After a few well spent hours in the Volcano National Park we stopped by at the Ohelo Cafe to grab a quick snack/bite before our 2 hour ride back to our resort. Took a bit for them to seat us and then grab our order. We ended up ordering the Margherita pizza and it showed up about 20 minutes or so later.Tasted decent to good and did its job of taking care of our hunger. Stop by and promote a local business if you can!!

New to the area and looking forward a spot to grab a good meal we lucked out and got this beautiful dinner on Thanksgiving! Service was awesome. Food was so delicious. Highly recommend this place.

After touring the Volcanos we were starving... I had the Hamachi Kama which was a starter but worth it... fresh fish? Oh my! The hubby had the O'Helo's Bacon Cheeseburger and it was loaded with bacon and the side of roasted Yukon gold potatoes were spiced just right! Highly recommend!

We went without a reservation at 5pm since we wanted to see the lava glow. Thank goodness the host/waiter/bartender/busser could accommodate us. Only one guy running the front, 2 people in kitchen area. So you definitely need to practice PATIENCE. Make a reservation! Pros: -location if you coming to/from volcano national park - outdoor seating -delicious food -accepts cash/credit card - take out available Cons: -slow service so if you super hungry, keep driving! - short staffed so be patient

Cool place that has a townie feel but welcomed me like a regular. The server was everyone's best friend. She recommended where to find the cheapest gas, based on $5 a gallon I listened in. I had the ribs, not sure what I was getting but the ribs were moist and tender. It was a driving rainstorm and she checked which way you were going and advised if flooding was possible. Kinda like a good friend she genuinely cared about her customers.

A great spot near the volcano for a meal. The woodfire pizza was a standout, but the burgers were good too. We really enjoyed the cozy vibe after a day walking through the park. Highly recommended.

Stayed in Volcano for a couple of nights and went to dinner here. Be mindful this place requires masks and showing of vaccinations cards. Great local spot we had the pizza and the salad with Tuscan wine. Loved it. Enjoy!

What a find! Very friendly staff, good food, and nice prices! Patty and I enjoyed the white pizza and a few brews for lunch. Great way to get ready for Volcanoes National Park!

    Fresh tomato pasta

I tried the fresh tomato pasta and enjoyed it. I think the consensus for the group I came with was that pastas were the standout items of the ones we tried. The restaurant did seem understaffed but I can't hold that against them.

Ōhelo Cafe is a Volano café that more than deserves its five stars. I had been under the impression that it was a vegetarian / vegan restaurant and boy was I wrong. My cousin has been visiting and we didn't wanna really drive back into town and so she suggested Ōhelo. I was hesitant because of what I had heard, but I knew I could find something on the menu. Well, it does serve all kinds of food. My cousin had the most delicious Bacon Guava Burger, and I had the margarita pizza with mildly spicy Italian sausage. Both items were really really delicious especially the pizza. I'm very happy to know that there is a place close to me or I can get some inventive food that tastes great. The Good: Fairly priced delicious food in the neighborhood The Bad: you can't order burgers at dinner time. And parking can be limited unless you park in the unpaved lot next-door. Chances I'll Be Back: YES! another option in Volcano. Delicious food can't wait to try more out on the menu.

Aloha, Ohelo Cafe in Volcano Village is a fabulous farm to table restaurant. The ribs (fall-off-the-bone with rich guava BBQ sauce) are a must as well as the wood-burning stove pizzas, wowza! Everything is really good, we have worked our way through the menu and are revisiting our favs! The fresh veggies and salads are amazing. From the flowers on the table, to the great local service, it's by far my favorite restaurant in Volcano. Reservations a must, be patient they are busy!

As this is the lounge, the food choices aren't fancy, but interestingly, the food is prepared in the same kitchen as the more upscale The Rim restaurant next to it. Had two great dinners at the Rim and tried Georges in between. Nothing fancy this meal, but the draft beers were cold filled to the rim, and the gluten free cauliflower pizza was nicely topped with plenty of fixings and cheese. A great meal with a window seat to the volcano offgassing.

