Wow!! This was a 5 star experience from beginning to end! We were greeted by the host, who was also the owner! Made such a warm and welcoming initial greet. He sat us without a reservation on Wednesday night. Beautiful atmosphere! Live and soothing music, perfect volume for the small venue. I would recommend this place for a date night. Lighting was perfect, which is so important when enjoying a nice dinner out. Food- OMG!!!!! I was informed that all seafood is caught and shipped DAILY to the restaurant - which REALLY makes such a huge difference , especially for the raw bar. BEST oysters, seriously so fresh and great selection to choose from. I will be back for oysters. The tuna was absolutely delicious. We ordered the tuna rare, and literally melted in your mouth. YUM!!! The scallops- locally caught, great flavor, and paired well with the asparagus and bacon. With the bill came 2 delicious lemon cookies- great touch. This place is worth every penny! This was my third visit to 100 Steps, each about 2 years apart. The first was in 2015 for a New Jersey oyster festival, where I first tried the Cape May Salt Oyster from Delaware Bay. My 2017 visit and my visit last week were for dinner during happy hour, when oysters on the half shell are half price. Many of the pictures posted here don't show how much seafood is served at 100 Steps Kitchen + Raw Bar, perfect for a pescatarian like me. The hot Parker Rolls are addictive. I started with a dozen New Jersey Oysters ($20.50), and my entree was a pan-seared skate wing with grilled asparagus ($33), a substitute I requested from the listed side dish, potato dumplings in a cream sauce. My wife had three large Sea Scallops from New Jersey ($37), and they came with a few small potatoes. Portions are modest in this fine-dining BYO restaurant, but the food is well-prepared and delicious. My one regret was not ordering the special salad of the day, Jersey Peach with Arugula. The service was slower than I remember, even though there were only a few other tables occupied when we walked in without a reservation. I'm looking forward to returning with a bottle of chilled white wine, and exploring the raw bar menu even more. read more

Let me start by saying OHS was our go to places . Tbh we haven't been for a while but decided it was time to go back.We were a party of six out for a friend's birthday. The food was good. We ordered raw bar,appetizers,entree's,desserts,coffee and cappuccinos. When we were finishing dessert we were told without warning that we had to leave as there were people waiting,?? At no time when we were there or when we made reservations did anyone mention time limits. Our waitress was great we recognized her as she was at Marino's in Cranford for many years, she was polite and told us they needed the table. I understand that restaurants need to turn over the tables. However, we should've been warned about this when we made the reservation or when we arrived at the restaurant the manager should have told us and not the waitress.! As we all know, this is not a cheap restaurant, and that kind of service unacceptable! Needless to say, we will not be back ! read more

I finally had the chance to make it out to 100 Steps Raw Bar and the experience was all around on point! The restaurant was beautifully decorated in modern tones and with the open kitchen set up, you are treated to quite the show. The raw bar is at the head of the restaurant and you can go take photos of the masterful shucking of the shellfish. We arrived right around the cut off for happy hour which is 4 to 530pm daily. All oysters and clams were 50% then We ordered two of the Double Oyster samplers to try all of the options and let me tell you that we were blown away! The oysters were all so cleanly prepared, visually stunning and ultra flavorful! The West Coast options were clearly the stars! We also tried the salmon and beef carpaccio appetizers which were excellent as well. Jennifer our server was wonderful providing great recommendations and speedy service throughout our meal. Overall we had a great time at this restaurant and we certainly will be back for more oysters and samplings of some more of their menu options! read more

