On a painful knee, I hobbled at least 1 km, looking for an afternoon snack of Old Wife's Cake 老婆饼, Egg Tart and BBQ Puff. Okay, I cheated. That's really 3 snacks.
Kadoorie Bakery on Ferry Street is my usual go-to. It's a bit on the pricey side but quality seems good (for my morning Pineapple Bun). They were sold out of the Old Wife's so I began my painful reconnaissance of nearby bakeries. Yelp lists a large selection of bakeries around Jordan Road. I stopped at 2-3 but did not like the size of the Old Wife's or the BBQ Puff. All were pretty big. In the world of HK pastry, big = lots of excess dough. I prefer cheaper, smaller and a higher filling/dough ratio.
Finally, I ended up at Bakery King. It's a chain with 4 branches in North Point, Jordan Road, Shanghai Street and Hung Hom. Got my 3 items and hobbled back to the apt. The price and quality were worth the walk. Egg tart was warm, flaky and not too sweet. The other 2 were pretty good. read more
