Definitely take the time to take notes because the U.S.A can definitely learn something from this amazing, convenient and efficient transportation system in Hong Kong! Prine Edward seems to be the transfer station for Kwun Tong Line but also the station to get off if you are interested in doing some market shopping! Flower Market, Bird Market, Meat Market and Ladies market is located on this line! Very convenient and a short walking distance from each other! Make sure to exit B. This area also has some great food joints located nearby. Its also walking distance from the Mong Kok station as well! My first time visiting Hong Kong and I was able to go everywhere I needed by using the MTR. Never did I have to use a Taxi because the trains come every 2-3 mins and it opens super early and closes super late! Trains here are very convenient and easy to navigate, please note that during rush hours it does get crowded and people are crazy! Whoo. They push, tug and shove you to make sure they can get into the train. The signs and maps are all in English as well as Cantonese so it's really easy to get around on your own. The MTR seems to go all over the Hong Kong Island. There does seem to be a lot of walking when changing line so be prepared to walk. They are NOT lying when they say that Hong Kong has a huge population! There are people everywhere at ALL times of the day and night. So be prepared for the crowds and you may miss a train or two because of it being over crowded. Don't worry, they come very frequently! OCTOTPUS CARD: This was the BEST thing Hong Kong could have ever thought about! Get an Octopus Card as soon as you arrive and you will good after that! What is an Octopus Card you may ask? It's a card that you can store money and use on buses, trains and in convenient stores such as 7-Eleven! This saves you so much time during the boarding time. You purchase one during your stay in Hong Kong and before you depart you turn it back in and get your refunds of your deposit back when you return the card. (Not a bad deal!) TIPS FOR FIRST TIME RIDERS: When going up the escalator, walk on the left and stand on the right. This will help risk people motioning for you to move out the way and the risk of the displeasure of everyone behind you! It was clean and had many exits/entrances. We had to look at all map to make sure we were at the correct exit! We used our Octopus Card - the Hong Kong debit card - to tap into the train area and to tap out of the train area. Remember to load your Octopus Card with a minimum of 50 HK Dollars. We conveniently reloaded at 7-Eleven.

Hung Hom Station is just one stop south of this station. You can also go from this station all the way to the border between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China. The location of the station is very convenient as it is connected to Grand Century Place shopping mall. If you need to get to MTR Mong Kok Station from here, take the Grand Century Place exit and walk across the footbridge above the streets from Mong Kok to get to that station. The inside of this station has a few shops, but relatively few compared to other stations nearby. This is more of a station you take to visit Mong Kok itself or walk to get to Mong Kok Station to take another train elsewhere. I like the convenience of this station. It is not as crowded as Mong Kok Station so if you need to head to Mong Kok, I would recommend using this station if you can. It is far less chaotic.

The Octopus card is a great service, especially for tourists. They have different branches…read morethroughout Hong Kong, but I used the one at the airport when I first arrived. The card is like a debit card, except that you don't need to sign for it and they don't ask for an ID. There's a $50HK deposit that you get back when you turn the card in. You preload the card and use the card as cash. You can use it for the metro, bus, ferries, stores, fast food places, almost anywhere. You put it up to the scanner and it deducts from the card. There's no signature or ID needed. Whatever you don't use, you can get back when you turn the card in. The positive is that it's very convenient. I would just bring this card with me to the 7-11 by the hotel and just scan it. I didn't need to look for change for the bus or deal with the metro machines for transportation. The negative is that it's treated like cash, so if you lose your card you won't get your money back. I put just enough so that it would last me a few days. When the amount got low, I would deposit money at 7-11 or at the metro stops.

There is a fee for the card which is refundable upon return of the card and acts primarily as a debit for convenience stores, subways, and buses. Also, gives minor discounts from general fare and some nicer discounts for seniors. Any funds unused can be refunded back to you. You don't really need to overload it. Octopus Card reload machines are relatively easy to find in any subway station or 7-11. Was very happy that it save us time since we were a really large group using public transit and primarily a group of senior citizens so it made dealing with fees very seamless and headache free! Highly recommend.
