I never mince admitting that I am a bakery fanatic.
I basically fall in love with every single shop that sell baked goods and will love almost every single items it sells (except for puff pastry and croissants...I have trained myself into not liking it and their butteriness); the liking will be even stronger if it is a small scale bakery. Domie Cake Shop fits perfectly into this description and is one of my all time favorites.
Interestingly, it is not the bread and buns in the cake shop that interests me; rather it is the mini meringues that keep me visiting this joint time after time. Meringues are not common in Hong Kong; you could only find them in expensive supermarkets and they often cost quite a bit. In Domies, the mini meringues come in boxes that cost about $35 but there are so many of them that it is impossible to finish them in one go. The only type they sell are the ones studded with bits of almonds and you can tell after one bite whether the meringues are freshly baked. New meringues tend to have a marshmallowy chewy center, whereas when they stand overnight, the chewy center will become crumbly and breaks apart when you bite into it.
Pretty good as it is for a teatime snack, you can add a little twist and make it into another dessert item -- eaton mess. Whip up some cream, dice up any soft fruit you like, strawberries and mangoes are rather good, crumble in several of those meringues into the mixture then mix.
