When I checked it via TestDisk on macOS, the HDD appeared as 0 bytes / 0 GiB, indicating a much deeper disk or partition-level issue. It turned out the PCB was damaged, the translator was corrupted, and two heads were misaligned. Despite the severe damage, Kotar successfully recovered 100% of my data, and I am incredibly happy to have everything back. I trusted them from the start because of their "no data, no charge" policy. What makes them even better is that they are a trustworthy, local business right here in San Jose. Unlike many of the large data recovery services, you don't have to mail your drive away to some random location. If you need data recovery, look no further than Kotar!

I received "No" after "No", but Ray reached out and said he had an idea. My gaming laptop was no longer powering on and due to its model, essentially every repair shop said they couldn't handle it. I was able to come by and drop off my laptop for a diagnostic check. An hour later Ray was done and sent me a highly detailed Diagnostic report with findings, causes, and recommendations. My issue required a full motherboard replacement so we weren't able to proceed with any fixes. Regardless, I am grateful to the expertise and support Ray has given me for the laptop. I called them at 5:50pm and spoke with Ray "I think he is the owner" anyway I told him what was going on and he said to come on down and that he would wait for me. When I arrived I noticed that they have a big Yelp banner on the window, I walked in and spoke with Ray about the problem and showed him a picture of what the error was, he was up front with me and explained that if the hard drive was bad that he would not be able to save my data. I told him to do his best to save my data. The next day he texted me with a quote and said that he would be able to fix it and save my data. I told him to fix it. About 3 hours later he texted me again and said to come on by and pick it up. Now when I arrived he didn't just give me my computer and send me on my way, he sat me down and explained that I have 3 different options to save my data just in case the hard drive or computer crashes in the future. He also said that if I'm not sure how to back up the hard drive or need help with anything to call him and he would walk me through it. When all was said and done, he charged me $299 out the door and my machine is working flawlessly!! Thank you Ray! You got a customer for life.

The diagnosis was simply that a "power chip" was damaged, and they recommended replacing the entire motherboard for about $690 because they don't do chip-level repairs. They also charged me for the diagnostic ~$100, even though their website advertises a free diagnostic. The laptop still smells strongly of coffee, which also made me question whether it was actually cleaned or how thorough the cleaning was. Overall, the turnaround was longer than promised, communication required follow-up, and the diagnosis was too vague to give me confidence in spending nearly $700 on a motherboard replacement.

I was asked if I wanted expedited service and of course I said "yes" to the charge of $99 since I needed it turned around fast. On Friday I called to find out the status and was told that it needed to be "opened" and if I approved (another charge) with no commitment as to when it would be fixed. Saturday was the tech's day off and they are not open on Sunday so no apparent rush to fix it. On Monday I was asked if I needed the data. I had originally said "no" because I had my data backed up on Carbonite. I asked about the Apps that I had and the tech said they would be wiped as well so I decided to save the data and apps. This was a $199 charge to "determine if the data was salvageable" by testing the SSD. I was then called and told that yes, the SSD was salvageable and there would be a $599 charge to recover it. Each step was a dagger because I needed my computer and the data/apps so I approved the charges. I finally got my computer back on Monday afternoon with a $1,600 bill feeling like I should have just bought a new computer and put up with reinstalling my apps. I got the computer home, hooked into my system and it worked fine. The next morning it was dead again. I hooked it up to a spare charger (bypassing the powered hub) and the computer was back to life. The entire problem was my hub charger! At no time was I advised that a charger might have been the problem and was instead overcharged for work that wasn't needed (probably not even opened to get to the SSD that I was bill around $800 for testing and recovery.) After his explanation I am now better informed of the work and charges and better appreciate what was needed to get it restored to working order. He plugged it into a charger for thirty seconds, saw it doesn't work, then said I have no idea what's going on with your phone. He's supposed to be an expert. Then he said to open the phone I need to pay a minimum of 250 dollars just to proceed. He called it free diagnostic but it's not free. If there's more damage he'll call me with additional charges. If I don't agree to pay more, I still have to pay the 250 dollar minimum cost just for opening the phone. That's not a free diagnostic. That's a scam. Don't go there. Update after the owner's reply: His reply confirms my complaint. In the store he told me to my face that he had no idea what was wrong with my phone. He never said the word motherboard. Yet in writing he now claims he diagnosed a "motherboard-related power issue." If he had actually found that, he would have said so in person. He did not, because all he did was plug my phone into a charger. By his own words, any real diagnosis requires opening the phone, and that only happens after I pay 250 dollars toward a repair. So the free diagnostic tells you nothing. You cannot find out what is wrong without paying first. That is the whole problem. He also says the visit was recorded. I was never told I was being recorded. If he truly has that recording, post it. It will show he told me he had no idea what was wrong, and that 250 dollars was required before he would even open the phone.
