I've always felt the Silvermine Bay beach was underrated by most of Hong Kong. When asked what's…read morethe best beach to go to Sai Kung is usually the destination. I understand that being so close to the pier and civilization Silvermine beach is prone to be dirtier than those in Sai Kung or even Chung Sha, down the road, however, of all the times that I've been I have not had a problem. That being said I generally go to hang out on the sand, not in the water. Silvermine beach is in a great location surrounded by some good shops and restaurants. It stretches for quite some distance meaning that there's always a spot that isn't crowded. It also has a volleyball net set up for any one crazy enough to play an outdoor sport during the day. On the way to the beach, from the pier and bus terminal, be sure to swing by 711 or one of the other stores to stock up on supplies as walking back and forth tends to be annoying. By the beach are a series of BBQ pits, an inn, and a resort so food and drinks are plentiful. On top of all the above the beach has be known to host some really fun parties and music festivals. One of the music festivals that I went to went on through the day, the music wasn't the best but everyone who attended were there to have a good time, smile and enjoy the weekend. Speaking of weekends, don't come here! I know not everyone has a freelance job or lives in Mui Wo but on Saturday or Sunday the beach starts to fill up. It's never that bad that you feel like your private space is being invaded and if you do feel that way the next beach is only a ten minute tax ride away!

Perhaps it had something to do with exploring the island I now resided on. Anyway, the hike I chose, a short one, led to not so secret waterfalls in Mui Wo. I say not so secret because there is another waterfall, further up the path that is called the secret waterfalls - we didn't make it that far. My friend I and started our journey at 9:30am. Error number one. We thought it would be cooler, and so it was, barely, but what we didn't plan for were the spiders that looked like they walked out of an Aliens movie. Some where as big as my hand, without exaggerating, and there were hundreds of them, without exaggerating once again. We were on the constant look out for the creepy crawlies, walking like dumb and dumber with sticks in our hands. There were times when we had to hunch over and pray while walking. So after making a twenty minute walk last forty minutes we finally made it to the waterfall. It has a small changing room and toilet nearby, and a pagoda for shade. We changed into our swimmers and walked in... except there wasn't really anywhere to swim. There are a few pools big enough to host a trio of people but no where to frolic. Anyway we cooled ourselves of in one of the pools and enjoyed the vision of the waterfall for about an hour. After the hour we explored the falls a bit, stood under the cascading water and forgot about the spiders. Apart from the waterfalls themselves there is a winding, shallow river that heads back to the beach, which I'd like to walk down one day. It turned out to be a fun, short hike, and we managed to build up an appetite for lunch.

Cheung Chau is apparently a popular place to eat for locals. I did always try my best to eat as good of food here as possible. The first time I visited here was the day I decided to end things with an ex. It was a difficult day for me but I was at least able to enjoy a beautiful day at the beach with friends. Be careful though where on the beach you are. Some parts of the beach might be cleaner than others. The second time I came here, I was with a new friend who showed me a place on the cliff where we could I watch the sunset. We were getting to know each other, but for some reason by the end of our day together, I decided to confess that I had a crush. It was perhaps the combination of the sunset, the music playing, and the nature of our conversation. That's how romantic a beach cliff sunset is! This is all to say, this island is beautiful and worth a stop by if you have time in Hong Kong.

It's a…read moregood clean beach, only a short stroll from the ferry, across the narrow part of the island, but as such, it can be quite busy at the weekends and on public holidays. The beach itself is longer than the sectioned off area "beach" area, and there is a distinct difference between maintained and non-maintained! In the official beach area, there are boom lines running out to create a protected swimming area, just in case the sharks want their fins back. Inside the protected area, are two pontoons which are great for the kids to play on. They can get a bit rusty and tatty, so do make sure the kids are careful and have an up-to-date tetanus. Facilities at the beach include public showers and toilets, and life guards on duty. The beach within the cordoned area has very fine sand yellow sand, which is lovely to play and relax on, if you can find a spot that is not already covered by another person. Dogs are also not allowed in this area - thank goodness! However, once you get beyond the cordoned area, the sand becomes granular and heavy on the feet, more like small pebbles, which makes me wonder if the sand on the beach is brought in. The "outside" area is also a free for all, so dog owners let their pets mess everywhere, so be very careful where you step. The division between the good and bad sides is just a line in the sand - literally, so you could park yourself just on the bad side of the line where there is more space (and where there are no presents from our canine "friends"), and use the swimming area within the beach cordon. Have fun, let me know if you see sharks.
