Once you reach the front of the line you'll see the chef preparing noodles at the window. Service is a bit rude but that's Hong Kong for y'all! We ordered the beef stew and fish ball rice noodles and got it within minutes after ordering. Make sure you add the beef stew sauce if you are ordering the fish ball noodle soup!! It was delicious and the noodles were cooked to perfection. Beef stew was perfectly cook and was not tough. The restaurant consist of big tables so prepare to share your table with other people!

For some that are not acquired to these type of food, you gotta try it if you wanna be one of the "local" people. Beware, there is a lot of MSG in the soup broth, but then again, not many noodles places in Hong Kong that does not put MSG in there soup broth. Please be patient as you will expect long waits during morning peak periods. They even have this mentioned in Chinese that is posted on the walls.

Hong Kong wet markets are the less pretentious version of North American farmer's markets. Don't…read moreget me wrong, I love both. Farmer's markets to me are a great place to get local produce but then you also get stuff like hipster coffee, cucumber/avocado/kale water, and funky cheeses. But these wet markets are something else. Less refined, but feeling like the real deal. Here you walk around hanging cuts of meat and tanks of seafood. Take in that raw stench and realize that cow stomach hanging from a hook could be in your next bowl of noodles. Tai Po Hui is indoors with air conditioning, already one step above traditionally outdoor street stalls, but you still get that authentic feeling. Vendors are talk-shouting across the stands to each other. People are picking out the best cut of steak, the fattest fish, the plumpest chicken feet. This is where the neighborhood comes to shop, haggle, and grab cheap eats. I'm sure there are many other wet markets around Hong Kong, but this one is very large and very clean. The freshness of the food is remarkable. The shrimp are bouncing around on top of each other, the fish are still swimming energetically. And as someone who did not grow up in Hong Kong, I saw species I've never seen before, like beautiful Lilac-coloured clams and rose apples. I never went to the cooked food centre, but I'm sure it's as impressive and diverse as the ground level market. This feels like a common market for the common folk, but it can also be an exotic food journey for tourists. I cannot recommend going to a wet market enough and Tai Po Hui Market is a great choice. It's truly a unique experience to get a taste of local culture, figuratively and literally. This, of course, is juxtaposed by the fact that the parking lot is an absolute mess of Mercedes, BMWs, and all manners of rich cars from the nearby millionaires who like to live in Tai Po. Just uh...take the subway. :) (53/100) - 2017

I can't say this place is as amazing as their name says. It may not be the most delicious place…read moreyou'll eat, but it's still pretty good in my opinion. For your information, they do not have an English menu. I do suggest you to learn some Chinese characters or bring someone who can understand or read Chinese. The location is a little sketch, but it's not too dangerous looking. Also, the restaurant is a little cramped, so I don't suggest a huge party with a lot of baggage. I had ordered the 一鳴拉麵 for 68 HKD. Which comes with half salted soft-boiled egg, 3 slices of char siu, seaweed, and noodles. They had the option of (direct translation) straight noodles or cooked noodles. Cooked noodles is the regular noodles you'd get from any ramen place. Straight noodles mean thinner noodles. I opted for the straight noodles because I had no idea what it was until I got my order. You also have the option of adding green onions or making the noodles spicy. Unfortunately, I had forgotten the rest of what the order paper had, but this is the gist of it. I also ordered gyoza. It was just like any gyoza. Nothing special. Service: Teenage. Why did I write teenage? Because it was very obvious the waiters there were teenagers. You can see them being in a rush or slapping down items on the table. You could barely hear a person speak to you when explaining the menu, and they were very on top of trying to get the finished food off your table. You knew they weren't as experienced as a waiter, but they were trying to be considerate. Kudos for trying. Overall, it's all right. I don't mind coming back again.

