I came quite nervous about all this; I don't know Cantonese very well and I don't know the area. And yet, it was all so simple. One of the owners simply escorted me to the local fish market, and together we filled up two bags of live fish, shrimp, and clams (approx. $100). Back at the restaurant, I just took a seat as the cooks did their thing, turning out three excellent, simple dishes (approx. $200). The experience was both surreal and comforting, and made the trek to Cheung Chau the most memorable day of the trip. If I could, I would go here again and again!

As chance would have it, a friend and I decided to meet up for lunch and we picked Cafeholic due to the proximity to our offices. When we arrived, there was already several parties waiting in line ahead of us. We received a number from the front desk and waited about 10 minutes before we were called for a table. The table setting is simple, with utensils in a small basket on the side and a stack of napkins (YES A RARITY IN HONG KONG), salt and pepper, and a tall bottle of mint water with water glasses. I love this as it eliminates the need to ask for refills of water in a busy restaurant (something I wish Tsui Wah would do too as flagging their servers is such a chore). After we made our lunch selections from their lunch set menu, two bowls of soup appeared in one minute. Ta da! I think it was cream of carrot. Hearty and filling, good for a cold winter day. Within 15 minutes, our mains were served - Deep fried chicken with Japanese curry and Omurice and a side salad. Wow. Presentation was good and portion size quite generous. The dressing for the side salad was good too! Not just your plain balsamic vinaigrette. I wanted more! This all for HK$79, with coffee/milk tea/lemon tea. My wallet and tummy are happy! Will be back to try the other items on the menu. They also have a la carte during dinner.

The dishes were small shareable plates so we just shared everything. Here are some of the standout dishes at our table that pleased everyone: Fried Tofu: They said that the tofu came straight from Japan and was put straight into the fryer. So the nice crispy shell is the tofu itself. It was indeed tasty without any additives. Pork Belly: Simple and grilled to perfection with a slight sear. Flavors of most fatty meat come out nicely and this one was no exception. Fried rice with soft boiled egg: What an interesting take on fried rice... with a Japanese styled soft boiled egg. IMO, you can add that soft boiled egg to almost anything and it would make it better. This was a perfect combo (and also a perfect compliment to the stiff drinks they were serving). Japanese gin: we all know Japanese whiskey is top notch. I had never tried a Japanese gin until this night. Just had it with a touch of tonic and it was really smooth. Give it a shot (pun intended). We tried a bunch of other dishes and all were pretty much spectacular. We liked the vibe and the attentiveness and courtesy of the staff. The entire restaurant was also treated to show where they flame up a fish in a traditional Japanese way (I'm guessing... don't quote me on that). Then they serve the fish to each of the tables. This restaurant is part of the Tai Po Mega Mall complex, and it's convenient that these restaurants have been grouped together. I found the pho to not be very flavorful. I also found that the lack of condiments available to our table was very inauthentic. That being said, this place is not the worst offender when it comes to "Vietnamese" food in Hong Kong.

The herbs and star anise adds good flavour to the broth. Deep Fried Shrimp Cake ($38) freshly made so hot and tasty. I would order that again! Service was fast, friendly and efficient. They also have delicious dinner dishes, especially the paper covered pork and the three bean pudding for dessert.

At the recommendation of the staff I added the cheese course which is actually a cheese ice cream. 1) pumpkin - the first item that came out was an amuse bouche. A power punch of a bite where the pumpkin really shines through. 2) Soda bread- This tastes quite like a muffin. The bread is made fresh in house daily. The butternut is paired with is really high quality and had to use some self control not to eat all of it. 3) Grilled salad (Recommend) - This dish is really tasty. The vegetables are sourced locally and you can really taste the freshness. There is an option to add shaved truffle here. We didn't and didn't regret it as the truffle flavor is usually really strong and j think would over power the veggies. 4) Pigs head terrine (Recommend) - I'm typically not a fan of terrines and cold preparations of meat dishes in general. However, this dish is really flavorful and the pork has a real depth to it. The pork flavor is real strong so if you don't like gamey meat this might not be for you but I really enjoyed it. The brioche it was paired with was also really nice. Crafted in a cinnamon roll type of shape you get some nice textural component from the bread which helps offset the texture of the meat. 5) Cod (Recommend) - The fish was cooked perfectly. Really refined dish which clearly showcases the fish. 6) Duck - The Duck is prepared two ways. One as a seared duck breast with skin on and the other as a the meat component to a purée. The breast was slightly tough but overall I still enjoyed it. The sauce it came with was very good. The purée was slightly too rich for me but it was tasty. If it was a larger portion it would have been to much. 7) Cheese course (Recommended) - At first blush the description of the dish doesn't sound appealing, but this is definitely worth a try. It was my favorite dish of the night. The cheese ice cream uses cheese sourced from the UK. Cheese flavor is subtle and not too overpowering. The sweetness from the raspberry sauce on the bottom was a nice balance to the dish. 8) Apple tart- The apple tart was nice and delicate. The juniper ice cream was an interesting pairing which gave some earthy notes to the dish. Really good and would definitely order again. 9) Stout ice cream - Like the name implies the ice cream has a sour beer taste to it. Definitely not for everyone but if you like that taste you will enjoy this because the beer flavor comes through. The ice cream is paired with burnt milk crisps which I thought were the star of the dish. I really enjoyed my meal here. The food is great and the service was good.