This time, I ordered the fish and chips, and I can't stress enough how awful they were. I bit into the first one and had to spit it out - I couldn't even bite through it because it was so dry and tough. Like jerky. Several tiny pieces of curled-up "fish" were presented on top of a small plastic bowl heaped with extremely mediocre fries. I have never sent anything back in my life, but I couldn't eat this. We were about to go on a hike and I was hungry. I sent it back and instead ordered the somen salad, which was satisfying. The service was great and the fish and chips were removed from the bill. I would eat here again for the location and beer, but I'd only go with a pizza or salad. Reading the reviews now, I should never have ordered the fish and chips to begin with. They sounded so good, but they were so very bad.

My wife and I stopped by for pre-dinner drinks and we absolutely loved the drinks that we were able to try out. I started out with a cocktail called the "Spam Dram", a crispy Spam fat-washed barrel-proof bourbon, combined with seared Spam and nori syrup and topped off with a spam musubi garnish. As one might guess, this drink was presented in a spam musubi tin, and atop the bed of crushed ice was an *entire* spam musubi. The drink was a perfect representation of spam musubi in a glass -- sweet, savory, and full of umami. Props to whichever bartender put together this creative drink. The next drink I ordered was the "Smoky Bear", another bourbon based cocktail. This one had bird's eye chili essence in it, and was much closer than your traditional Old Fashioned, except it had an incredible amount of smokiness and a punch of heat to it as well. If you enjoy stiff drinks with complexity, look no further than this cocktail. While we were seated at the bar, we overheard somebody close to us mentioning a password special that had been posted on the Instagram page of The Hidden Nene. We checked their latest story posted two hours earlier and the password special for the day was a "fizz me baby one more time", a strawberry and yuzu gin fizz. My wife ordered this cocktail as her second drink and loved how refreshing the drink tasted. Overall, if you consider yourself a cocktail connoisseur, you owe it to yourself to check out The Hidden Nene if you're in Hilo.

A solid neighborhood spot with a few standouts and some room to grow…read more We've been to Kaleo's a few times now, and we'll definitely keep coming back. It's close, there's always parking, and it's got that laid-back, local energy where you can laugh loud and no one's going to shoot you a look. It does get loud inside, but in that kind of way that makes it feel like everybody's having a good time, not like you're in a cafeteria. Just don't expect a quiet dinner conversation, unless you're reading lips. The service? Always sweet, always kind. Lily (I think that's the correct spelling!) has taken care of us more than once and she's a gem... warm, attentive, and easy to chat with. She's the kind of person who remembers what you ordered last time and tells you honestly what's good. As for the food... Bacon Blue Burger: My husband had this last time and it was yum. Juicy, flavorful, hits all the right rich notes without being greasy. That one's a solid order. Ribs: The barbecue sauce was really good... but the ribs themselves were dry and overdone. Not terrible, but not what I'd call a win either. If they could just dial in the texture, that sauce would carry it home. Kalbi Short Ribs: Best thing on the menu so far. Tender, rich, and full of flavor. Get those. Mashed Potatoes: "All mash" is the move. They're creamy and comforting... total comfort food. Hamburger Steak: Another standout. Probably one of the best in the area. Classic done right. Thai Chicken Pasta: Watch out... it's got some serious heat! Spicy, but good. Not for the faint of tongue, but worth it if you're into that kind of kick. Lilikoi Fizz: Really tasty but heavy on the lilikoi. If they eased up and added a little more club soda, it would be more balanced. Desserts: * Lava Cake was good... warm and classic. * Chocolate Decadent Cake was just okay. It comes fridge-cold (probably so it doesn't melt), but I feel like if they let it sit out for ten minutes before serving, it would be way better. * Brownie Sundae was yum, according to my husband... and I trust his dessert radar. All in all, Kaleo's is the kind of place you root for. You want them to keep getting better, and they mostly are. The hits are worth coming back for, and even the misses aren't deal-breakers. We'll be back, and we're excited to keep trying more of the menu.
