Hiding on a sleepy street sandwiched between Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Odéon and Luxembourg Gardens is one of the best traditional dive bars in Pars. It's easy to walk right past Bar 10 towards the glitz that is Saint-Germain, or the party that is bar hopping near the Sorbonne (assuming school is in session); to be honest I would have passed by this place without giving it a second look if I hadn't already known to come here, and that would have been a huge mistake.
The exterior of the place is not very well lit, and lacks the awning and outside seating of a more formal Parisian street bar. Screw the awning, and screw the outside tables*, this is not why you should come here. You should head to Bar 10 for the following reasons:
* First and foremost is the ambiance. When I first came to visit my future favorite city in 08' (sorry NYC, were it not for my abysmal grasp of the French language I'd be living in Paris already), it seemed like there were bars like this everywhere. To be fair, this is the first time I visited in August (never again), so maybe the cool spots close when the tourists invade. Either way, the authentic feel of this place cannot be overstated; it full of locals, the old guy tending bar can't speak English (the hand gestures and broken French I can speak were enough; this added to my enjoyment of the place), and it feels old (as any good dive should).
* Secondly, and almost as importantly. The Sangria. Have you ever thought to yourself "gee, I'd like to find a place that I can get obliterated on one carafe of wine"? Mean nether, that would be absurd (cough), but is exactly what happened the first time I came to this joint. The Sangria is homemade, delicious, served in a variety of sizes, and strong. Really, properly strong. This cannot be overstated enough; If you are a light weight, get the small carafe and split it with a friend (14 euros, 4 glasses, great deal), otherwise you'll be waking up in the Jardin du Luxembourg wondering what happened to you last night (hopefully with both kidneys). If you are feeling brave they have a variety of sizes that lead up to an enormous pitcher for 45 euro. I assume this monster is either for a large party, Hemmingway, or someone who wants to kill themselves in the most decadently delicious way possible
* Last but not least, you need to come here multiple nights to see what's on the jukebox. The thing is loaded with eclectic music, and depending on who's filled the place up the feel of the place can be very different. The first night, the slightly older crowed was blasting Hendrix and the Stones, smoking up a storm and getting belligerently drunk whilst screaming at each other in French. Love it. We came back a few times, and heard some modernish music (France seems to be stuck in the 90's still, very entertaining), and some truly old 50's style French big band music. Seriously, if you like people watching even a little, the inside of Bar 10 is the place to go.
Stop by and order a pitcher (large if you're feeling a bit masochistic), play some music, and soak in a bar scene that seems to be quite hard to find in Paris these days.

*Actually, if you want to sit outside feel free to grab a table a chairs and take them out there - though there is really only room for one or two tables out there, the incredibly relaxed bar tenders never really seemed to care if someone did this. read more
