They gave us a booklet along with the paper to fill out, and most of the dim sum was the classic dim sum that I'm accustomed to. Their chiu chou fun gor was alright for me. They did put a good amount of peanuts in here but the exterior was a bit heavier on the dough side. Their siu mai and har gow were pretty good. Their cheung fun wasn't the silky light type, so I was just alright with it. Their Chicken with Sticky Rice wraped in Lotus Leaf was huge though, way bigger than those in Los Angeles. Their fresh mango custard roll was my highlight though, as they had chunks of mango in the middle and it was sweet. Would try this again. I think the one other aspect of this place is the interior is really clean, and they have a decent amount of tables inside. Service is a bit more attentive as the area isn't as large. I was most certainly full upon completion of this meal though haha.

This is quintessential Hong Kong dim sum for the masses and not to be missed under any circumstances!

This is the most ghetto dim sum spot I've been. The food is great. I like the contrast where there are two Lamborghinis parked outside. The staff is friendly toward regulars and Hong Kongers. Not so much for foreigners. There aren't traditional dim sum carts. You fetch your own dim sum from the chef. The ordering system is, you tell the people working there how many people. They will seat you next to strangers. Then they will ask you what type of tea and give you silverware. You have to rinse your own bowls and cups in tea. Then you walk up to the dim sum chef and tell them what you want. You get a piece of paper from the cashier lady inside first. If you order too much, you have to come back as the steamers are pretty hot. I saw two Korean tourists got yelled at ask they didn't know how the system worked. My recommendations are pork dim sum, shrimp rolls and egg rolls. Sadly, 新龍城茶樓 will close soon. Ngau Chi Wan Village is under redevelopment and the restaurant will close as a result of that. They've been here since 1959.

This restaurant is a bit out of the way and the kind of place you wouldn't know about unless you knew a local. I learned of this spot from my aunt who lives in HK and has brought me here for dinner a couple times. The storefront does not have an English name so you will need to look for the Chinese title. Look for a red color sign. The restaurant interior has a feel of a hole in the wall. When you enter, grab a table if there is one open. Though be forewarned that you might need to share it if the restaurant fills up. It is best to get in early (5-ish) before the crowd at dinner time. There isn't an English menu, so it helps if you come here with a Chinese speaker. But there are menu item photos plastered over the wall so you could simply point to what you want here. The signature menu item here are their dan dan noodles. They are also a very good deal since it is just HK$24. This dish is spicy, though you can ask for a less spicy version but it is a bit watered down in flavor. On my recent trip, I had a few other items in addition to the dan dan noodles and all four of them were great. They have this fried fish appetizer which are crunchy that I couldn't get enough of. Then there were the two Sichuanese standards, chili green beans with ground beef and ma po tofu. The green beans were nice and crisp with plenty of garlic and chili pepper. The ma po tofu was silky and comforting. They also have xiaolongbao here which are HK$50 for an order of 8. For a restaurant that does not specialize in Shanghai cuisine, I thought these were quite good. Not the best I have had, but solid. The service is great here. And the chef was quite accommodating despite all of the special requests we had. The restaurant is a bit off the beaten path, but if you are looking for good Sichuanese food, Wing Lai Yuen is worth seeking out.

She used to live in this neighborhood when she was a child and this was one of her favorite restaurants back then. It's very popular among the locals and there are hardly any foreigners. I've been living in China for over 6 months but this Sichuan restaurant serves more delicious food than what I had in Mainland! I especially liked their 擔擔麵 (dandanmian) and 小籠包 (this is not really 川菜 but who cares? 好吃!), so good! 不錯!For desserts, I recommend 炸銀絲卷 (sweet fried bread which is crunchy on the outside, you eat it with a condensed milk like dip), 雷沙湯圓 (hot mochi with black sesame cream inside) , and 豆沙鍋餅 (Awesome pancake with sweet red bean paste! H-A-O-C-H-I!! ) Fast, inexpensive, & delicious. Highly recommended!

Kam Wah Cafe is also famous for their freshly baked Pineapple Bun and Butter. Can't start your day without some HK Milk Tea and Iced Ovaltine. My son said it's a good thing the nai cha in the states are not as good because he was starting to develop an addiction. Lol. For those of you who don't know, it's made with Ceylon leaves, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The French toast was so damn delicious but a bit indulgent. I do wish I could taste more of the peanuts. My son loved his bolo bao. We also shared a hot bowl of macaroni soup with Spam and lettuce. Thinking back, I regret not trying the Spicy Satay Beef Instant Noodle. I will have to look for this back in the states. The aunties working here are just the most adorable, very kind and welcoming. One of them took the time to help us navigate the huge menu and recommended a few items. I would come back again and again if I could. I have a mad love for these iconic HK Style Cafes aka Cha Chaan Tengs. These affordable quick-paced restaurants were influenced by the city's 150 years of British rule. The Har gao had a very thin shell, but it also wasn't fragile. It wasn't too doughy or glutenous, and the shrimp was perfectly snappy and had a very fresh delicious flavor. I decided on two dim sum spots to try on this trip with Tim Ho Wan being the first. I came 6 PM on a weekday and it wasn't busy, we were quickly seated as there were plenty of available tables. Since we were not too hungry, we ordered the Shrimp Cheung Fun, Har Gow, and Siu Mai. It took around 5 mins for the dim sum to come out and the food looked good. However, it really seemed like some flavors were missing the umami taste that you would expect of dim sum. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a disappointing meal, so I would recommend trying other dim sum spots when in Hong Kong.
