I haven't been here in like 23 years. I was super thrilled to see it still there! Got a bacon egg and cheese on a bagel. It was soft and perfect. I had the grilled veggie sandwich on a hero: roasted assorted veggies, roasted red peppers, and bruschetta -- it usually comes with mozzarella but I asked for it without to make it vegan, except I forgot to ask if the bruschetta had Parmesan in it (I think it does). After waiting 45 minutes for two sandwiches, one of the six people taking orders and running around like chickens with their heads cut off noticed we'd been waiting for a while. She went to find our food and realized the kitchen didn't have a ticket for our order. Somehow, it got lost in the 6 feet between the counter and the sandwich slicers. Maybe it was because their ordering system is from the Stone Age. This deli has the best sandwiches in the rockaways hands down. I have gotten the chicken parm hero, the Thursday special (hot roast beef mozz cheese and gravy), and a chicken cutlet hero and they are all so delicious. The secret here is the bread. Their fresh baked rolls are insane. Any sandwich here is elevated because the bread is so good. I tried the cookies in the display case and they weren't anything I would try again. The cookie tasted a little stale and it did not represent the quality of their products. HEY..why not wait until they walk out the door if you feel like talking badly about the people who pay your salary. Besides that, their food is overpriced, they close before the time posted on the door, almost $10 for a sandwich even if it's on a roll instead of a hero, I saw a dead fly next to a cookie I was going to buy, they don't accept debit or credit and their staff smoke more than a chimney. "You have a treat in store for you!" -- that was Denise, who introduced herself and asked my name. I wanted a sandwich and saw that there was a Cuban sandwich special. I ordered the Cuban and paid for it. Then it turned out that my Dad wanted me to bring back some bread. Could I order some? No problem! How much do I owe you? "Welcome to the 101Deli"! The sandwich was carefully prepared and beautifully wrapped. It was large and it was perfect! At $8, it was fairly priced. I've had Cuban sandwiches before, and this one did not break new ground. If I wanted a sauteed onion hero, I would have asked for a sauteed onion hero. I work in the area and 101 is very close. I usually walk past because it often takes 20 minutes just to get a sandwich. I saw the sausage and pepper hero special and ordered it. True to form, 20 minutes later I cashed out and left. I got to work and unwrapped the hero. The bread was so soggy I couldn't even bite into it. I then opened the sandwich and saw only sauteed onions on the surface. I pulled them out and collected a whole onion. There were a few strips of red and green peppers and half of a cut up sweet italian sausage. This onion sandwich cost $8.00. Don't bother with this place. What can I say about this one time landmark business. It's best days are at least Thirty years in the past . The counter staff looks like they are on parole from rehab. There's that weird shiny glaze on everything in the deli cases just like the left out all day macaroni salad at a family picnic . The sandwiches just aren't good anymore. It's sad they sell too many things and they don't move oxidizing in the case . I wish they would concentrate on making a better sandwich a good potato salad a cole slaw that's not sitting in the bucket of milky Mayo water and a Mac and tuna salad. Being a native of the Rockaways, I've been coming to this deli for years, the staff is always very accommodating, yes sometimes they get extremely busy but that is the nature of the beast. Their sandwiches are amongst the best I've had anywhere, the bread is baked fresh on the premises and they only use Boar's head. Their sandwiches are huge and can honestly be split between 2 people, and the shop is also extremely clean. When you walk in, you walk straight up to the counter and place your order. They write it down right in front of you, repeat the order and ask you if your order is complete. If so, they pass on the order to the guys on the side to prepare the sandwich, you can actually watch ur sandwich get made. While all of this is getting done you can go pick your own pickle from one of their pickle barrels, they usually have sour and garlic to chose from...yum city! Those pickles are crack! There is not much for food options nearby and I found the area of Far Rockaway to be depressed economically when it comes to restaurants and bars. The deli itself is very cute and clean. CASH ONLY, but they did have an ATM (though it wasn't in service yesterday). There are a multitude of prepared deli salads, sandwich options, and they do breakfast and bake their own bread. Deli manager or owner was very welcoming when we arrived, they expeditiously took our order after making some suggestions. A little snafu when we ended up waiting about 10-15 minutes for our deli sandwiches and watched those who walked in and ordered after us receive their food and leave. The Deli Manager (owner?) was extremely apologetic and offered to comp our lunch and added some drinks to make up for the inconvenience. His decision to do so completely changed my outlook on the place, so well done. The food itself wasn't bad, but it wasn't spectacular, either. I liked that they used Boar's Head meats and cheeses. The bread was a decent sub roll, nothing to complain or write home about. I was a little disappointed they forgot the lettuce on both sandwiches we ordered (maybe they ran out and didn't mention it?), but all in all, it was a decent sandwich and I ate it all.
