Off to Valley Vet we went. With a boarding stay coming up quickly and a soon-to-be-expired bordetella vaccination, we needed an appointment... like yesterday. Luckily, the receptionist was able to squeeze us into the doctor's books for later that same day. Score! My dog Sasha took an instant linking to Dr. Kenda and his easy bedside manner. I took a liking to him as well, with his very thorough approach and useful tips for keeping our furry friends healthy in Hong Kong. Sasha received several expert vaccinations and didn't even flinch! I'm also pleased that Dr. Kenda turned me onto a heartworm preventative that can be administered annually via vaccination instead of monthly tablets. One less thing for me to remember? I'm all for it. To reiterate their thoroughness, they even follow up with mail in the post containing all sorts of useful information. So happy we found a wonderful vet in the neighborhood that offers 24/7/365 emergency services, and even makes house calls! That's how it's done.

Goldfish, turtles, rabbits, puppies and more…read more The Goldfish Market is such an iconic street market in Hong Kong. So much fun to wander looking at the giant colorful aquariums, tanks of turtles, and bags and bags and bags of goldfish. Located on Tung Choi Street, the shops and stalls line several blocks. Why goldfish? If you live in public housing, which is quite a deal in Hong Kong, there are restrictions on what kind of small pet can live in your apartment. More than that, goldfish are an integral part of cultural life in Hong Kong and China. Goldfish are believed to bring abundance and prosperity to the home. Goldfish also represent the Feng Shui of bringing richness, money or harmony to the home. Why are the fish in the bags? How do they survive? Since the stores are limited for space, the fish are placed into the plastic bags that are pumped with oxygen. Prices are marked on the bag. If they don't sell, they go back into the tanks at night. Seems like a lot of work. Don't want a goldfish? There are also lots of other cute choices. The puppies were so adorable. The fluffy bunnies just happily hopped or slept in their crates. Lots of turtles and cats as well. A very unique market to explore in Kowloon.

When you look at lists of touristy places to visit in Hong Kong, Goldfish Street comes up,…read morerightfully, as it is visually appealing. I myself included it on my list of places I wanted to visit when I arrived for my second visit to Hong Kong, which coincided with Mid-Autumn Festival of 2019. I was staying in Tsim Sha Tsui and wanted to explore more of the Kowloon area. (Of course at the time, I had no idea what "Kowloon" or "the Island" referred to.) Goldfish Street is in Mong Kok, which is the busy shopping central area of Kowloon, so one should expect to see people constantly walking along these busy sidewalks. I visited Goldfish Street when it was dark out, which I suppose enhanced the experience of viewing the fish, with the lights illuminating the fish's diversely extravagant appearances in order to entice prospective customers. Of course, I imagine there are just as many opportunistic photographers (including me) trying to take advantage of the free photo settings, though it should be duly noted that several of these fish stores have clearly visible "no photography" signs, which obviously comes from experience. Expect to get a lot of disapproving glares from store owners if you attempt to be a fish influencer without buying any fish.

I'm a bit of an animal liker, not an animal lover per se, a liker! I like them to an extent, but…read moreonly until they poo on my living room floor. However, I do get the need to provide for our animal brethren, and think that Whiskers N Paws is a great one stop shop for al your pet needs, providing they are cats or dogs. Located in Horizon Plaza in Ap Lei Chau, Whiskers N Paws has a large store filled with all sorts of pet products, raging from the necessary foods, care products, bedding, through to more playful items like squeaky toys and exercise apparatus. The store is spacious and well laid out, so there is plenty of room to wander around, with pets and kids. As well as the store, there is a terrace and play area out the back for your pets to run around in and be sociable. It costs HKD60 per pet, but is nicely kept and a bit of a treat in the city. The terrace area also serves as a "showroom" for the numerous pet adoption days. Kirsten's Zoo runs a cat adoption day every 3rd Sunday of the month, and Hong Kong Dog Rescue runs a puppy day every Sunday. If you are thinking about getting a pet, I would thoroughly recommend these adoption days as a first port of call. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, but there don't seem to be very many around, so you may have to chase around a bit looking for help. The products are reasonably priced, and the range is plentiful. It's nice to be able to come to one big out of town store for everything, rather than numerous mom and pop stores in town.

I haven't yet visited Whiskers N Paws in the flesh, but I am a customer and can confirm that they…read moreare indeed a godsend. If you're car-less (like me), there's no way you'd enjoy lugging a 15-pound bag of dog food across town on MTR unless you truly enjoy suffering and sweating profusely. But Whiskers N Paws delivers, and they do it for free - at least on HK island, though I'm not sure if there's a minimum spend. They also carry my Shar Pei's favorite brand of dog food, the Canadian brand Orijen. I was starting to worry that Sasha would have to switch to a different label after moving to HK, and as it turns out only a handful of retailers carry this premium brand. I was also able to scoop up some Earthbath shampoo and wipes (love this natural Californian brand!), a new bed while we await for the fancier one to arrive via shipping container, a banana toy with squeaker, and some premium freeze-dried treats. This may seem excessive, but my pup deserves all of this - and more - following a 15-hour flight! This store with a natural product bent also offers grooming services, pet care classes, and they host events such as adoption days. But get this: they've recently created a permanent cat homing station! This dedicated space shows off beautiful cats to potential feline parents. How's that for causing all the feels? I think that Sasha and I will soon need to make a field trip out of it and visit Whiskers N Paws! Thanks for carrying the first-rate products that Sasha enjoys so much, and for making them so accessible.

I spent about $900 in total for one 26kg golden retriever male dog and one 22kg mixed breed female dog, including anal glance expression, ears and eyes cleaning, pads and sanitary shaving, paws scissoring with nails trimming and belly coat trimming. It takes about 3 hours for 2 dogs. Nice grooming experience, my furry kids were treated like VIP.
