Have lived in Newark pretty much my whole life and have never tried this place but always wanted to. Finally made a point to come here and was not disappointed. Really good food and friendly service and prices are reasonable. Will definitely be back!

2-piece fish and 4-piece shrimp combo

LENT 2024: FOURTH FRIDAY OF LENT When this place first opened I used to go to this fish and chip joint about 4-5 times a year as there wasn't a lot of places in the East Bay at that time serving fish and chips. I always loved their fish but their fries not so much; the fish had that light, crispy breading whereas the fries were too soggy. Last Friday there were three places I considered to eat. I decided at the last minute to come to 101 Fish & Chips. I ordered a large combo that consisted of 2 pieces of fish and 4 shrimps along with fries. The fries I had in the past used to look flimsy. The fries I had at 101 Fish & Chips that day were crinkle-cut fries. I like the look of crinkle fries because they looked crispy. At 101 Fish & Chips the crinkle fries were crispy. The fish was moist while the breading maintained that light crispiness without being too oily as sometimes in the past. Then why didn't I give this place a higher rating? First the mozzarella sticks were a huge disappointment. They weren't fully cooked as the mozzarella wasn't melted as I was eating a stick of cold mozzarella stick. Second this place wasn't opened for customers to eat inside but only for take-out. I overheard the owner saying to a customer that place isn't opened to eat in during Lent but will open to dine in after Easter. Like what? This place could make more money on Fridays during Lent especially catering to Catholics who can only eat fish on Lent Friday. Since there are now quite of number of fish and chip joints in the East Bay I'm more willing to try those places.

I have wondered about this place for a very long time. Wonder no more. Place is open 3 days a week so we thought maybe it's a hidden gem. It's meh. The place is small and clean. The prices are ok. The person who took our order was nice. I ordered the special combo which was fish, oysters, scallops, shrimps, and fries. The scallops were so tiny I wondered what they were at first when I got my basket. The shrimps and oysters are ok. The tarter sauce needs improvements. Its mostly mayo. The fries were obviously frozen and nothing special. The fish was good. Everything was fried just right so nothing was overly oily. I didn't see them offer tap water. I didn't want to risk it and brought my own water bottle. My other friends came later and there were barely many fries in their basket. Odd compared to our serving within the hour we ordered. Overall if you are craving fried fish, sure do take out and have your own tarter sauce ready.

It's the one place that came up on the map selling pure fish and chips. They didn't answer the phone so headed over to place a pick up an order. There is no dining room available. We barely made it at closing but were pleased to see the door swing open and people waiting for their food. Placed the order and waiting outside we perused the large menu on the window. There are a lot of different choices and combinations. They whip a wide variety of battered fried food well. The food was pretty good. I liked everything being crunchy on the outside. Aside from everything being plain tasting on the inside it wasn't a deal breaker. The only downside was the yucky tartar sauce. I do not like sweet sauce. It was lacking the tart amd texture like I'm used to. Portions were decent for the price. Would return but would get my own sauce.

My dad and grandma's favorite fish and chips spot in this side of the bay. He grew up going to it! The lady at the counter remembered my dad and grandma. They have some Asian food options too, like sesame balls. Smells really great when you walk through the door.

Calamari

Ordered calamari. It was rubbery and seemed old...French fries were also a disappointment.. fish was okay. Calamari was not edible. Good way to waste 7 bucks

But the real secret of this nondescript restaurant and bar is its menu of authentic Indian food. We ordered a variety of items including Egg Bhurji, scrambled eggs cooked with onions, chilies, and spices; as well as a traffic light array of curries: the deep red Butter Chicken, made of boneless chicken in a creamy tomato sauce; the yellow Lamb Korma, made of boneless lamb chunks in a creamy yogurt curry made with ground nuts; and the green Palak Paneer, a pureed spinach curry with chunks of paneer. Finally, the Hyderabad Goat Curry was made of bone-in goat cubes in a dark brown curry made of onion, tomato, ginger, and garlic. All of the curries went nicely with the Tandoori Naan and Onion Kulcha, freshly-made flatbreads that were highlights in and of themselves! Overall, the flavors here were on point--my favorite items were the Palak Paneer, the Lamb Korma, and the Tandoori Naan, but everything was delicious and came at a good value.