I moved down the shore 2 years ago, from Cranford. For our anniversary, my wife wanted to go back to 100 steps. Well, how smart is she? What a great meal. Selected our oysters from the sheet, with provided pencil, ordered dinner, scallops and Monkfish. Finished off with homemade choc/butter pecan and espresso. Simply fantastic! Was a huge fan of ATH and OHS has been on my "to try" list for a while now. Wow! Can't wait to go back! Every dish was tastier than the one before: the BEST cream of asparagus soup I have every tasted, chicken croquettes to die for, amazing stuffed shrimp, and a lamb pappardelle that was out of this world! We probably walked close to 200 steps to make it to the entrance of 100 Steps due to the street parking situation, but it was well worth the walk! 100 Steps had a very neighborhood "local" feel but it's not one of those places that makes you feel like an outsider if you're not from the immediate area. Reservations are a must and it was super busy at 7:00 PM on a Saturday. Our party of 4 was warmly greeted and swiftly seated. Oysters are where it's at here. My friend's husband and I split a dozen oysters of varying origins, flavors, and textures. I could have eaten 50 of them and called it a night. If you've never tried oysters, then this is the place to do it. Be brave! 100 Steps is really geared toward a more small-plate and sharable experience. We sampled the Ceviche, the Octopus Tostada, the Kale Salad, the Mushroom Pasta, and the Meatballs. The only meatballs I have ever given props to are my Mom's, but it's no joke when I say that these were a close second. And the red gravy was divine! It's BYOB, so bring a bottle (or two) of your favorite wine. And the owner (Jim) will surely stop by your table to give you a heartfelt "hello". Such a nice touch. Fabulous dining experience at 100 Steps with the husband. We ordered two dozen oysters during happy hour. The east coast oysters were our favorite. Buttery and delicious. We ordered the grilled octopus to share. It was perfectly cooked and the gochujang sauce was perfect. For our main course, I ordered the catch of the day which was the crispy pan seared salmon with miso butter sauce. Yum! Every bite melted in my mouth. He ordered the mussels in garlic cream sauce with chorizo and fries. Been here about 8 times. Love the happy hour 1/2 price raw bar. There is a significant selection of east coast & west coast oysters and they are top notch. Please give this restaurant especially the manager a lesson in hospitality and customer service 101. The service and time management needs major improvement. Service was very slow and the manager brushed me off and was unwilling to hear what I wanted to say. I spent close to $400 this restaurant to be treated poorly. They were understaffed and did not have the time to pay attention to their tables to know when to fire up the entees. I will never return to this restaurant. I observed other tables and they were waiting too. One family left except for the husband to get the check. Everything about our experience at 100 Steps was amazing. The food was delicious. We started with the East Coast Oysters, cerviche and an arugula salad. For mains we had the scallops, soft shell crab special and the hanger steak special. For deserts we enjoyed a sampling of homemade ice cream. My only complaint is that they don't offer additional veggie sides. Everything was so good but I can't give 5 stars since there just aren't enough vegetables being offered. Rarely do I ever give 5stars but this place definitely deserved it. We were greeted by two hostess that were super friendly. We were a little early for our reservations but were seated right away. We had a early reservations so they were too busy yet . Our hostess sat us down and immediately asked if we wanted tap or sparkling water. Within a few minutes the owner came over and went over menu items with us and the specials for the night. He was very and asked if we were revisiting or our first time. He welcomed us and asked also if we were celebrating any special occasion which we said it was for my birthday. He wished me happy birthday and told us to enjoy our meal. Now on to the food we ordered a bunch of appetizers so we could try a few things. We started off with Kumamoto oysters and little neck clams along with ceviche. Which was so fresh and smooth going down . Next we go the arugula salad which I definitely recommend you try it was so full of flavor and each bite had a different taste whether it was the beets or the apples . Next they brought over the clam chowder which was nice and creamy with chunks of clam and bacon it had a slight bite to it which I loved. Then came the octopus crostini which was perfectly cooked nice and tender and full of flavor as well. They brought us their home made Parker rolls which are a must try melt in your mouth goodness. We then got crab hush puppies which were full of flavor and had a nice sauce along with it. Now we saved the best for last. We had a pot of Curry muscles which OMG the sauce was beyond amazing I could have just put the pot up to my mouth and drank the juice from the pot. Favorite Raw Bar of all-time. Great happy hour prices on all their oysters. Plus it's BYO so you can have a great meal and a great drink without breaking the bank. The entrees and desserts incredible. I had ricotta gnocchi that blew my mind it was so tasty. Afterwards, had a deconstructed smores dessert . They literally SMOKED vanilla ice cream to give it an authentic campfire flavor. One of my favorite things to do is sit at the bar seats so you can view the chat with the staff in the kitchen and oyster bar while they prepare the food. 100 Steps is the sister restaurant to A Toute Heure (ATH) located conveniently across the street or 100 steps away to be exact. 