The announcements also tell beach patrons when the lifeguards are leaving for the evenings. The beach is wide open and has plenty of space. The walk down from the parking lot is about 5 minutes, walking back up is a trek but it's not horrible. We took a taxi both ways from Hong Kong to the beach. I guess you could have to wait for a taxi, maybe call one if it's not there. For us, there were enough taxis waiting that all of us were able to leave right away. There are bathrooms, vendors with drinks and ice cream along with surf boards rentals and other beach toys.

As my previous review on the Dragon's Back trail, my roomy and I arrived this magnificent beach. Commonly known as Tai Long Wan (大浪灣), it is a bay well-known for windsurfers, which is located in the Southern District of Hong Kong. If you are not a surfer like me, you will still be overwhelmed by the scenery here with clean sands and water. Yes it can be windy at times (that's why there are so many daring surfers) but if you have a blanket with you, you will be fine with the breeze. My roommate and I ended up spending a night here as it was just so breathtaking (and I was too tired to hike my way back to civilization). And what do you expect? We actually saw lots of STARS in the evening. Who would have thought you could still do that in Hong Kong. Also, there is a declared monument here as well - a rock carving that was believed to pacify the adverse weather during the Bronze Age in ancient China. If you are worried about food and refreshments, there are several cafes and restaurants there but do not expect a filling meal though, I suggest bringing your own food and drinks and definitely spend a night there to really enjoy this secluded place which you thought had all disappeared in Hong Kong.

It's a…read moregood clean beach, only a short stroll from the ferry, across the narrow part of the island, but as such, it can be quite busy at the weekends and on public holidays. The beach itself is longer than the sectioned off area "beach" area, and there is a distinct difference between maintained and non-maintained! In the official beach area, there are boom lines running out to create a protected swimming area, just in case the sharks want their fins back. Inside the protected area, are two pontoons which are great for the kids to play on. They can get a bit rusty and tatty, so do make sure the kids are careful and have an up-to-date tetanus. Facilities at the beach include public showers and toilets, and life guards on duty. The beach within the cordoned area has very fine sand yellow sand, which is lovely to play and relax on, if you can find a spot that is not already covered by another person. Dogs are also not allowed in this area - thank goodness! However, once you get beyond the cordoned area, the sand becomes granular and heavy on the feet, more like small pebbles, which makes me wonder if the sand on the beach is brought in. The "outside" area is also a free for all, so dog owners let their pets mess everywhere, so be very careful where you step. The division between the good and bad sides is just a line in the sand - literally, so you could park yourself just on the bad side of the line where there is more space (and where there are no presents from our canine "friends"), and use the swimming area within the beach cordon. The water is almost completely clear, there are very few people, there's almost no litter and the sand is pretty soft. I'd say the only issue is accessibility. First you need to get to sai kung. Then you need to take a bus or taxi to the pavilion. If you want to take the easy way, there's a nice walk to the first beach, sai wan. The beach is still super clean, there's food, there's a boat that can pick you up. You can walk another 20 minutes to the sai kung rock pools which I highly recommend. The water is so nice and cool. Perfect on a hot day. If you want to get workout in, you can go up and down the mountain to get to the rock stream and the first beach instead of the leisurely walk. From the first beach and rock pools, you can take another short hike to the second beach, Ham Tin. The sand and water is even better here than the first. They have food and boat pickup here. This beach reminded me of Thailand and Hawaii. Highly recommend these beaches if you have the time. Distance: 2.5km Duration: 45 minutes Difficulty: 1 out of 5 Top tip: We suggest to hike from Sai Wan Pavilion to Sai Wan Beach, then hike to the other beaches (Ham Tin Beach, Tai Wan Beach, and Tung Wan Beach) and finally take the speedboat back to Sai Kung from Ham Tin Beach. It's easy to hike from one beach to another as the trails are clearly marked. It's up to you if you want to see all four beaches. Speedboats operate till 5 or 6 PM. Tickets are limited so make sure that you buy your ticket the moment you arrive at the beach from where you'd like to leave!

If there's one place I call paradise in Hong Kong, I'd have to name Ham Tin Wan. Away from the…read morehustle and bustle in the city, Ham Tin Wan is definitely THE most beautiful beach in Hong Kong. Unlike some of the beaches that are packed with tourists, such as the Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay and Stanley Beach, Ham Tin Wan is not accessible by any transportation. You could only get there on a hike. As such, the beach remains free from litter, the sand is very soft and the water is as clear as it can be. Ham Tin Wan is on the MacLehose Trail. Start your hike in the morning at Sai Wan Pavillion, takes about 1.5-2 hours to get to Ham Tin Wan. Enjoy a local meal at a cafe in Ham Tin Wan and set off for the second part of your hike towards Chek King. The entire hike takes about 4 hours or so (excluding lunch and resting time). Go on a sunny day in the winter months (December to March) and you'll be guaranteed the best view in Hong Kong you can ever imagine. It's definitely a delight every time I come back here for a hike every few years!

Travelling up Tai Tam Road and over the resovoire, it's a pretty drive, but the real fun comes from the roller coaster type ride that comes from sitting at the top of a double decker bus traveling at break neck speeds around some very windy mountain roads. Not to mention the "will they lose a wing mirror" game you can play watching cars try and squeeze past each other on the bridge over the dam wall. Technically it's two lanes, but I'd say its more like 1 3/4, and i bet there's many a panel beater or paint retoucher in Hong Kong who owe that bridge a hefty commission. Anyway, back to the beach. It's a pretty narrow stretch of sand, but it's clean and has good amenities (shower, toilet, changing room) with a life guard station and restaurant at the top of the sand. Leave your surf board at home, honestly most of the times I've been there the sea has been about as flat as a board itself. But it is a great beach for young kids as you don't have to worry about them being pounded by a wave. So grab your bucket and spade and head on down. If you do forget anything, dob't stress, Stanley Market is just up the road and you can buy anything you forgot to pack.

The Island is small so you can walk from one side to the other. If you do plan to spend the day then I suggest getting to Yung Shue Wan, Lamma Island: Take a ferry from Central Pier No. 4 to Yung Shue Wan. It takes about 30 minutes. Then leaving from Sok Kwu Wan, Lamma Island: Take a ferry from Sok Kwu Wan to Central or Aberdeen. Stop 1: Yung Shue Wan the main residential area on Lamma Island, with shops, bars, cafes and restaurants. Stop 2: Hung Shing Yeh Beach (Around a 20-minute walk from Yung Shue Wan Pier) white sandy beach, you can enjoy the sun, sand and water. Stop 3: Tin Hau Temple Stop 4: Sok Kwu Wan This tiny village is still very much focused on fishing. The seafood restaurants along the bay are great!

From Pier 4 at Central, there are two ferries to take to/from Lamma Island's two main piers: Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan, with the former being more popular and running more frequently. Most visitors hike the Family Walk, which is a ~4 km long trail (~2 hours slow-paced walking with stopping for breaks and photos), from one pier to the other. The power plant at Yung Shue Wan is an eyesore, but there are a few other lookout spots on Lamma Island that provide stunning views of the fishing villages, beaches, and sparkling waters. I recommend Sai Kung over Lamma Island for a half day trip, but Lamma Island is still a good option for those who prefer mild hiking (ie: not too long or difficult in elevation).
