Sometimes the air conditioning is too cold, but I think that's more of a Hong Kong problem then it is a problem of theirs. The popcorn is tasty. You can choose from caramel, chocolate or salt / butter. You can even mix! If you have a Platinum American Express card, it's buy one get one free on Thursdays and Fridays! My only complaint about this theater is how the theaters are separated. They're split between the 6th, 8th and 10th floors of The One. I wish they were just all on one floor. Besides that, I would definitely recommend catching a flick here.

Although they are located in different floors, the theaters are all conveniently located next to the escalators. And for popular movies like Jurassic World, they have multiple theaters showing it, so I have options to watch it at 8:00pm, 8:30pm, 9:00pm, 9:40pm... so flexible that it sounds like you can just walk in and there will be seats available. For smaller theaters, there are a few more perks too. Even row E (fifth row) is never too close to the screen. Actually I'd even say row E was perfect. Less people getting in the theater late, too. The sound system was great. 3D effect was okay, as I was never a big fan of it anyway. But most surprisingly, the vibration effect on the seats (which only available every alternate row) was great. You can definitely feel the immersion when the dinosaurs making big steps on the ground (and it does simulate real-life experience too, right? when you have heavy vehicles passing by, you feel the vibration on the ground). Anyway, I'd definitely prefer to watch movies in smaller theaters now. IMAX is great, but doesn't worth the money nor the time fighting for the perfect timeslot and perfect seats.

Unfortunately I didn't see a clear map of where particular studios with exhibits vs private art studios were so it was kinda confusing just walking around. I still had a good time overall because the red bricks and green-accented windows make it a great backdrop of pics! There were also lots of posters for hands-on artsy classes such as ring-making and hair accessory-making workshops. I wish I had learned about these cool activities earlier on so I'd recommend doing some research and planning ahead.

The Cattle Depot used to be a few blocks away from where I lived. When it was still used as a…read moreslaughterhouse till the 90s, locals seldom walk pass that area and avoided it like a plague, because of the intense smell of pigs and cows emitting from within (people who frequented locations next to the old times KCRC railway tracks would know what I meant, same thing as when the livestock carts pass by, only that for the depot, the smell STAYS). Around the year millennium, it ceased operation finally, and was listed as grade 2 historical building by the Antiquities and Monument Office. It was revitalized (well, revitalization is a new term, there was no such terminology back then, simply - kept and reused) as an Artist Village, aimed at providing studio space for the artists expelled from Oil Street Artist Village when the land was reclaimed by the government. During its early days as an Artist Village, it was managed like a private rental premise and wasn't opened for public visits, expect for the open day origanized for a few times, when the artists display their works like an exhibition. There was a guard at the gate, and back then architectural students had to reason quite a bit with the guard, showing student cards and all, to ask for permission to visit the place and take pictures for school projects, paper research etc. etc. (or sneak in when Mr. Guard was shirking somewhere). Coming to the present day, the depot outdoor area is finally open daily for free visits from 10 to 10. I'm truly glad about the change in policy and in the raised social awareness about historical sites in HK. It is most certainly beneficial for citizens to feel a sense of belonging when given more access to places of local history merits. One can't help but compare the Depot with recent revitalization-for-art projects like the PMQ in central (which I have a separate review) that generated much more buzz. The low-profile Depot had been repurposed for over 10 years but still seems to be lacking a 'business model' that can elevate it to the communal level, and explore its full potential in activating the district or the art-design scene. On the other side of the coin however, as it is not managed by a private group, it is less governed by commercial viability and the rent can remain low, for the benefit of artists to retain their independent stature.This give and take, how would you balance? Though it is marketed as a "new" cinema but in fact the facilities is pretty dated. The seating is worn out and in need of renovations. The staff though really nice and helpful. They even willing to store your luggage while you enjoy your movie time!

Finding a FREE museum to visit!…read more The Hong Kong Museum of Art was the perfect place to escape the rain, with multiple floors of both permanent and rotating art exhibits. The museum contains a wide variety of styles, from modern art installations to 17th century Cantonese porcelain. Our favorite exhibit was the calligraphy display. Every room and floor had multiple staff members for security and to answer any questions. Once we had had our fill of the incredible pieces, we enjoyed the harbor views at the back of the building. Definitely worth your time when you're in HK!

We especially loved the representation from local artist, amazing pieces capturing the history and richness of Hong Kong's past. The exhibits were well laid out and not overwhelming and offered a distinct and engaging experience. We also found out that the museums in HK are totally free thanks to an endowment. We would have paid for admissions tickets but it's really nice that they make art free for all. The next time you're in HK in the TST area, I highly recommend paying a stop at the Museum of Art.

The move price tickets are commensurate with the atmosphere. Tickets for 2D movie run 130 hkd and if you buy online there is a 10 hkd service fee. Definitely not cheap. I usually buy my tickets online because I like to know where I'm sitting. The process for printing your tickets is quick and efficient (just a swipe of the credit card used). The movie theater itself is nice. There is pretty good food options a full stocked bar. Each screening room is fairly compact so as long as you aren't sitting too far in the front you will have a good seat. The seats are wide and comfortable. The screen is big and makes for a pleasurable viewing experience. I have seen a number of movies here and prefer it over the movie theater at Times Square or IFC.

Words that could adequately describe Newport Theatre: Ghetto, rundown, cheap, limited, and small…read more These words might be interpreted negatively, but know this: This was, at one point, my go-to theatre in all of Kowloon. Say what you will about HK's largest working class neighborhood, but this was where I could count on catching a flick without the guilt of paying more. On a surface level, Newport Theatre doesn't have much going for it. The place is tiny, with only two screens and rotating movies that are mainly western and local HK ones every week. From an interior perspective, it needs a gut renovation -- peeling wallpaper, raggedy seats, and subpar facilities. Concessions are also disappointing; much like the theatre's movie variety, it is limited. The fact it's situated in the heart of Mongkok would mean it's absurdly crowded on occasion, which it can be. Go during the school / work hours and the crowd is drastically less of an issue. To get a ticket is relatively easy, just head directly to the window in the front of the theatre where an agent (who likely will not be able to speak great English, so be forewarned) will help you choose assigned seating and available times for the movie showing that evening. Contrary to the look of it, they do accept credit cards (though cash is always recommended). The theatre itself is also small, but not enough to deter me. Screens are not fit for digital projection or IMAX worthy stuff, but it gets the job done. The same bodes for the sound, which is equally important as the picture quality. When the ticket prices range from $50-80 throughout the day, it's certainly not a terrible way to pass the time at all.
