The announcements also tell beach patrons when the lifeguards are leaving for the evenings. The beach is wide open and has plenty of space. The walk down from the parking lot is about 5 minutes, walking back up is a trek but it's not horrible. We took a taxi both ways from Hong Kong to the beach. I guess you could have to wait for a taxi, maybe call one if it's not there. For us, there were enough taxis waiting that all of us were able to leave right away. There are bathrooms, vendors with drinks and ice cream along with surf boards rentals and other beach toys.

I am not a good swimmer and during summer I spend most of my time in public swimming pool which is naturally packed with visitors, (not a pleasant experience) so I always wanted to look for a secluded place with nice view and I am really glad to say that I found it. As my previous review on the Dragon's Back trail, my roomy and I arrived this magnificent beach. Commonly known as Tai Long Wan (大浪灣), it is a bay well-known for windsurfers, which is located in the Southern District of Hong Kong. If you are not a surfer like me, you will still be overwhelmed by the scenery here with clean sands and water. Yes it can be windy at times (that's why there are so many daring surfers) but if you have a blanket with you, you will be fine with the breeze. My roommate and I ended up spending a night here as it was just so breathtaking (and I was too tired to hike my way back to civilization). And what do you expect? We actually saw lots of STARS in the evening. Who would have thought you could still do that in Hong Kong. Also, there is a declared monument here as well - a rock carving that was believed to pacify the adverse weather during the Bronze Age in ancient China. If you are worried about food and refreshments, there are several cafes and restaurants there but do not expect a filling meal though, I suggest bringing your own food and drinks and definitely spend a night there to really enjoy this secluded place which you thought had all disappeared in Hong Kong.

The water is almost completely clear, there are very few people, there's almost no litter and the sand is pretty soft. I'd say the only issue is accessibility. First you need to get to sai kung. Then you need to take a bus or taxi to the pavilion. If you want to take the easy way, there's a nice walk to the first beach, sai wan. The beach is still super clean, there's food, there's a boat that can pick you up. You can walk another 20 minutes to the sai kung rock pools which I highly recommend. The water is so nice and cool. Perfect on a hot day. If you want to get workout in, you can go up and down the mountain to get to the rock stream and the first beach instead of the leisurely walk. From the first beach and rock pools, you can take another short hike to the second beach, Ham Tin. The sand and water is even better here than the first. They have food and boat pickup here. This beach reminded me of Thailand and Hawaii. Highly recommend these beaches if you have the time. Distance: 2.5km Duration: 45 minutes Difficulty: 1 out of 5 Top tip: We suggest to hike from Sai Wan Pavilion to Sai Wan Beach, then hike to the other beaches (Ham Tin Beach, Tai Wan Beach, and Tung Wan Beach) and finally take the speedboat back to Sai Kung from Ham Tin Beach. It's easy to hike from one beach to another as the trails are clearly marked. It's up to you if you want to see all four beaches. Speedboats operate till 5 or 6 PM. Tickets are limited so make sure that you buy your ticket the moment you arrive at the beach from where you'd like to leave!

If there's one place I call paradise in Hong Kong, I'd have to name Ham Tin Wan. Away from the…read morehustle and bustle in the city, Ham Tin Wan is definitely THE most beautiful beach in Hong Kong. Unlike some of the beaches that are packed with tourists, such as the Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay and Stanley Beach, Ham Tin Wan is not accessible by any transportation. You could only get there on a hike. As such, the beach remains free from litter, the sand is very soft and the water is as clear as it can be. Ham Tin Wan is on the MacLehose Trail. Start your hike in the morning at Sai Wan Pavillion, takes about 1.5-2 hours to get to Ham Tin Wan. Enjoy a local meal at a cafe in Ham Tin Wan and set off for the second part of your hike towards Chek King. The entire hike takes about 4 hours or so (excluding lunch and resting time). Go on a sunny day in the winter months (December to March) and you'll be guaranteed the best view in Hong Kong you can ever imagine. It's definitely a delight every time I come back here for a hike every few years!

I understand that being so close to the pier and civilization Silvermine beach is prone to be dirtier than those in Sai Kung or even Chung Sha, down the road, however, of all the times that I've been I have not had a problem. That being said I generally go to hang out on the sand, not in the water. Silvermine beach is in a great location surrounded by some good shops and restaurants. It stretches for quite some distance meaning that there's always a spot that isn't crowded. It also has a volleyball net set up for any one crazy enough to play an outdoor sport during the day. On the way to the beach, from the pier and bus terminal, be sure to swing by 711 or one of the other stores to stock up on supplies as walking back and forth tends to be annoying. By the beach are a series of BBQ pits, an inn, and a resort so food and drinks are plentiful. On top of all the above the beach has be known to host some really fun parties and music festivals. One of the music festivals that I went to went on through the day, the music wasn't the best but everyone who attended were there to have a good time, smile and enjoy the weekend. Speaking of weekends, don't come here! I know not everyone has a freelance job or lives in Mui Wo but on Saturday or Sunday the beach starts to fill up. It's never that bad that you feel like your private space is being invaded and if you do feel that way the next beach is only a ten minute tax ride away!
