There is a reason why this place is so popular: it feels very home-y with the booths along the sides of the shop and round family-style tables. We arrived around 9:20pm on a Monday night, with little to no line. Just a short 5 minute wait for tables to clear up. In that time, we noticed dessert bowls served in pretty yellow Chinese-style porcelain bowls. Once seated, a Chinese menu peered up at us from under a glass-topped table. I quickly asked for an English menu and a lady kindly brought it to us. I was originally eyeing the walnut cream 合桃露 or the almond cream 杏仁露, but considering my slight cough, decided against anything nutty and heavy, and went for the red bean sweet soup with tangerine peel 陳皮紅豆沙, and boy am I GLAD that I did. It wasn't too dense or too watery. The red bean was blended quite smoothly into the soup with small chunks here and there. There were no visibly large red beans as you would see in other places. While I previously preferred the large chunky "hong dao sa", I think my tastes buds have changed, and have found my go-to place at Yuen Kee. In addition, what I liked best was the use of the tangerine peel - which gave the red bean soup a new uplifting citrus-y smell and taste, and provided a pleasant and natural sweetness to the soup (compared with overly and unnaturally sweet ones elsewhere). My friend's sesame soup 芝麻湖 was just as delicious! Like my red bean soup, it was perfectly blended, and not too grainy, nor too thick or goopy of a sesame mixture. I only wish ALL the desserts came in the yellow bowls - ours came in plain white bowls. You can be sure I'll be back once my health is fully restored.

I honestly wish all bakeries could operate the way they do. There are no English signs and the workers do not speak much English at all. (#1) The place is old school and super local. Instead of grabbing a tray and serving yourself, in this setup the items are out on display in tubs and you point to each one that you want the worker to package for you. There is always a crowd here, so items run out quick. I love their version of the egg tart (蛋撻) and the wife cake (老婆餅) is one of the best I've had. A popular pastry is their hot dog pastry (腸仔包), which is fluffy and almost buttery with every bite. They have an awesome variety of shao bing (燒餅), which they bake and grill almost looking like stuffed pancakes, but they're usually filled with a sweeter ingredient such as bean paste (豆沙), sweetened custard (奶黃), azuki / red bean (紅豆), just to name a few. Everything ranges from $3-7 HKD, which in my book is extremely affordable. Try to target the items you want ahead of time and be sure to bring cash. Since 1984, the bakery focuses on traditional treats. Loved the banana cake which is light and addictively delicious. The pan fried mochi with sesame seeds is so unique. The shop has a decent line that moves quickly. No surprise that it has been Michelin recommended and featured on Netflix. Next time, I'll try the wife cake.

Enter, grab a tray and some tongs, buzz around and put your baked goods on your tray and take it to the counter. They will add it up and you pay...pay cash that is. There is no English translation on the descriptive signs in front of the different baked goods, so it will be a surprise if you do not speak Chinese (like me!). But they are baked goods...even a wrong choice is a baked good, so how could you go wrong....right? Items though were tasty and my husband (who is Chinese) likes this place better than the baked items being sold on the first floor of Fusion just a few doors down.