100 Steps is a raw bar concept and the bar area and views into the kitchen give the restaurant more of an urban ambiance versus the cozy and homey style of ATH. I visited 100 Steps in October of 2015 with a party of 4. I had tried and loved ATH and wanted to try 100 Steps. There were a few weekend reservation openings for 100 Steps but booking in advance is still recommended. To start we ordered from the raw bar. The raw bar menu is separate from the regular menu. You can order single oysters or clams at market price. The variety of mollusks included oysters from New Jersey to Washington state. The main menu is small plates style. They were ok with us choosing a few items to begin and ordering more as we feasted! We started with the fall salad which has roasted squash, blue cheese, and serrano ham over a bed of arugula with smoked almonds. The fall salad was enough to split across two people. Next we enjoyed the seared scallop and crispy calamari which came with a sweet pear pure that went nicely with the toping of arugula and balsamic vinegar. Then came the OHS meatballs. These savory meatballs were made of beef and chorizo and were enough to split across 4 people and were a stand out of the meal. The couple we were with ordered the lobster crostini. Even though I just got a taste, this small plate was a highlight too. The large lumps of lobster meat were on a small piece with a delicious broth. After we enjoyed the small plates we decided we were still hungry and could go for a larger appetizer for each couple to split. My girlfriend and I ordered the spaccatelli which came with a tender shredded duck ragu. One of my favorite things about ATH and 100 Steps is that when I visit I know I could order an "adventurous" dish and really enjoy it. Another thing to point out is the broths in all of the dishes at 100 Steps and ATH. From the mussel pots to the pasta dishes the broth will have you licking your bowl clean! read more

I was super close to giving this place 5 stars...but felt it was closer to 4-4.5 stars. Honestly, this place is great. We came here for Mother's Day dinner with the fam and the experience was excellent! First of all, the owner came to our table to walk us through the menu, which I thought was a really nice touch. He did that with each table that came in. I've never really seen that before. He also took my niece and nephew back to the kitchen to show them around, which I thought was really cute. Great service! The idea is that there are lots of small plates that you can have and share with the table and then there are a handful of pastas or entrees if you are still hungry for more food. We ordered WAY more than we needed, but we got to try a lot. We started with oysters and the ceviche trio. The oysters were delicious. Some of the best I've had in a long time...super fresh. The ceviche trio was tuna, salmon and scallop. I didn't try the scallop but everyone said it was delicious. The salmon was really tasty with a nice kick of heat at the end and the tuna was okay. We also got meatballs for the kids (which I tried and were deliciously moist and tasty), the grilled octopus (which was cooked perfectly, although it was too vinegary for my taste), the clam chowder (DELISH and I don't even like clam chowder!) and the fried onion straws (which were a lighter, hopefully healthier version of a bloomin' onion:). I decided on the branzino for dinner, which was really tasty although at times difficult to navigate through the bones. It was light and fresh and perfectly citrusy. I didn't try all of the entrees, but the hubs got a pasta dish with bacon that he said was pretty good and my sister got the chicken thigh dish which was SO GOOD. I would eat that every day for the rest of my life and be happy. It was in a creamy mushroom sauce and it was so so good. Desserts were tasty too, peanut butter chocolate chip cookies were soft and chewy and hot and the chocolate cake was really rich, but very good. It's a bit pricey, though, so keep that in mind! Sadly, it's not as good as it used to be. While the raw bar and happy hour is the same quality carryover, I didn't find the hot dishes to be as taste forward as they were before. By that I mean the elements of each dish used to be more simple and straightforward and the execution was what put it this place on top of the local dining scene. Now I found every dish to have a sweet and savory component, with a more diverse composition. The flavors were more bold than delicious. For example, the shrimp dish (which was a sad replacement for one of the best shrimp dishes ever) tasted like they had just made a condensed stock of dried shrimp. Just too shrimpy. Service was lovely though. I think either the owner or manager came by to check on us but he didn't seem as warm as the last owners. May be I'm projecting with that one. read more

