This place sells itself with authentic Korean BBQ. The atmosphere is decent, but the seating is pretty tight, especially when five people got seated around a small round table. There is barely space to put our plates, let alone all the bbq items! For the bbq, there is a good selection of meats. Alas, some of them were a bit chewy and stringy, and wasn't quite top notch. Apart from meats, we also got a few other items to share. There was a beef bone soup, which was delicious, steamed egg, and a hot pot that came after the bbq. The hot pot is called the "troop's pot", and apparently resembles what the Korean troops would eat -- a bunch of minced beef, spam, mushrooms, veggies and a slice of cheese (one slice!) thrown into a kimchi-laced broth. There are many kinds of Korean drinks you can fetch from the coolers, so make sure you try some of them! Also, they have delicious banchan. Kimchi and the baby bok choy was our favourite. All in all, I would say this place is pretty good, but it left much to be desired. Everything would be better with a little bit of improvement, and the staff could use a little additional training in Cantonese (they only speak English and Korean) ;)

Service was ... alright for Hong Kong standard (efficiency prioritized over hospitality). The menu was nice, had a large array of selections, and filled with pictures of their recommended items. It is like a suburban "Venice" untouched by time. Minus the nasty pigeon poop on San Marcos Square, and US$20 cappucinos and $50 Bellini's. And probably one of the last surviving parts that are still doing a few things the old school way. If you think sun drying clothes is a bit too old world, then your nose may be offended when you smell the pungent dried and fermented shrimp blocks and shrimp pastes when you walk to the factory shops that sell this stuff! Salted fish has nothing on dried and fermented shrimp condiment. Vietnamese fish sauce comes close in that precious flavor profile. Ditto for Vietnamese style fermented fish flavoring used to season pork blood cubes. So if you are into that stuff, chances are you might appreciate fermented shrimp products here and feel right at home. So this restaurant eatery 大澳橫水渡小廚 in Tai O is much like most other places that offer home local style cooked food and dishes. It's not the best looking, but it can be quite remarkable if you know what to order. So much to eat so little time. Ended up braving this place and tried something very fermented, salty, proteiny, and carby. 咸鮮籠仔荷葉飯 (Ham seen lung hai hor yeep fan) 咸鮮 = salted freshness. Basically sun dried salted seafood 籠仔荷葉飯 = rice steamed in lotus leaf, in a bamboo steamer But what they actually put in we were quite surprised with What appeared to be pork jowl/pork cheek/pork neck, dried white fishlings, scallions, and of course fermented shrimp paste (and maybe some cooked/melted fermented shrimp block), and a believe a little bit of squid tentacles. The ingredients are not expensive, although this steamer cost HK$118 which a tad high. But you are getting an original taste of the land. This feeds 6 nicely if you are ordering a variety of dishes to try. Otherwise even one order split across 4 people is more than enough. Save your valuable quota for lots of other fantastic bites in the village.

We called Tai O Crossing Boat Restaurant to check if they were open, and they offered to stay open to accommodate us. We were greeting by an extremely friendly, charismatic man called "Uncle Ray" who chatted with us about everything from his time in the States to his children. We really enjoyed him! The food was delicious! We tried the flat noodles with beef, the steamed choi sum with pickled veggies, the steamed pork patty, and the young chow fried rice - every dish was great. I would highly recommend any of them! My only slight complaint is that the food was a bit expensive, but the service and taste made up for the slightly high prices.

For food, we started with a salmon sashimi, avocado and softshell crab roll and uni roll to share. The salmon sashimi was served on a bed of ice, which was a nice touch to the presentation. It was really fresh and fatty, almost melting in my mouth. The avocado and softshell crab roll was also delicious. It's crispy and flavorful and I like that there's more filling than rice. The uni roll was unexpectedly disappointing, however. It was not fresh at all and the portion was really small for its price. For our mains, I got an eel rice. I felt that this dish was well executed because the eel sauce tasted delicious but it wasn't over powering. I can definitely still taste the eel, which was fresh, flavorful and succulent. We also got two lunch sets, the assorted tempura set and the beef udon set. These individually come with different items as part of the set lunch, such as miso soup, and/or sashimi and California roll. Overall, a solid place for quality Japanese food. Other than the uni roll, there are no complaints! The service and quality has been pretty consistent over the years, so I'll be coming back whenever I visit Hong Kong!

The sushi, sashimi, seafood, and specialty items are done by ordering through a QR Code on your phone. You can order as much as you want, but there's a time limit of 2 hours. At around an hour or so, they'll pass by with the bill. No rush, but it's a reminder that your time is ticking! We had a fabulous time eating at this buffet/AYCE spot! The seafood is fresh and prepared nicely. For the price, you can't beat it! Definitely check this out if you're in HK and wanna feast!!

You ever get that feeling when you walk past a place and you're like "Whoa! I can't afford this!"…read more Kikusan is like that. First of all, it's in one of the most expensive malls in one of the most expensive districts in one of the most expensive places in the world (Landmark, Central, Hong Kong). Secondly, it's an amalgamation of some of the more pricey cuisines: Japanese and Tapas, or trendily known as Japas. Thirdly, it looks like a contemporary art museum. But, never would I have imagined that here, I can not only have an affordable meal, but get one of the best valued dishes I've ever had! The signature Kikusan roll: 8 pieces of tuna filled sushi roll, topped with a whole slab of uni, green onions, and lots of salmon roe. All of my favourite things in a generous quantity for HKD $68. According to today's exchange rate, that's CAD $10.94. You usually get 8 pieces of California roll at that price (Kikusan's California Roll is actually $88). The same amount of uni at a supermarket easily costs 2-3x as much. The roll itself is mild, but still flavourful. There aren't any crazy flavour bursts, but it all works together well. The uni didn't have as much uni flavour as I would've liked but hey...$68. Really. The green onions added sharpness to cut through the smooth tuna and the little exploding roe provided bursts of sweetness. The Kikusan Roll was all about balance. By contrast, the Chili Sesame & Peanut Soup Ramen with Minced Pork and Layered Pork Cutlet was very in-your-face flavour-wise, and delicious in a whole other way! The pork cutlet had a hint of sake and the spice was at a perfect level of heat. My theory is that the Kikusan Roll is one of those loss leader things because it definitely drew me to this restaurant. The strategy seems to be working well. At 12:10pm, the queue was making an S in front of the entrance. Everyone was ordering things that range from sushi to dim sum in this Asian fusion restaurant, with dishes on average ranging from $60 to well above $100. It's much easier to get in as a group of 2, so my advice would be to split up your big group if you don't mind sitting apart. They've also got a dim sum takeout counter for those not willing to battle the line. Would you come to Kikusan for the best Japanese food? No, not even close. But it's where you go when you want to impress your out-of-town, non-Japanese friends. It's where you go when you want to feel a little fancier without spending the kind of dollars you usually spend at Landmark. They were some of the best dumplings I'd ever had in my life - so good that I'm considering going back again just for those, and I'm thinking about them even the day after!! My friends ordered the eel on rice, veggie dumplings, assorted tempura, and salmon sashimi. The tempura, especially the kakiage, was great. The sashimi was very fresh & they give you nice thick pieces. I also had the Japanese mojito which was very refreshing. I took off 1 star because one of the servers got a little defensive when I told her she mixed up my order.
