Not to my surprise, Tokyo Tsukiji is one of those restaurants that greet customers in unison in Japanese as they're being led to their seats. I sat at a tiny table, which was just right for my one bowl of ramen with streaky pork fillet (hk$68). I'm honestly really not a big eater but I think the portion could've just increased a tad bit for those with an average appetite. Ramen lovers will be happy to know Tsukiji also serves tsukemen. However, udon is also an available option. But if noodles don't tickle your fancy, just know the restaurant has various rice bowls and appetizers to choose from.

The Tokyo Tsukiji franchise hails from the Ramen Motherland of Japan, and there are already several throughout Hong Kong already. This location in Tin Shui Wai recently opened and was mobbed. On a Monday evening at about 7pm, we waited at least half an hour for a table...and were finished eating within half an hour. The menu is simple. You get clear broth ramen, angry-looking red broth (spicy) ramen, or "big" ramen. If you don't like ramen you're screwed. Oh, but there are also little apps, such as dumplings, edamame, grilled fish. There is also a selection of dessert-y type drinks and sweets. Despite the wait, the Manager (owner?) was very gracious in offering the people waiting minute cups of Coke, so we could get further hyped up about the fact that the wait was taking forever. After the standard Japanese greeting, we were shown to our seats. Service became lackadaisical after that. Sure, it was busy, but our server seemed nonchalant and only took our orders after we got up to tackle her. There were four of us and she took down only three ramen orders...for which we had to hail her down again and have her repeat our orders back to us. Two of us had the pork ramen with what we think is squid ink (the dish is written in Chinese and English, but the description is in Japanese). At least, staring at our oil-spill of a broth, we'd hoped it was squid ink. Another one had the EXTRA LARGE pork ramen, and another the spicy ramen. All of us were very happy with our choices. The pork had been cooked within an inch of my life and could have been fed to someone with no teeth. The ramen had just the right amount of "Q" (springy-ness, al-dente-ness?), and the broth, though on the salty side, was incredibly rich and full of flavor. It was one of the best goddamn bowls of pork ramen I've ever had any where. And at only HKD65. The EXTRA LARGE ramen was kind of a rip off, with only slightly more noodles and LARGER slices of pork. (We felt like EXTRA LARGE LOSERS for ordering it.) We'd also had some grilled fish and Agedashi tofu, which was perfectly done, with a sauce that was a little on the vinegary side. The portions are just adequate for someone watching their diet, and for most people a little side app is probably needed. The person who ordered the EXTRA LARGE was still hungry afterwards. Still, a nice option for a quick and easy meal or snack.