And if you still manage to walk in, it's just meh. You are welcomed by this sad looking bar (if you can call it that, some people have home bars that look more enticing). There was only one table occupied and the layout, walls covered with TVs is all a sad scene. With buffalo wild wings right nearby, people interested in watching sports would probably just go there. The owners need to narrow down on what this place is trying to be. Food: we ordered chilli paneer and peanut masala- both were really good. We also got tangerine wheat beer which was good too. The pourhouse setup is easy to use- you get a bracelet and can get whichever beer you want using it. Decent selection.

The food came in what felt like a few minutes after we ordered and everything was hot and comforting. I ordered the country fried steak which comes with toast, potatoes and eggs your way. The gravy was so smooth and done well, the potatoes are sweetened which was interesting. The only reason this wasn't a 5 star for me was the country fried steak wasn't the tastiest, it was okay but the best that I've had in terms of texture and seasoning. I am very opened to returning to try their omelette. Portions are big here.

step foot in country way and you'll have your patriotism (or any remainder of it after the past…read moreyear) tested. it reeks of cigarettes and buttcheeks and the dishes presented look like all american slop. does it taste good? no! but in some ways you'll rediscover your love of america right in this little establishment. it's the place of memories, whether you want to reminisce or create new ones. this is the place you go when you're hungover, or when you're a broke teenager looking for a place to loiter with your massive friend group (there's only two girls, you have a crush on one of them, she's probably gay), or when you come back from a trip abroad in a country that does not have enough grease in their local cooking. you come to celebrate your 95 year old grandma's birthday (by the way she doesn't remember your name), and to go out with your football team (apparently your team has done well this season; coach naively offers to treat, so everyone except coach orders three dishes each and complains of hunger an hour after eating), and to meet up with random friends of your parents (you didn't even know they existed, and they spend an hour commenting on the following: your height, love life, and college applications). either way you want some cheap, easy, horrible food. you choke down your dish that's got oil puddles on the side and mysterious radioactive sauces because the portions are huge and binge eating is nigh. you save half, or a quarter, or maybe none of your dish for later, knowing that you will most definitely forget about the leftovers and trash them when they turn moldy. this is a true diner - arguably one of the most waffle house-esque establishments in fremont, and thus a quintessential american experience. you have to live it to understand it all: the questionably quick service, the servers stacking full plates on one arm, the pile of smuckers jam on every table, the chattering in multiple languages, and most importantly the trashy food. so would i encourage you to come here? ideally not at all! you will be disappointed beyond measure. but if you're like me and disillusioned with your american-ness you can come here and renew your patriotism. 3 stars for the experience.

We parked in a tight space and opened the door to a full waiting area. It was about 5:30 PM. Yelp said to get ready to be seated. Someone that was after us was seated first so I went to the waiter to ask about it. He immediately sat us at a table. We ordered a lot: lobster roll, crab cake, clam chowder, the bag of shrimp, crab legs, and clams (i think?) with the spiciest sauce. Clam chowder: worth ordering. Id order this again. It exceeded my expectations. I might even say it was good or even slightly better than ones found at santa cruzs pier. Crab cake: pass on it. It was nicely cooked. Moist in the inside and crunchy on the outside. The crab blend wasnt my cup of tea. Lobster roll: get if you love lobster hoagie bun - yum! Lobster filling was missing some flavors. It tasted like lobster and hoagie bun. I wanted more of a creamy mixture. The bag: there was a LOT. Expensive at $78. Very spicy! So get it if you like spice. We did. I cant say to get it or not to get it. Loved that we were given bibs. Loved our waitress who checked on us. It is a family business. Would come back if craving for clam chowder. I would get everything else somewhere else and eat the seafood in the bag only if i had mad cravings and didnt want to drive farther.

The Pricing Confusion: We placed our order at 5:05 PM, and the server initially took it. However, a few minutes later, they came back to explain it wasn't actually a happy hour deal, but a lunch special. This was frustrating since we had called to confirm and had already ordered. While our other food arrived earlier, we waited over an hour for the shrimp. We watched five separate tables who arrived after us get served their shrimp first. Even though we told the staff a couple of times that our shrimp hadn't arrived yet, we were still left waiting. The shrimp didn't finally arrive until 6-6:10pm. They eventually explained they thought we had already been served and suspected our order had accidentally been packed into a to-go order. The food itself was actually delicious, the shrimp and garlic noodles were very flavorful. I don't even have a photo of the shrimp because by the time it finally arrived, we were so hungry we just started eating! To their credit, once they realized the error, they slashed the price of the 1lb shrimp and gave us free rice to make it right The food is great, but the kitchen organization was a mess during our visit. Management was honest and tried to fix the mistake, but waiting an hour for the main part of your meal while watching five other tables eat is a major headache.
