurant and someone greets you by saying, "welcome, do u have reservations?" or "one moment, the host/someone will be out to help you." none of that happened. We walked in, stood there waiting to hear acknowledgment by the 3 males employees at the bar and nothing happened. You can tell they didn't want to engage. I said, "how does this work? Do we sit ourselves or wait to be seated?". And it was very obviously none of them wanted to engage with us as it was not their job. One of the 3 males came and said "I'll get the someone". We stood there awkwardly waiting for "someone" which was the hostess, which also turned out to be our server as well. The female server was nice and did her best. She was fine. The boy food runner was so young. You can tell he was nervous just to talk. Other staff at bar couldn't care less to work. It's obvious the staff needs to training on what it means to work. When you apply at a job that means you come in to work. You can tell who just wants to come in, do nothing and leave with a check. We really need to leave because it was awkward. No liquor license yet when we visited so they had a complimentary pisco sour cocktail for us and that more than made up for the slight inconvenience. Don't waste your time or money. We ordered 5 rolls and it took over 2 hours. Even when the restaurant cleared out we waited forever. Roll was about as thick as a pencil. Server was friendly but we sat with empty drinks for over 20 minutes as they walked by the table numerous times. Seems they had a lot of staff to provide such poor service. read more