When you walk into this restaurant you feel like your on vacation , the perfect date night restaurant . Great music and atmosphere , The Oysters my Husband had to start were fantastic . We then both enjoyed sharing the Crispy Monk Fish Appetizer , with amazing sauce to dip it in . I then had the Perch Fish with Bok Choy and a Mustard Vinaigrette sauce with just a tiny bit of kick to it ,i have to say i loved it ! . ,My Husband had the Sea Scallops with Brussels Sprouts which he loved ( and believe me this guy hates Brussels Sprouts normally ) what a great date night and to top it off our Server Chloe , was so knowledgeable about the food and so sweet . We usually go for the oyster "happy hour" which is 4:30-6:30 at the bar. Its a byob restaurant do the perfect way to unwind after work with a great wine and 1/2 price oysters! The selection always varies but they usually have a few standards that are always so good. The island creek oysters are our favorite. The menu changes seasonally so the last time we were there we did get the house cured salmon and the fried pickles (both pictured). Pickles were really good but the salmon is to die for! B.y.o.b so make sure to plan ahead although there is usually a liquor store that will deliver. Extensive raw bar offerings and smaller menu to choose from. Most dishes were prepared deliciously. Arctic char was cooked to perfection with crispy skin. Lentils and puree that accompanied as well. Interesting spin on the Gnochni as well to fit the season. Dessert was surprisingly good. I'd had a great meal here before, but I was sorely disappointed with my experience tonight. We chose their later seating at 9:30, happy to have be able to come out after evening work obligations. I was looking forward to this meal based on our last experience. We were greeting nicely upon arrival. Our server, although polite looked like he was sixteen. We ordered oysters and then four additional items, two from the fishmonger menu ( prawns, lobster toast) and one from the butcher (agnolotti), and two sides (asparagus and two Parker house rolls). Our server asked if we were ordering entrees. Nothing on the menu was marked specifically as such and we asked if we were underestimating plating. He demurred and we stated we'd order more if needed. The toast and asparagus came first. A few minutes after the prawns and agnolotti came, we asked for spoons for the broth in which the prawn was served. While delicious, this enjoyment was ruined by the manner in which they were thrust upon us by someone other than our server. She was a woman with glasses who literally sneered at us, "SPOOOONS?" We were made to feel as if our request was burdensome or extraneous when honestly the dish would have been better served with a companion item that absorbed and showcased those flavors. When inquiring about the Parker House Rolls we ordered (which never materialized) and asking if we could order an additional item in conjunction, we were told the kitchen was closed. It was apparent that our young and clearly inexperienced server forgot to put the rolls order in. He also failed to warn us the kitchen was closing shortly, especially after we left the door open to further selections, closed the door on more food. Overall, honestly an hour after our reservation time it was unexpected to be told the kitchen was already closed. Our server somehow conjured rolls and they were the last thing we enjoyed. Determined to salvage the timing, we asked to open the red wine we brought to pair with the warm buttery roll, which was in fact wonderful. What was not inspiring was the stomping and muttering we heard from the same 'spoons' server sotto voce was not a fan of anyone opening wine this 'late' in the seating. That pretty much ruined our game attempt to end on a high note and foreclosed any desire to return in the future. On coming home and checking reviews we learned the business was being operated by those other than at our first experience. That made sense, the difference was clear. Right before I moved to California, I was really craving oysters for some reason. Tried this place out... wasn't disappointed at all. Really cool oyster bar with a chef curated menu. They have about 8-10 varieties of oysters, primarily east coast varieties with a few west coast ones. Oysters were super fresh, clean and delicious. More importantly, the server seemed to be knowledgeable about the varieties e.t.c which I feel is very important. Reasonably priced, although if you are in the mood to eat a lot of oysters, the bill goes up quickly. I tried the mussel pot with the chorizo. Delicious, just a lil over salted especially with the bread, but the sauce was thick enough to get good flavor, but light enough to eat with a spoon. Mussels were all nicely cooked. I love choirizo in general but thought that the chorizo with the mussels was an interesting combo, but one I liked a lot. The only major downside is they don't serve alcohol but it is a BYOB establishment which means you can bring in your favorite wine bottle to pair with the oysters for far cheaper than ordering inside. As far as the ambience and the service, top notch! Overall, great classy oyster bar with some good food.. definitely recommend if you are in mood for oysters in this part of town. read more

