Well not that it really matters coz I never trust these ratings anyway. I brought my Japanese friends here for yumcha lunch today and we had a really good meal. Service was excellent, waiters were polite and attentive, smart and made good suggestions. Good thing is that they have Japanese translations on the menu so my friends had a say in what they want to eat. They're famous for their Chinese delicacies like shark fin, bird nest, abalone... We weren't into that so we skipped all of those pages on the menu and went directly to order dim sums. Everything was good - like, everything! The one special thing which I absolutely recommend everyone to order is their version of 炸兩 which they call it 金包銀絲腸粉. It has shredded turnip and some other stuff in it - comes with a small bottle of soy sauce to pour over and guess what - the soy sauce was warm, how thoughtful are they! The skin of the fried bit is so thin and crispy, just so tasty I don't even know how to describe it. Note that this is an expensive restaurant - it was about 300 per person for yumcha lunch - no alcohol no fancy delicacies and only basic yumcha dishes - but for a Michelin star fine dining canto restauranti, I much prefer this to lung king heen at four seasons.

Each bowl of noodles is like 48HKD, which is leaning on the expensive side, especially for such unpretentious food. But it's right by sai Kung harbour which has turned bustling with people, and it's not a sleepy fisherman's town like before. (But you can still buy fish from a boat- freshly caught so no worries!) The good news is that there are improvements to the service and actual Shanghainese fare, which deserves a review update and another star. Their soup dumplings (小籠包) can be inconsistent for skin thickness but the broth is retained. Instead of the full order of 10, a half order of 5 dumplings can be ordered. Their Shanghai noodles (上海粗炒麵) have better flavor than before, the string beans with pork (四季豆) are nicely charred, the crystal shrimp (水晶蝦仁) are also tasty, the edamame (雪菜毛豆炒豆干) and the stir fried rice cakes (炒年糕) are tasty. Service is spotty, but this is to be expected. During the wee hours of the night, it feels like there are more staff than customers. In terms of languages, English is limited, Mandarin is doable, but Cantonese is still king. (#2) That said, there is an English menu available here. Lunch and late night (#3) are still my favorite times to visit. While the outside awning has been updated in the last few years, most of the interior has not. The vibe is considerably old school and bring plenty of cash. The pot stickers had mixed review from the table. Some of us were not fan of the chewy texture (pot stickers shouldn't be that chewy). I like how well they were pan fried though. In the end it's all about texture lol. We were also split on the red bean pancake. The oldies felt it hasn't improved at all in the past 5 decades. The young folks thought it was good. Anyway, long story short this place is really a high 3*. Service was good. Food came out quick. Locals love it. Cash or Octopus card only. I would've given this a 4* if the XLBs came out better. Tatler magazine is for Western tastes and sure enough, on any given night you'll find more Caucasian faces than Asians. Most dishes are solid; they retain some heat, lots of oil, but I think there are better options for Szechuan if you aren't looking for a fancy spot. Sijie Private Kitchen is homely and authentic ( delicious and very hot, they only tone down if you request), Or Yu restaurant is a good quick place that doesn't compromise on its spiciness. The prices at Red Pepper will also make you shriek, a dish is around Hkd 150, double of what you will pay at an average Chinese restaurant. While it may be justifiable for the very nice decor and the opportunity to dine in a heritage restaurant in Hong Kong ( Bruce Leeee), if you aren't looking for a tourist experience I advise going to a more ghetto, uncompromising place that will muffle your shrieks with sichuan peppers.
