Off to Valley Vet we went. With a boarding stay coming up quickly and a soon-to-be-expired bordetella vaccination, we needed an appointment... like yesterday. Luckily, the receptionist was able to squeeze us into the doctor's books for later that same day. Score! My dog Sasha took an instant linking to Dr. Kenda and his easy bedside manner. I took a liking to him as well, with his very thorough approach and useful tips for keeping our furry friends healthy in Hong Kong. Sasha received several expert vaccinations and didn't even flinch! I'm also pleased that Dr. Kenda turned me onto a heartworm preventative that can be administered annually via vaccination instead of monthly tablets. One less thing for me to remember? I'm all for it. To reiterate their thoroughness, they even follow up with mail in the post containing all sorts of useful information. So happy we found a wonderful vet in the neighborhood that offers 24/7/365 emergency services, and even makes house calls! That's how it's done.

I (and my doggies) have been coming here for 7 years now and would not make any other choices when it comes to vet service (2 thumbs up for Dr. Gerry!). All the doctors are foreign trained (Australia, New Zealand, S. Africa) and majority of them are non-locals. If speaking English is not your cup of tea, rest assured cause all the vet assistants are good translators. Since they have been in the business for quite some time they can get very busy - no walk-ins except emergencies. Usually early mornings and late nights are easier to secure an appointment.

My 18-month-old pup Sasha is everything. One of the most important things I had to figure out…read morebefore moving to Hong Kong from the States was finding a trustworthy pet sitter, when traveling for business or on holiday. I spent more than a few hours Googling dog boarding facilities and as soon as I landed upon the Play with Des page, I was reasonably sure I had found 'the one'. Play with Des offers kennel-free boarding at a family home in the New Territories, where it is incredibly green and peaceful and leafy. Unlike 99% of the boarding facilities in HK - Sasha gets to breathe in fresh air in the countryside, get taken on legitimate nature hikes, go outside 5-6 times per day, and romp around in a safe, fenced-in environment. While inside the house, he can make himself at home - and he often does, as sometimes I'll spy a photo of him relaxing on the sofa. Like a boss! Sasha LOVES being around other dogs, and he can count on there always being several furry friends to play with and socialize. And I love Sasha staying at Play with Des, because no matter where I am in the world, I can wake up and see my dog happy and thriving via Play With Des' prolific Twitter stream. How awesome is that? The couple that runs Play with Des - April and Robin - aren't just savvy business owners; they've become real-life friends whom I've shared a meal with and enjoy seeing when they pick-up and drop-off Sasha. They're warm, big-hearted, fun to chat up, and their love of animals is obvious to anyone they meet. Their business' name - Play with Des - is named after April's rescue dog, a sweet and gentle boy named Desmond. I completely trust Sasha in their care, and I've never seen Sasha more sad to leave a boarding facility. And when they pick him up? He's jumping up all over them, ecstatic to know he'll soon be spending a few days (or weeks) in doggy paradise! Now that's one hell of a terrific testimonial, coming directly from Sasha. Here's what you need to know: + Get acquainted with Play with Des rates and info via their detailed website (http://www.playwithdes.com/) + Email April with dates of care needed and vaccination records (the site specifies which ones are required) + Prepare your dog's food and also pack a bed or favorite toy, if desired + Someone from the Play with Des family will pick up your pup at your home + Stay off the internet during your holiday except to check out the photos of your dog looking blissfully content + Settle back in at home after your trip, and wait for your dog to be dropped off! Play with Des is such a life-changer. And for the record, their rates are completely reasonable for the comprehensive care and unlimited love your furry friend is receiving. So happy I've found Sasha's home away from home!

If I was either a cat or a dog then the rating of this store would be a five, I'd be in heaven…read morewagging my tail or purring like an engine. But I'm not. I'm a human being and as such pet stores do not light my bulb. The thing is I have two cats that I am totally in love with (one of them anyway, the other one is just annoying). And love makes fools of us all. For example it had me walking into Pet Line thinking, I wonder if one of the cats would appreciate a toy or some catnip? Realistically speaking they wouldn't have a clue how the cat nip arrived, "Oooh that's cool, let's roll around in it... then eat it." Or the toy, "Oooh that's cool, let's scratch it... then eat it." Not a single thank you for the giver. Forgetting about my selfish cats for the time being Pet Line, as far as I know, provides pet owners with just about anything a pet would need. Toys, big cushions or little homes, a range of food, some juicy snacks, and cleaning soaps. The set up is pretty standard with everything organized by category. However, the entire time we were browsing in the shop the shop keeper was checking out the newest gossip on facebook, only paying any attention to us when I asked for a business card. Not that that is a bad thing, I'd rather that than some one hovering over my shoulder! By the time I left I had bought a small pack of catnip and a tiny scratch pad in the hopes that the cats would use that instead of the sofa. I'll be back again during Christmas time for another small prezzie - mainly because I don't know where else to go!

However, I do get the need to provide for our animal brethren, and think that Whiskers N Paws is a great one stop shop for al your pet needs, providing they are cats or dogs. Located in Horizon Plaza in Ap Lei Chau, Whiskers N Paws has a large store filled with all sorts of pet products, raging from the necessary foods, care products, bedding, through to more playful items like squeaky toys and exercise apparatus. The store is spacious and well laid out, so there is plenty of room to wander around, with pets and kids. As well as the store, there is a terrace and play area out the back for your pets to run around in and be sociable. It costs HKD60 per pet, but is nicely kept and a bit of a treat in the city. The terrace area also serves as a "showroom" for the numerous pet adoption days. Kirsten's Zoo runs a cat adoption day every 3rd Sunday of the month, and Hong Kong Dog Rescue runs a puppy day every Sunday. If you are thinking about getting a pet, I would thoroughly recommend these adoption days as a first port of call. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, but there don't seem to be very many around, so you may have to chase around a bit looking for help. The products are reasonably priced, and the range is plentiful. It's nice to be able to come to one big out of town store for everything, rather than numerous mom and pop stores in town.

If you're car-less (like me), there's no way you'd enjoy lugging a 15-pound bag of dog food across town on MTR unless you truly enjoy suffering and sweating profusely. But Whiskers N Paws delivers, and they do it for free - at least on HK island, though I'm not sure if there's a minimum spend. They also carry my Shar Pei's favorite brand of dog food, the Canadian brand Orijen. I was starting to worry that Sasha would have to switch to a different label after moving to HK, and as it turns out only a handful of retailers carry this premium brand. I was also able to scoop up some Earthbath shampoo and wipes (love this natural Californian brand!), a new bed while we await for the fancier one to arrive via shipping container, a banana toy with squeaker, and some premium freeze-dried treats. This may seem excessive, but my pup deserves all of this - and more - following a 15-hour flight! This store with a natural product bent also offers grooming services, pet care classes, and they host events such as adoption days. But get this: they've recently created a permanent cat homing station! This dedicated space shows off beautiful cats to potential feline parents. How's that for causing all the feels? I think that Sasha and I will soon need to make a field trip out of it and visit Whiskers N Paws! Thanks for carrying the first-rate products that Sasha enjoys so much, and for making them so accessible.
