It's a simple fisherman's village turned travel destination without being touristy. There's lots of great shops and restaurants to walk through, hidden back alleys where the locals go, it's nothing overly stimulating. But I see it as perfect, and throughout my travels in Hong Kong this the one place I can spend an entire day just breathing it all in. I truly miss it.

We didn't actually expect to see any pink dolphins; we just wanted to explore the traditional village by water. It turned out to be a fantastic, fast-paced 20-minute boat ride! At just 50 HKD per person, it only cost 200 HKD (around $25.50 USD) for the four of us, which is excellent value. As anticipated, we didn't spot any dolphins, but the route itself was wonderful. The boat first glides slowly through the narrow river canals, offering a close-up, water-level view of the historic wooden stilt houses. Then, it hits the open water, speeding out into the bay past the Tai O Heritage Hotel and the iconic General's Rock formation. Seeing the stilt houses up close looks incredibly cool. This is easily one of the most popular activities in the village, and we truly enjoyed this unique experience!

We were so lucky to see several pink dolphins on our boat tour. The adult Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin may be grey, white or pink. Some may appear as an albino dolphin. They are also called the Chinese white dolphins. The dolphins are threatened by habitat loss, water pollution, coastal development, overfishing, plastic pollution and an increase in marine traffic within its natural habitat. Our guide, Liz from This Is Asia Tours, told us that it is rare to see so many pink dolphins. The stilt houses were also so interesting. The tide rises and falls, so the houses are built to account for changing tides. Imagine how much movement is in the boats parked in front of each stilt house. If you visit Tai O, I definitely recommend this short excursion as part of your day. Such a unique experience.

It seems kind of privileged to go and experience being blind for 75 minutes, then pop back to your full-sighted life. Obviously not something the visually impaired can do. But at the same time, putting yourself in someone's shoes is one of the best ways to understand all the difficulties they experience firsthand. We signed up for an afternoon tour, and were put into a group of six total. Before the tour you're given a walking stick, then you venture into the darkness. Our guide Susan led us through different simulated real-world scenarios (crossing a river bridge, taking a boat, crossing the street, exploring a market, and buying food at a cafe) and encouraged us to use our other four senses to their fullest. You literally won't be able to see a thing, so prepare to bump into your fellow group mates. It's not dangerous though; your guide is right there the whole time and there are CCTVs in place. At the end, Susan told us that all the guides, including herself, are blind or visually impaired. It ended up being more educational/informative rather than a novelty. For all that we assume about being visually impaired, there's still a world of difference trying to live with it firsthand versus simply envisioning it. This company has multiple locations all around the world, and I'd highly recommend seeking it out so you can experience life from another perspective, even if just for an hour or so. We could all learn and be more open-minded if programs like this existed for different marginalized groups.

Dialogue in the Dark is a place where you will be led by blind guides in small groups through different surroundings without being to make use of one of the most important scenes - sight. The first time I came across with something similar was because of a movie called "About Time" where the two protagonists meet each other at a diner that is in absolute darkness. How do you pick up the fork and knife? How do you even eat when you can only rely on feelings? The progress in the movie seems rather entertaining so knowing a similar place exists in Hong Kong got me very intrigued. Located in Cheung Sha Wan, it is actually easier to access by getting off from Mei Foo MTR station. My friend and I were very excited to see what was about to happen. It was a slow day so it did not take much before it was our turn. Led by a guide, we were rather freaked out once we walked into the dark room. With blindfold and a crotch, we were left kind of scared. There were several 'tasks' that we had to accomplish in complete darkness. After the tour, we got to talk about our experiences with our blind guide. To be honest, this is definitely an eye-opener, (no pun intended) for those who are fortunate to be acquiring all those senses. It definitely makes us cherish more what we have today.

I was quite traumatized coming to Hung Hom from Guangzhou East Railway Station and thought this station was gonna be just like that. They have escalators going down to the platform of the train, rather than just stairs, which made it so much easier to travel. It is NOT fun going down long flights of stairs carrying a 50lb luggage half the size of me on top of a duffel bag and a backpack, so I am very glad I did not have to do this time as well. Finding the intercity departure trains to Guangzhou was very too and straightforward - didn't have to go through many halls and up escalators, etc. that made it very inconvenient for me.

This station allows to catch trains heading in the same direction that you are heading, but the thing is that when I do the maths (for want of a better word) it is going to be tricky.

Mong Kok Station in Hong Kong…read more We used this MTR Station the most since it was closest to two Night Markets and there were many shopping and dining opportunities nearby! It was clean and had many exits/entrances. We had to look at all map to make sure we were at the correct exit! We used our Octopus Card - the Hong Kong debit card - to tap into the train area and to tap out of the train area. Remember to load your Octopus Card with a minimum of 50 HK Dollars. We conveniently reloaded at 7-Eleven.

I'm not a tourist, I live in Sheung Wan, but this tourist thing to do is AWESOME! I kept seeing…read morethe mysterious red junk boat in the harbor from time to time, but just thought "oh a tourist thing." Which it is, but we really had a great experience of taking the Aqua Luna red junk boat from Central to Stanley on a Sunday at noon. My husband and I thought we might go over to Stanley to bump around on a Sunday as a simple summer thing to do and spend the day. We were inclined to take a cab, because we do not like lines with the bus situation. I took a peak on line to see if there was a water option on getting from Central to Stanley and Aqua Luna was the main thing that kept popping up. I am sure that there might be one or two others, for in Stanley, we saw people waiting on the docks, but based on my search on-line, there are not many options Aqua Luna offers evening harbor cruises, a Hong Kong harbour discovery tour and Stanley weekend cruises. We took the Stanley weekend cruise that departs from Central at noon every Saturday and Sunday (these are the only two options at all during a week). If you get to Central and get to the Central Piers, go to Pier 9 and you will find a Aqua Luna rep and at one of the docks down the pier a bit. Although it appeared to highly encourage an on-line booking, we simply showed up about 20 minutes early, checked in with the rep, they had space for us that day, queued up in line and we were good to go. Queuing up early is key if you wish to sit or rather lounge on the rattan couches on the open air upper floor and/or have interest in your seat selection (I believe the lower deck in fully enclosed and air conditioned, not certain though because I never went down there). Once the boat leaves the dock, the staff walk around and gather payment, which we paid by cash. We bought a one way ticket, with the intention of taking a cab back, and it cost $250HKD for one person and includes a drink. Also, know that once the boat leaves from Central Pier 9, it travels across the harbour to Tsim Sha Tsui Piblic Pier 1 for pick up those passengers at that Aqua Luna departure point before it departs for Stanley. So if you board from Tsim Sha Tsui, you get second pics on seating (because all the people from Central Pier boarded before you) and guaranteed to most likely not sit up top. It was a beautiful day, although hot. Once the boat gets going, there is a natural breeze that cools things down a bit. We were in shorts and t-shirts, which was the way to go with the heat on the boat ride. The rattan open air top level was so comfortable, relaxing and cozy as we kicked our shoes off, curled up and enjoyed our beer (juices, beer, wine, water are beverage options). The views and seeing the surrounding islands on this 90 minute voyage really is a great way to experience Hong Kong away from the hustle and bustle of urban life. We were most impressed by the staff who were all welcoming, kind, smiling, appreciative, attentive and focused on the safety of passengers at all moments, from each person who boarded the step to safely get on the boat to each person walking up and down the staircase during the trip when waters were choppy or people's sea legs were not properly underneath them. What a great experience! We would highly recommend Aqua Luna and the mysterious red junk to anyone interested in seeing Hong Kong from a different vantage point.
