First review of 2016 (Time to do another 2016 100 review challenge I guess?!)…read more I really should review this place as I'm there almost once or twice a week. So what was the big attraction of this place? For me it was the Sichuan Dan Dan Noodles (四川擔擔麵) which tastes quite authentic according to many sichuan friends (I haven't been to Sichuan province yet, but it is on my list. Maybe this year is the year who knows?!). You know its so good that they've got a write up on the dish and have put up the prices multiple times in the last 6 months. Also it's not very expensive so you that also warrants multiple visits in a week - lets hope the prices don't go up too much. The levels of spiciness is also quite authentic (on par with sichuan restaurants on the mainland, which I guess is close enough to the real deal. For my frame of reference - I've been to Sichuan restaurants in Shanghai which was recommended by Sichuan friends so I guess I know what I'm tasting). For the real deal, get 3 or 4 chillies, and then wash it down with some soy juice (豆奶). Though I guess if you were going in a large group, you might have to wait a little as the place is small. If you go on your own, you can almost walk in without waiting.

I'm glad I didn't choose the mysterious ones cuz my mom said it was bitter veggies that were supposed to be good for you, but on this day I wanted to be satisfied instead of being healthy. So I chose one that had lamb and pork meat and it was so delicious even though the shape was a lot different than the appearance I was used to. But it's okay it's the inside that counts and the inside was yummy.

Truly one of the better seafood restaurants in Sai Kung. But, be warned, it is very expensive…read more The first thing to know is that Loaf On is not one of those touristy spots on the water. There isn't a pretty view of the sea. Instead, you will walk up two flights of very narrow stairs to a pleasant dining area and excellent service. The walls are decorated with their Michelin one star awards over the years, which is an accomplishment. My wife and I came for lunch. The set price lunches have a lot of food, but cost just under $3000 for two. I didn't need a banquet. So, I skipped that. Instead, we shared fried tofu as an appetizer. It was hot, creamy and light. Definitely the right choice. Then we shared grouper prepared two ways as the second course. A wise decision. It was delicious, had contrast, and emphasized the fresh fish flavor. That cost $880, but well worth it. Much better than the seafood places nearby.

Another restaurant in HK awarded 1 Michelin Star. The food is cooked well, nothing fancy but like…read morewhat a good homecook can do - however it costs way more even compared to neighboring restaurants. I'm guessing because we're paying for the Michelin Star, and the cleaner, inside, tableclothed setting. I can attest they also have clean washrooms! I have to dock a star though because of all the nickel and diming they do even after charging more for their dishes (e.g. higher tea charge at HKD $18/pp but at least they exempted my toddler, another HKD $10 for providing 2 wet naps, for market priced dishes they charge not by dish for prep but by number of people at the table, etc). The server also gave my mom some attitude when she asked to see the Mantis Shrimp we ordered live before cooking (which is usual for Chinese restaurants to check the freshness and size), and said bluntly that they're already cooking it. We came to try how they do their Mantis Shrimp so that was the star of our lunch. We had it prepped fried with garlic, pepper, salt. My hubby liked the natural sweetness in the meat. I found it just OK. We ordered the Fried Tofu with Chili and Garlic that others seem to enjoy, again hubby liked it, I found it OK. It came on a pile of orange rice crisps that had no flavor and added nothing to the dish. Our last dish was the Braised Pork Belly with Pickled Vegetables which was pretty good with ample meat that was very filling. My favorite of the 3 dishes. For a restaurant located on Sai Kung's Seafood Street, its also interesting that they're famous for their Crispy Skin Chicken, which you have to reserve in advance or you're out of luck if you try to order it there. We did not reserve ahead... :/ When looking for the restaurant, note that they are on a street not overlooking the waters and have no fishtank display outside to show you their fresh produce like their neighbors. So keep an eye out for their signage. Their dining area is up a flight of narrow stairs but I think they might have a table or 2 on the street level though I didn't get to see since they directed us upstairs though an outside entrance. Service wise, at least they carried our stroller up for us.

Having walked by this restaurant many times, as well as having tried some of desserts from their storefront, I'm not sure why I never went in to try their food before. Kampoeng is located downstairs from their mini market at street level. Surprisingly its quite large once you enter the restaurant downstairs! Also somewhat nicely decorated. We tried the Nasi Campur Rendang, which was basically a meat dish with three different types of curry, with some vegetables, and rice. And the Nasi Campur Kampoeng, which was Chicken mixed rice. I gotta say that both dishes were pretty good! Having eaten at a few other Indonesian restaurants nearby, this one was the most tasty. The chicken was very tender and full of flavor. The Rendang was also quite good, being served with three different curries was a nice touch. Overall Kampoeng is a pretty decent place for Indonesian food. A restaurant with plenty of space is also a rare find in Hong Kong, so I will definitely come back here on a hard-to-find-dinner night!

Albeit a little spicier than the one at Sabah, but the meat is so tender and delicious you just forgive the spiciness all together. We also ordered the Soto Ayam (Indonesian chicken noodle soup) and it was perfect to warm myself up when the weather's cooling down, and whilst recovering from a cold. It had a tinge of spice in it, despite it claiming to be non-spicy on the menu. There is so many options on the menu, I look forward to returning.
