Loved this bakery in Hong Kong.
This was the first treat stop along our Hong Kong Like A Local City Tour with Jacky from This Is Asia Tours. Kowloon is filled with so many amazing bakeries and it was fun to start with this one trying Jacky's favorite childhood treats.
Kee Wah Bakery started in 1938 as a simple grocery store on Shanghai Street. During the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong during WWII, Mr. Wong created treats for his neighbors using an old barrel as an oven. After the war, he was able to expand his family business and eventually open a second location. Over the next few decades, he grew his family business into an international brand with locations in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China and the United Stated. Mr. Wong ran his business until 1999 when has passed away at the age of 88. It is still family run today by his children and grandchildren.
The turtle bread was so light and airy. The Chinese sweet crispies are like a lighter and much less sticky version of rice Krispy treats. Made with flour, eggs, and sesame with a touch of honey, they are addictively delicious.
Their gift boxes are a great way to bring a taste of Hong Kong back to family and friends. The mini bus, mini tram and mini ferry tins filled with panda, penguin and koala cookies are so cute. The mini wedding cakes are delicious, too.
Lots of locations throughout Hong Kong. Kee Wah Bakery is great for a sweet treat or a souvenir to bring back from Hong Kong. read more
