Review #300 is dedicated to a very special dish - The Drunken Squab…read more "Drunken" poultry is a famous Shanghainese delicacy that is often served as a cold appetizer. Drunken chicken is the most popular dish and is readily available even in the US, especially in areas like the SGV. Drunken squab is a lot more difficult to find in the US. Heck... just any good and fresh (not frozen) squab is hard enough to find in the US. Despite its name, this dish won't make you drunk, as the proper way of preparing it is to boil the wine first before using it as a marinade so that all the alcohol is evaporated, and the wine is properly reduced. Also, boiling the wine with some coarse sea salt and spices greatly enhances its flavor. The drunken squab here at Wu Kong was the best one that I have ever had. Period. The squab itself was fresh and the meat was flavorful. It was perfectly cooked so that the meat was tender. It was marinated perfectly so that the wine enhanced the natural flavor of the meat rather than overwhelming it. The wine was high quality premium stuff - very smooth and gentle to the palate -- and it was reduced properly to produce a rich flavor. This is a squab lover's dream come true. Before I forget... Everything else that we ordered were good. XLB's - They had the largest juice pockets of any XLB's that I've ever had. Each one contained at least one to two large soup spoonfuls of juices. The best way to eat them is to wait for it to cool down a bit (so you won't burn your tongue) and eat it in one bite. If you must take more than one bite, eat it over a small bowl so you won't lose those yummy and precious juices. Fried Dumplings - Also very very juicy. Be careful when you bite into it so that the juices don't squirt out. Scallion Pancakes - They were quite unique and were shaped like a donut rather than the thin pancake style generally found in the US. They were absolutely yummy, pan-fried to golden brown on the outside, moist and slightly chewy inside. Amazing. Cold Noodles - A great idea on a hot summer day! It was beautifully presented with 3 types of shredded meat on top and came with a nice setting of sauces, which included chili paste, a sweet soy sauce, peanut sauce, sesame oil, etc. Shanghainese Chili Stir Fry - Sweet and mildly spicy hot, this could be served with noodles, steamed rice, steamed buns (man tow) or scallion pancakes. Absolutely yummy and authentically Shanghainese! This place is quite expensive ($$$) but I assure you that it's worth every penny. If you decide to open up your wallet and spoil yourself with some of the best Shanghainese cuisine in the World, then this is the place. A solid 5-star experience, even by Hong Kong's high standard of Asian cuisine.

Shanghai Min is indeed one of more high-end Chinese restaurants, but the food is solid. The menu is an impressive hard-cover bound book with glossy photogenic photos that make you want to order everything. I would recommend in particular the 生煎包 and the salad, plus honorable mention to the broiled chicken soup. 1) It must be no surprise that the 生煎包 (pan fried soup dumplings) is good since it is is a Shanghai dish, but it was a surprise how good it was! This was actually the first place I ever had 生煎包, which is unfortunate because now I can't eat it anywhere else without being disappointed. At Shanghai Min, their 生煎包 have the perfect fluffy bread, which is more steamed than fried so it is not greasy at all. Inside its a tasty pork and soup filling, so it is like a giant XLB in 包 form and sprinkled with some sesame and green onion (though they fall off so it's almost more just for decoration). The caveat? This giant fresh ball of deliciousness is steaming hot on the inside, so you need to wait awhile to avoid the dilemma of biting into the amazing dumpling, almost burning your mouth, but having to slurp up the soup anyway so that it won't go to waste. (Or maybe that's just me being extreme when I discover something tasty) 2) Salad?! I know this is the last item you would expect to be recommended at a fancy Chinese restaurant, but it's actually really good! For a long while Taiwanese cuisine has been popular amongst the local community; not only food,…read moreeven beverages like bubble tea has been beloved by the locals for many years; so popular that there is literally more bubble tea shops than supermarkets. Bafang Yunji continued the trend of Taiwanese fever and introduced another form of Taiwanese goodness into Hong Kong. Originally focus mainly on dumpling, now Bafang has incorporated more elements into their chains. Before going into the other food options, i think their dumpling is totally worth mentioning. With four distinct flavors for people to choose from, Bafang offers cabbage, chinese chives, Kimchi and curry flavored dumplings served either pan seared or steamed. For those who enjoy the contrasting texture of crisp crisp crust and juicy interior should definitely go for the pan seared option whereas for people who concern more above their daily calorie intake should opt for steamed dumplings. You will be surprised by the amount of juice each dumpling holds whenever you bite into it; pretty much like any pastries with juicy interior, you are best warned not to gobble through them as you are very likely to burn your mouth. Other than dumplings, Bafang now also serve Taiwanese beef noodels as well as miswa with pork intestines. I would say the former is not as astoundingly good as I have had better ones, but the miswa was quite up to standard. You can taste the katsuobushi that is used to make the broth; this very definition of umami makes it basically unstoppable once you have a spoonful of the miswa soup. Typically the taiwanese would add garlic and vinegar into the soup, this adds an extra dimension to the soup and makes it much lighter and refreshing. Out of curiosity I have tried the authentic Bafang in Taiwan and is totally taken aback by the fact that the chain in Hong Kong is no match to the indigenous version of the store; yet the Hong Kong version of it would still serve as a qualify candidate to ease my home sickness of Taiwan.

No but certainly really good!). I'm a little disappointed that they removed the String Beans sautéed in salted egg yolk, that dish was amazing and one of the reasons why I had wanted to return for a 2nd visit. However, they have managed to salvage something similar in a combo of "tiger shrimp w/ string beans sautéed in salted egg yolk". Get that! The other stand outs - steamed egg white cooked w/ dry scallops! The Peking Duck cooked 2 ways (Peking duck & diced) - the lettuce wrap was really good! Get the "doe sha bao!" Mid price range - definitely cheaper than NYC for a meal with over 10 dishes! Service is good - attentive and gives you tissues & wet wipes!! (Running joke in Hong Kong! LOL) Make a reservation - located within the Olympian City complex - lots of queues so do the smart thing and call ahead!

The restaurant itself is comfortably and elegantly appointed with seafoam greens, beige and lots of natural light from the windows that overlook the harbor. The room seems more upscale than what I can only say often seems like a dated feel with worn soft goods (ie chairs, carpets, curtains) that I feel from many traditional Chinese restaurants. Our server was exceptionally kind, friendly, informative and attentive. Although the room is touch upscale compared to other restaurants, we were casually dressed. The food was spectacular. Not everything, but portions of the menu were in English, but there are no photos of the food. The special menu items for the hairy crab season is only in Chinese. We really ate many items that came from the special hairy crab menu, including dumplings, noodles, a whole crab itself. There was one dish that was a shanghai noodle, mixed with crab and almost had the look of macaroni and cheese (just no cheese). It might be the best dish I have tasted since my time in Hong Kong. We also ordered the onion pancake and potstickers. This was my first hairy crab experience in general and this place was a safe harbor to do just that! I am not sure if my 5 star rating is due to the hairy crab menu and that experience or if I would rate it equally as high if we were there on some random Saturday in September.
