Kam Wah Cafe is also famous for their freshly baked Pineapple Bun and Butter. Can't start your day without some HK Milk Tea and Iced Ovaltine. My son said it's a good thing the nai cha in the states are not as good because he was starting to develop an addiction. Lol. For those of you who don't know, it's made with Ceylon leaves, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The French toast was so damn delicious but a bit indulgent. I do wish I could taste more of the peanuts. My son loved his bolo bao. We also shared a hot bowl of macaroni soup with Spam and lettuce. Thinking back, I regret not trying the Spicy Satay Beef Instant Noodle. I will have to look for this back in the states. The aunties working here are just the most adorable, very kind and welcoming. One of them took the time to help us navigate the huge menu and recommended a few items. I would come back again and again if I could. I have a mad love for these iconic HK Style Cafes aka Cha Chaan Tengs. These affordable quick-paced restaurants were influenced by the city's 150 years of British rule. It took us 10 minutes to decide on our favorites. We ordered sizzling mixed grill with steak, chicken fillet, pork chop, bacon, and sausage (all for HK$85 or US$11) and sizzling chicken fillet with fried shrimp (HK$78 or US$10). Each came with choices of rice, spaghetti, or vegetables and choices of black pepper sauce, garlic sauce or gravy! We also ordered fish fillet, black fungus, and mixed mushroom with rice in soup (HK$45 or US$5.80)! OMG! First, the sizzling mixed grill had 5 kinds of meat - steak, chicken fillet, pork chop, bacon, and sausage. The serving was good for two people. We didn't know better and put in three orders (for three people). One order was with rice and garlic sauce. The other two orders were with spaghetti and black pepper sauce. All the meat was tender, soft, and tasty! In the end, we took almost half of the dishes home. The sizzling chicken fillet with fried shrimp was prepared excellently! The fish fillet, black fungus, and mixed mushroom came in a bowl. It was surprisingly good with no fishy smell! The servers were very attentive, friendly, and polite. I highly recommend this little cafe with big dishes! Definitely, we shall return and try other items on the main menu! BTW: be sure to grab some pineapple buns on your way home! The pretense is non-existent and locals (including myself!) seem to love it here. So like many noodle spots in HK, this place is fairly small. No big tables for 5+ but quite a few small'ish round tables that are good for solo eats or the invaluable food companion. The aroma coming from the semi-open kitchen should be enough inspiration for folks to know what they want upon arrival, but just in case they have the menus outlined along the wall. An easy way to start? Try a wonton and beef brisket with your choice of noodles. The wontons are somewhat pillowy in texture and full of flavor while the beef brisket is braised well while maintaining a perfectly chewy bite. The noodle variety is good, with egg / rice noodles winning over the crowd though I feel the e-fu noodles take the cake. Lastly, do not sleep on the beef tendon. It's practically butter when done right. Chui Hing does fancy itself as a HK style cafe, so other dishes like congee, fried fish skin, fried rice, may appear on the menu, focus on what to stack in your bowl instead. The wontons are ok, beef balls are good, noodles are good, soup okay. The milk tea wasn't very strong but has a nice authentic back flavor. Everything was ready in under 5 minutes. There's nothing around here so you will definitely feel like you are out of the city. The staff fire up the grill for you and you just tell them what kinds of Cantonese BBQ meat you need and they will bring it out for you, and the best of all its all you can eat. The variety is not broad but they have the most common Cantonese BBQ meats. The place is clean and it was very nice place to relax and chill out on a Saturday evening. They have even Mah Jong table if you are keen to play a few rounds. Table reservation is recommended. Its not easy to get here and I don't think many people knows this place. Best way is by taxi and if not take bus 14 from Chai Wan MTR and get off after you pass Tai Tam Tuk reservoir dam its the bus stop on the first junction.
