The noodles are either served dry(without soup) or with soup. Given how hot Hong Kong gets I opt for the dry noodles. I made my way into Quarry Bay one cool morning. It did take me a good hour to get there, but nevertheless, I stumbled upon some unique stops enroute to Mian. It's nestled on a smaller street, and it's hard to miss, situated next to a coffee shop. The decor is hip and modern, and clean. Although their menu had other noodle items, I knew I had to get the braised brisket with the 'chinese pappardelle' lo mein. It was exactly how I envisioned it to be. The 2cm thick pappardelle made with duck egg had the perfect texture. The al dente texture complimented the sauce well; it was coated with the slighty sweet soy sauce of the beef. I savoured every bite, and wanted more of the noodles. This place is worth the trek, the quality of the noodles and the meat are stand outs, and one can always explore Quarry Bay afterwards.

It is a rice noodle restaurant were you can customize what sides you want to add, level of spiciness, and type of soup broth. My friend ordered the sweet and spicy soup broth for me and it was bombbb! I had the schezuan broth the first time and it was way to spicy for me to handle! So, if you like mala (numbing spice) then go with schezuan! As for my sides, I added beef, pickles, minced pork, and chicken. You can add as many sides as you want for only 5rmb which is less than $1usd. If I can recall, I believe each bowl was around 19rmb ($3usd) which is so incredibly cheap! Be sure to arrive before dinner time because it tends to get packed here, so you will be waiting at least 20 minutes for a seat. Also, don't be alarmed if the waitress seats you with other parties. I learned that it's normal to share tables!

For the street eats loving crowds of Sai Yeung Choi Street, it was only natural to include J&G Fried Chicken into the mix. Considering Taiwanese superstar Hot Star's proximity relative to this stall, it's clear the competition in Mongkok is stiff. But the real question is: How is the chicken? In terms of crispiness, the job is bang up quality and is super reminiscent of chicken I've had in Taiwan. The meat is tender and the crust is not too crispy. This is sort of like that good ol American chain (#1) with the texture and taste. Aim for the nuggets and graduate from there to the bigger options. And of course, they offer some really tasty drinks to boot. Some are tea based and the others are fruit based, but all in all they make for quench worthy drinks in any hot weather situation. Plus, they pair well with the chicken itself. Prices are affordable and J&G accepts the Octopus Card. The service is pretty decent. Just remember that in this district, English may not get one far here. As always in Kowloon, Canto rules. _________ (#1) Rhymes with Clique Gourmet. Or Click Fillet.

You can also customize your level of spiciness to your own taste. Order sizes come in small, medium, and large. I ordered the large size which was HK$50 for approximately 25 pieces, which was the perfect snack size for two people while wandering the Ladies Market. My spiciness level was supposed to be at 10%, but I found it a bit too spicy for certain bites, because the seasoning was not evenly distributed. This particular location has only 2 food items and 3 drink choices. It's more of an express location, which does not carry the usual fried chicken filet or wings. Each chicken snack comes inside a paper bag, inside a plastic bag. They will give you wooden sticks to use as skewers for the chicken. There is no seating available like most food stalls in Mongkok and they fry the chicken in small batches, so you may be waiting for at least 5 minutes for your order. The cold drinks available were iced plum tea, fruit tea, and cold brewed tea at only HK$14 each. They were cold and refreshing for the hot day. Next time, I will try the other J&G location in Mongkok which offers a few more of the chicken options to get a bit more variety, but the nuggets are still my favorite fried snack!

The guys ordered the Tibetan-style dry beef noodles in garlic sauce (HK$42) and I opted for the beef noodle soup (HK$38). The food was served very promptly, within 5 mins of placing the order! And my my, was my noodle soup piping hot!! Mhmmm super warm and hearty, with a generous serving of coriander. WINNING. THAT BROTH THOUGH, HOLY COW. Very very flavorful. It reminds of the soup at the end of hot pot when everything's been cooked in it. Just like that. Full of beef flavor. I loveeeee. For the dry noodles with garlic sauce, it reminds me of tsukemen, where the broth came on the side. It's the same broth used for the noodle soup but a tad saltier. I saw the chili pepper next to this item on the menu so was hesitant about ordering it. But I tried a bit of my friend's and it wasn't too spicy at all! I'll definitely return for it! (And will need to return for the other skewers and cumin fried chicken wings!!) How much did we spend among four people? HK$205. What a STEAL! Around HK$50 per person. Too bad what is happening there now but when one of my friends who have been there told me he has found a place that reminds him of his trip to Tibet, I have to give it a try. I have never tried Tibetan food before so honestly I did not have any expectations whatsoever, I went with a open heart and let it surprise me. The place is really small with only a few tables (outdoor seating as well if you do not mind the heat). There is nothing fancy about the décor here but I have seen quite a lot of happy customers here so I think my friend has recommended a rather nice place. Since he has been to Tibet and (supposedly) knows more about its food, I just let me order. He ordered signature noodles with muttons and beef for me. After a while the food was served. One of the staff came to us (maybe I did look like I was not in my element) and told us before we ate, we should smell it first. And we did. I could not really describe that but it was rather special, in a good way. The staff told us that for Tibetan food, it is very common to use something called "Ground Cumin" that has a very distinct aroma to it. And then I had a bite of the mutton, which was not so chewy and it went so well with the soup. I enjoyed my very first Tibetan food very much and since I do not know when I can finally go to Tibet, I guess I will come here again.
