Since…read moreI didn't get my HK Style French Toast from Australia Dairy Company the other day, I was excited to try it here. Kam Wah Cafe is also famous for their freshly baked Pineapple Bun and Butter. Can't start your day without some HK Milk Tea and Iced Ovaltine. My son said it's a good thing the nai cha in the states are not as good because he was starting to develop an addiction. Lol. For those of you who don't know, it's made with Ceylon leaves, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The French toast was so damn delicious but a bit indulgent. I do wish I could taste more of the peanuts. My son loved his bolo bao. We also shared a hot bowl of macaroni soup with Spam and lettuce. Thinking back, I regret not trying the Spicy Satay Beef Instant Noodle. I will have to look for this back in the states. The aunties working here are just the most adorable, very kind and welcoming. One of them took the time to help us navigate the huge menu and recommended a few items. I would come back again and again if I could. I have a mad love for these iconic HK Style Cafes aka Cha Chaan Tengs. These affordable quick-paced restaurants were influenced by the city's 150 years of British rule. Aside from the classic breakfast items, they also offer many delicious rice and noodle dishes in the afternoon.

We got here fairly early, so we didn't have to wait for a table. Service was as expected - quick, efficient, and no nonsense. A tell-tale sign of a good HK cafe. The food just hit the spot for me, bringing me right back to my childhood memories of eating this on weekend mornings at our local HK cafe. Note that they don't accept foreign credit cards, so be prepared with cash, Octopus, or Alipay.

It is a chain…read morecafe located throughout Hong Kong's 3 areas just like Tsui Wah, but in my opinion I like what I get at Tai Hing. This location is inside the New Town Mall in Tsuen Wan, on the 2nd floor. The restaurant is not big, but enough for everyone to sit comfortably. To save space, all of the utensils are inside the drawers of each table. So if you don't know where they are, now you know. As a Cantonese cafe, you pay at the front of the restaurant before you leave. The price point is a little higher than regular local cafes, but still cheaper than Tsui Wah. Also, the quality of food does match the price that you are paying. So it's quite fair. Some of my favorite dishes, BBQ Pork and Roasted Duck combo, Soy Sauce Chicken, and Sweet and Sour Pork. I suggest ordering a combo since it comes with soup or drink, a side of rice, and a side of veggie. Since Hong Kong has lots of British influence, the afternoon tea option almost exist anywhere. At Tai Hing, the dishes are at a discounted price during afternoon tea time, which is around 2:30 to 5pm. My tip to you, go during afternoon tea time for a discount, but just go anytime to try it out. I know I will again.

There's a line outside of the restaurant when I arrived, but I only had to wait for 20 minutes. The place is not that big, so my friend and I had to share a table with 2 strangers (very typical in Hong Kong). I ordered their infamous omelette, a small one. The food arrived quickly. Judging from the size of the omelette, it's made of at least 3-4 eggs. My small omelette was a little burnt, but it was stuffed with a big amount of sliced ham, and you could see the juice oozing out of the omelette. To wash it down of my system, I ordered one of my favorite go-to drinks at a Cha Chaan Teng - Iced lemon tea with less sweet and less ice. For those of you who have not tried an iced lemon tea at a Hong Kong style cafe, it is unlike the canned iced tea that you get where the taste of lemon and tea is overshadowed by the amount of syrup. The iced lemon tea in a typical Hong Kong style cafe is made of fresh lemon slices and brewed tea (and you could request the amount of syrup to be added). It's a refreshing drink. Overall, the service here is efficient and I definitely see that the decor and everything are nostalgic to a lot of people living in Hong Kong. They still write down the price of your order on a piece of paper off of a memo pad as your receipt which is the very old fashioned way of taking an order at a Hong Kong style cafe. Go try this place while you still can.

Both were soooo good, hot or cold. I don't think the macaroni/ham soup or the egg ham toast were anything special, and would not bother ordering these again. The place is super popular, but the line moves quick. You may be seated with strangers at the same table (seems to be common practice in busy HK restaurants). Service was questionable, but I also saw a video online that they are purposely (& famously?) rude to the customers. What made me laugh was that we had barely sat down (my butt touched the seat for 0.1 second) and the waiter already wanted our order. When we said we needed extra time to go over the menu first, we got a bit of a death stare from the waiter. Their concept seems to be "come in, eat right away, and get the hell out!" I had been forewarned by my friend about the service here though, so I wasn't surprised. I'd still come again just for the pudding.

One thing to keep in mind, you might need to share table with other customers. I ordered the classic meal, macaroni with soup and ham, with scramble eggs, and buttered bread on the side. This meal also comes with a drink, and I ordered Hong Kong milk tea. The milk tea was smooth and authentic. If you want to experience 'Hong Kong' culture, this is the place for you.
