The Canny Man is a great Scottish pub located in the basement of the Wharney Guangdong Hotel. It is HK's only Scottish pub, and despite it's rather odd location in this very Asian hotel, once you step out of the lobby filled with mainland Chinese, and into the basement bar, you will be transported back to Edinburgh in an instant. Now, I say Edinburgh, as this is a very pleasant, clean, and polite bar. This is not the Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow dive bars that I am used to, more like Rose Street in Edinburgh tourist bars.
Being a Scottish themed pub, you won't be surprised to know they have over 100 single malts available, as well as a great range of craft beers. They also serve really tasty and authentic Scottish fare, including haggis, tatties and neeps, Scotch pies, and stovies. It's quite different to "British" pub grub, so well worth a visit.
Being off the beaten track, The Canny Man makes a great effort to do deals and promotions to draw punters in. They have a different theme every night, including whiskey Tuesdays, Ladies night Wednesday, etc. They also show lots of sports (but don't wear your George Cross, it's a different country!), and are home to the BBC club of HK, not the TV company but the British Born Chinese.
Despite these on going promotions, it is a fairly quiet bar. There is often live music, but unlike the ripping bands in Wan Chai, they usually have an acoustic duo on. I like that it is a bit more quiet and homely. No one wants to drink scotch with a din going on around you! read more
