HNN, or Honolulu News Now as their acronym reads in my mind, has gone downhill since my last…read morereview, especially with news coverage for islands outside of Oahu. While I still like the newscasters and reporters, the main reason for watching the news - information, is lacking. And for sports fans, they still don't have a dedicated sports team, so even less stories are reported. At times even Oahu stories go unreported or are days old news. One example was the closing of iconic diner, Like Like Drive Inn. Three or four days after the story broke on KITV news did they even announce it. News is news no matter how petty. But, what prompted this review update was for their recent coverage on Hurricane Douglas on Maui (7.26.20). I wasn't watching HNN but a family member was on another TV in our house. At around 2:00pm as the hurricane was way past Maui and nearing Oahu, according to another more accurate news organization, HNN kept reporting that "Maui braces for hurricane" and "Maui residents urged to take shelter". They even had an inaccurate radar map showing red radar images (heavy rain) of a humongous storm enveloping all of Maui county when in fact there was barely a drizzle at the time. Yes, it's better to be safe than sorry but faulty information is just sad. Said family member was totally confused as the reporting and actual weather didn't sync. I finally turned the channel to KHON and did her a big favor, lol. OVERALL: I have since changed my viewing habits with KITV at 6pm (only one-hour newscast in the state) and KHON at 10pm. I still watch HNN every now and then but only in the mornings as their Sunrise crew does a good job at recapping headlines.

Although I don't watch much television, I know that KIKU features Japanese, Filipino, and even some Chinese shows. KIKU has been around for many years and is an independent television station in Hawaii. Located in Downtown Honolulu on Bishop Street, KIKU Television Station has its office in the Pacific Guardian Center on the 14th floor of the Mauka Tower. I parked in a metered parking stall on Merchant Street, about 2 blocks away. When I opened the door, the receptionist asked me, "Are you a winner?" Haha! After completing a waiver form, she handed me an envelope with a gift card from JQ (Japan Quality) Store. I was so happy! They took a picture and I was on my way to shop! This is a great service for local businesses! This Instagram contest, sponsored by KIKU, helps to advertise small businesses and bring more awareness to customers! Mahalo!

Other than "s'koshi," a WWII import by occupation GIs like my tāmā, I knew almost no Japanese language. But I knew I wanted to be stationed there. So I'd go to okazuyas like the one on South King with pictures of osumo rikishi Takamiyama, Jesse Kuhalua, who resembled la'u tāmā 'afakasi. At home, I would watch Samurai Kinsan and other dramas on KIKU. Ryōtarō Sugi, what a hunk! And another period piece, Oshin, I believe, about palace intrigue. Falsely accused of treachery by a rival, Oshin flees. When she is caught, she commits seppuku in the way of male samurai, choosing hara kiri rather than a short sword to her throat. Much to his horror, her head is delivered to the weakling lover who believed his lying wife (?) and ordered Oshin's execution. Would love to see those shows again. Bring it all back. I practiced the station's signature "Kochira wa Honoruru desu, ju-san chaneru, K-I-K-U, KIKU, nihongo terebi desu." Translation: This is Honolul Channel 13, KIKU, Japanese language television. Memories! I did get stationed in the Kanto Plain from 1980 to 1983, living in Yokohama-shi, Asahi-ku, Shirane-cho. Taking Japanese 101 & 102 at UH helped takusan, mochiron. Good times! Thank goodness KIKU is back to normal.

I am truly torn as I write this review. KITV 4; now known as Island News is my station to watch in…read morethe morning and evening. The GOOD, The BAD and THE UnNews!.... 1) Good newscasters but limited on what news they cover. Their morning news makes up 2 early hours from 5 am to 7 am. Sadly, after the first 40 minutes, the news repeats itself. 2) They feature YELP on Tuesdays and Sundays; giving our CM a chance to feature places and people popular with reviews and visits. 3) Weather and traffic reports become repetitious after the first hour; and sometimes (maybe many times) the cameras are on the blink. 4) My favorite is the sports because their sports reporter Brandi Higa is the greatest. She reports with passion and desire; making me (a non sports person) enjoy sports! So go figure The upshot is they try hard and their newscasters are pleasant and informative. The downside is they, as I mentioned in #'s 1 and 3 do exude a lackluster presentation. I do watch them as a matter of habit and I hope one day, their producers will take a better look at their news reporting. I'm cheering and rooting for you Island News 4! Heard thru the…read morecoconut wireless that one of the TSA lines was shut down so it was recommended to get to the airport early. Arrived early and was standing in line which went all the way to Southwest Airlines counter area , with nothing to do I observed a KITV vehicle driving by. A few minutes later reporter Jeremy Lee is taking video of the long line and asking people if they wanted to be interviewed. I believe KITV was the first station doing the story and highlighting the problems with the broken TSA equipment at Hilo airport. Hopefully the news coverage will put pressure on TSA and airport personnel to resolve this issue.

I recently came here for an educator workshop. I never been to this location so it was kind of cool…read moreto be inside. They're located off of Sand Island Access Road. I almost missed it because it right on the corner. I would have probably missed it if I didn't see a sign and staff out there waving us in. First of all, I'd like to say that PBS Hawaii does an awesome job exciting young minds to create videos. They run a great program called Hiki No which are student produced video stories. I'm really into learning and trying to teach my students how to do that. I have been trying for years but PBS Hawaii's program is wonderful. In the past I've just had to learn on my own. I'm not a professional videographer or even photographer so I don't really know what I'm doing. With Hiki No, they provide mentors to students to help them with their projects. This will be my first year participating in this with my school but we are excited. I'm excited for my students and also myself. I'm glad that I can take part in this process. Anyways, I was at PBS Hawaii because they had several breakout sessions during the day to teach us more about the video process. It was great. They had actual industry professionals giving teachers advice of how to start and what kind of shots would be best. For me, it was the first time that I really felt like I could do this. I'm excited for my students that they get expert help this year. Everyone at PBS Hawaii is wonderful. They're excited to learn about future projects and willing to work with new students.

The brand new multi-million dollar broadcasting facility on the corner of Sand Island Access Road and Nimitz is a HUGE improvement from their previous facility at UH Manoa, and I'll bet this would not have been possible had it still been under the ownership/management of the state. This new facility enables PBS Hawaii to produce a lot of great local programming including HIKI NO, which are stories on topics of local interest, made and produced by Hawaii's own middle and high schoolers from public and private schools! In addition to the quality programming that PBS Hawaii airs on TV, it also hosts exclusive events for Keiki Club members, such as this past weekend's halloween costume party which was held at their brand new studio. As keiki club members, we got a little peak at their new facility and also got a photo op with Daniel Tiger! The host, Guy Hagi, is excellent. The problem is with Augie T. He makes jokes on the restaurant and food - basically, using airtime to showcase his "comedy act." It's hard to imagine how anyone watching would seriously believe how great the restaurant and food is, When Augie T was unavailable and replaced with another co-host, the segment improved and became much enjoyable. Please consider replacing Augie T or just have Mr Hagi do the segments himself! Food is not meant to be funny but enjoyed for it's taste. This is no joke.