Found this congee place on Open Rice. Did the Congee / Cheung fun 艇仔粥/蝦米腸粉 set for HK$50. A little pricy for way out here. I pay $47 on HK Island for the same set. But it is very high quality with tasty ingredients. Good 腸粉 is hard to make and they do a crazy good job. No drink as part of the set so I ponyed up $17 for the milk tea. $67 for a very tasty but not large lunch. Can't beat it.

It looked so…read moredamn good that I asked a good friend if we could eat there during my short stay in September. Little did I know how destructive and disruptive Mangkhut would end up being so I had to postpone the visit. Little did I know that Chan Hon Kee was literally down the street from where my friend lives. Only issue was that it takes around 45 mins to get from the island out to Tai Po. We arrived shortly before 1830 to find a hella busy restaurant with a fairly long line. Luckily, the line moved quickly and we jumped the line as we had 5 in our party. As typical with most old school HK restaurants, the workers here don't have patience with patrons that are indecisive so don't take it personally when they give you attitude. Be sure you know what you want to order before they seat you and all will be good. We started off with two bowls of 皮蛋瘦肉粥 and damn was it tasty. The 粥 had the perfect consistency which I only remember my grandmas making. I have yet to find a place in LA or SF that is as good. Only other place similar that I can think of was at a place my Uncle took me to in 光州. Next came out was the 炸兩 and the 牛肉腸粉. Both were super tasty but the 炸兩 took home the gold medal. The last two dishes that came out were the 煲仔飯. Was a bit too eager to dig into them as the rice was still a bit on the wet side but damn were they still good! Was stuffed or else I would've scraped the sides to eat all of the crispy rice. This place was worth the long trek out to Tai Po and am looking forward to going back next year. Do save room for the 煲仔飯 as they were delicious.i

You'll never find this establishment empty. Never…read more Why, you ask? Because the Yunnan noodles are damn good and cheap! I usually go with a friend and order off their set menu, which means your soup noodle comes in a huge bowl and has all of the toppings inside (tip: share this with a friend if you have a small stomach). All orders come with bean sprouts, bean curd and chives. You can also add any additional toppings like chicken, beef, fish balls etc. I'd recommend their wings too. Other things to note: - The entire menu is in Chinese and the servers pretty much don't speak English - Be prepared to sit with strangers at a table when it gets super crowded (yay... collectivism?) - They have multiple levels of spiciness and even their "mild" is very spicy- I usually get "3 mild" (三小辣) and my mouth is pretty much already on fire

It is hard to find a proper translation for this rice pasta, so for the moment I would just call…read morethem rice sticks; let me know if there are other more appropriate names. The popularity of rice sticks shops soared only very recently; I could still remember a time where there is only won ton noodles. Truth be told, this rice pasta is not originated from the southeastern part of China; rather, it comes more from the southwest, the Yungui region of China. Tamjai is one of the pioneers that introduced this form of pasta into the local scene and popularize it amongst the local community. Since that region of China like their food hot, Tamjai has preserved this tradition and bring heat along with the pasta. The fun part of having this style of noodle soup is that you can choose basically what ever topping you fancy: chicken, pork, brisket...you have to see for yourselves for the variation of toppings they offer. You can also get to choose the soup to go with the noodles and toppings; bad news to those who could not stand the heat, 3 out of 4 soup bases are hot. If you want to challenge yourself, there are also different level of hotness for you to choose, ranging from 1/4 chili, their scale in gauging hotness, to over 5 of them. I would not recommend the top level of hotness for the, not faint of hearts, but of guts, as it is hot enough to make one sweat with only the hotness of 1/2 chili. Another thing i seriously have to make clear is their portion. People say everything's bigger in Texas, well, then i suppose the Tam's family has got a little Texas in them as well. Each serving of the noodle soup is so generous that a friend of mine was totally amazed by how the bowl look visually untouched while she was stuffing herself nearly to death; and there you go the hugeness of the portion. With an affordable cost, almost outrageous portions and good food, this is the ideal place for office workers to have lunch. And now you ask why there is always a line in front of the entrance?