My husband and I finally had a chance to go out without the kiddies tonight. This place is located off the main downtown area in Cranford. They have parking spots reserved for the restaurant, street parking and municipal parking. It has a dim atmosphere that makes the place feel romantic. It's been a while since we've been able to eat at a classy restaurant. We perused the menu online ahead of time so we knew exactly what to order when we got there. We were so excited to order the Kumamoto and the Moonstone oysters. We got the menus at the restaurant including a separate paper menu for the oysters but NO Kumamoto and Moonstone. :( We asked the server about it since we saw them online. She said she was going to check. But she explained to us that during happy hour they offer 1/2 price oysters so the customers go to town on them like crazy. By the time the dinner customers arrive they're gone! We're there to pay full price for the good stuff, but we settled for Malabars and good old Bluepoints. Ahh I sound like an oyster snob, but if we're going to pay for it, I would want the good stuff. Anyway, she said we can call ahead next time so that they can make sure they hold them aside for us. When there's a next time, I'll probably just take advantage of the happy hour instead. The appetizers that we ordered were at least unique combinations. We ordered the duck liver mouse and pork belly. The duck was smooth and delectable. The pomegranate complemented it well. The pork belly was a bit too fatty, almost greasy, some parts were crunchy. The hazelnuts and apple didn't do too much to cut the fattiness, but they were a nice addition. Presentation was nice. For entrees we ordered the NJ Sea Scallops and Veal. The scallops (3 for $19 or 5 for $35) were cooked to perfection along with the cauliflower and the cauliflower and golden raisin purées. The pickled grape was a nice touch as well. The veal was very tender and well seasoned. The portion itself with the Swiss chard filled the whole plate. The cipollini onions worked well with the dish. Finally, we tried the chocolate cake with cranberry dessert with cranberry compote and cranberry ice cream. We couldn't really taste the cranberry from the ice cream, but the compote was really tasty. Overall, the culinary experience was satisfactory considering the menu may have been limited to the off season. After looking at some of the other yelpers' pictures that seemed to have more interesting dishes, I'd want to visit during the summer when a lot of other ingredients are in season. But for now, maybe just come back for happy hour. read more

I'm going to redo my review of this restaurant because there are new owners now. I previously rated this restaurant 4 stars, but under the new ownership this place deserves 5 stars! It's absolutely amazing! I've been coming in on a weekly basis now since I enjoy the food so much. The last owner I thought the food was very good, but I felt the entree portions were too small. Now that's not the case the entrees are all a generous portion and so are the appetizers. The dishes they have are so innovative and perfectly prepared. The fish specials change frequently and each dish is better than the next. My favorite appetizer is the octopus tostada it's outrageous! I order it week after week. Another top appetizer are the crab beignets, and also they make one of the best Hand cut steak fries that are perfectly seasoned. For desserts I like the banana pudding, chocolate peanut butter ice cream, and this blueberry dessert I had. Only one dessert I didn't care for it was some sort of mousse cake. Everything else has been delicious! I'm so impressed with everything under the new ownership, and I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone. read more

I was so excited to come here and eat from all the reviews and picture. We came for the happy hour from 4-7. We ordered the oyster sampler which consisted of 16 oysters ranging from west to east coast. The oysters were absolutely delicious and we loved that we had the description of each one. We also ordered the pork belly app and octupus carpiaccio, both average tasting for the price we paid. Our second favorite was the summer clam pot.
