From the previous reviews that you might have read, you know I am a person that can never, ever…read morelive without soup. In times when you are constantly eating out and are missing the home-cooked soups you get from your mom, this is the perfect place for you to go to. Located in the business center of Sheung Wan, this joint, good soup targets the office workers whom are deprived from proper soups. Busy OLs munching on shop bought salads; men in suit slaving over stock market digging on lunch boxes, from a Chinese medicine perspective, these types of eating habit is very unhealthy and is actually disrupting the internal balance of the body. You know how the chinese use to combine foods and medicine; it is believed that the ingredients in the soup have therapeutic properties and could actually restore the balance of the Ying and Yang. Frankly, i don't really care too much about the internal balance thing, as long as the soup tastes good, it works for me. Indeed, the soups served by this joint is freshly made and have been simmering for long hours; you can actually feel the collagen sticking your lips together after taking a sip off the cup. That's the very definition of a good bowl of soup. I got to say the flavor might be too mild for me, that is, not enough salt; yet all the hard work put into the soup costs only $8 for a cup and $22 for a pot, what more could you ask for? $22 for a taste from the heart of the home, it is worth the while, and more.

Wow, almost ten years later, my updated review of Din Tai Fung (DTF) in New Town Plaza of Shatin…read moreis now posted. The location remains well alive at the basement level near several other eateries and the movie theater. The other tenants have already come and go while DTF is kicking. The crowds are still very present and seating is hard to come by without any wait, especially during dinner hours regardless of being a weekday or weekend. However, their previous system of securing a table by reservation online via an app has long been gone. The only way to reserve a table is to wait in line in person and they won't seat you until the entire party is present. The service is still great and quite attentive. The menu extensively includes a variety of dumplings, including those pan-fried, steamed, or soup dumplings. They also offer amazing noodles, noodle soups, fried rice, hot and cold appetizers, vegetable dishes, and a nice handful of desserts. The flavor is also on point for all the options I've ordered and not one dish to disappoint. My group and I always found a favorite item such as the pork chop fried rice, spicy chili oil dumplings, crab roe soup dumplings, jellied ham, and more. It's really an endless list of must-gets because there's hardly anything on the menu we would refuse. Overall a group favorite because of all the options on the menu plus legendary handcrafted soup dumplings that has thin enough skin to hold all the soup without the leak and juicy meat. It's still on my must-visit list everytime I'm around.

Service was excellent and I loved how attentive the staff were. I ordered the pork XLB, the Dan Dan mian, and a Coke. Everything came out super hot. The XLB was very juicy and wrapper to meat ratio was perfect. I would definitely dine here again if I'm ever in the area or craving for XLB again.

I had been scouring Hong Kong for good Vietnamese fare. This restaurant was just the place to help…read moresatiate my Vietnamese food cravings. I don't know how I decided to eat here for the first time (whether it was a recommendation from a policy coworker that would serve as a gleaming recommendation, or noticing a Vietnamese restaurant named after a famous beach town), but I enjoy trying Viet food in non-Viet areas whenever I can (think outside of Vietnam or Vietnamese community centers). Of all the Vietnamese restaurants in Hong Kong I have tried so far, the food at this restaurant tastes closest to what I remember eating as a child, which is Vietnamese food made by Vietnamese people for Vietnamese people. Mind you, I was based in New Territories, so it's not as internationally oriented as Hong Kong Island is, so options are limited. If you're in New Territories and want to taste more traditional Vietnamese food, this place holds promise. I've tried their com tam, bánh cuon, bún bò Hue, bánh xèo, and bún riêu. These are all safe things for me to order, as they're all dishes that I've grown up eating. The fish sauce of course is the key element of flavoring to many of these dishes (the non soup noodle dishes), so don't forget to add the fish sauce!

To start off, make sure you get the coffee -- it packs quite a punch and is not too sweet. If you're visiting from the United States or Canada, you'll instantly notice that there's many more dishes than the Pho, Bun, and Banh Mi -- which are really the only widely available dishes you'll find in North America. There's still a definite influence from French cooking on the other available dishes, but I would recommend venturing out of your comfort zone and definitely trying something spicy or some grilled meats. For something a little different but familiar, I would give the rice paper salad rolls and vermicelli cake a try. Overall, a nice place to visit for fresh, light Vietnamese food.

This brick and mortar business has had a mention on CNN and TripAdvisor. Workers are used to the curious tourists and generally friendly. It is smack in the middle of Sham Shui Po. If you don't pay attention, you'll easily walk past it since it's somewhat hidden behind the sidewalk vendors on Apliu Street. The shop is old and looks it. The space is tight and cluttered, yet SWH still manages to set up 3 to 4 tables to serve customers with. It's not uncommon to have to share tables with other customers here. The kitchen is tucked away in the back. As you walk in, you will see cages with snakes inside. There are two wooden cabinets that I could see and both are like ancient artifacts with tons of drawers. Each slot has two Chinese words "毒蛇" in red labelled on it. You guessed it! Venomous snakes! Our table was only inches away from these live venomous snakes in these drawers with really flimsy looking locks. Let's just say we kept one eye on our food and one eye on those drawers. SWH's menu is obviously serpentine-centric: soup, tempura, stir fry, wine. But wait! They even serve baby mice wine! I have no idea how that worked but *gag*. Really glad that I ate before seeing this special menu item. According to the locals, snake soup is supposed to have medicinal and nutritional value. Best time to consume is in winter. I was told that in order to bring out the snake flavor, add a pinch of lemongrass and white pepper in your bowl. My soup was not as brothy as I had imagined but full of savory substances. The snake meat had been deboned and came out very tender. Tasted like chicken!? We ordered the sticky rice as well. It was different but in a good way. Definitely not something I can eat often. It was rich and filling. All in all, the whole experience was a bit too exotic for me but I'm glad everyone else enjoyed it. We all had a great time.
