3.2 km•Happy Valley, Hong Kong Island

I must sound like a total geek for saying this, but I adore this bus line. i live in Happy Valley…read moreso according to most of hong Kong, it's not the most convenient place to be. I beg to differ. This bus line makes everything all better. It takes me from Happy Valley all the way to Western district (if I chose to). In the mornings, the buses are so frequent, it comes nearly once every 5 minutes. In the beginning when you're lining up, it looks a little daunting because the lineup sometimes stretches to the end of the block, but because the buses in the morning are so frequent and the buses are pretty much empty when they come pick you up, the line moves extremely fast. I like this line because it not only takes me to work in Central but it also stops through the main places I normally go, namely Wan Chai, Admiralty, Sheung Wan, Sai Wan, Kennedy Town. Sometimes there are traffic jams, but come on, you can expect traffic jams no matter what you're taking. It takes about 20 minutes door to door from Happy Valley to Central in the mornings. On the way home however, during rush hour, it can take up to 40 minutes. The bus route is also cheap as chips, only $3.4 per ride. It makes stops at all the crucial places, such as Pacific Place, Southern Playground, Tin Lok Lane, close to Star Street, BOC tower, Landmark, Hang Seng bank/escalators, Western Market, etc. etc. I've recommended this bus route to so many people already, haven't gotten any complaints so far.

If you live in Sha Tin, bus number 182 is probably no stranger to you. This bus runs from Sha Tin…read moreall the way to Central, making stops at Causeway Bay, Wan Chai and Admiralty on its way, and hitting the same stops on the way back. When I first moved to Sha Tin and started taking this bus, the frequency at which it comes astounded me - I could miss it and only be annoyed at myself for a mere ten minutes - often less, actually - before another one starts to come my way! You never have to wait long for a 182, I can assure you. Taking the 182 all the way from Central back to Sha Tin, sans traffic, is actually one of my favorite ways to return home. I normally alight at Statue Square, which is, in my opinion, a better place to wait for a bus than at the stops before it because those are the busiest parts of Des Voeux Road Central. Getting on there - well, basically at or anywhere before the last stop of Wan Chai, should secure you a seat. If it's peak hour, there's no helping it but there will be insane traffic jam, especially when the bus gets to Hennessy Road and close to the Cross Harbour Tunnel. You might think that the jam's over once you get over to Kowloon side, but you're wrong! All these jams will buy me about an hour-long nap, which feels amazing after a long day. When there isn't a jam, you can get from Central to Sha Tin in, I would say, less than forty minutes. That's still a longer duration than if you were to take the MTR, but the bus is a much more comfortable option. There's no need to make all those interchanges, and it's pretty hard to get a seat on the MTR even when it isn't rush hour. With the bus, you get to sit comfortably the whole ride and you don't have to do any walking once you're on it! But at $16, taking the 182 is quite a bit more expensive than taking my usual route, which is a bus to Hung Hom and then taking the train. The bus is normally $9.3 and taking the train is less than $3 (thank you, student discounts!), so I save a little this way. This route is much faster at peak hours too than taking the 182, because while there's no avoiding the jam to, and through, the Cross Harbour Tunnel, at least there won't be that ridiculous traffic at Kowloon Tong! It's a matter of opinion, really - but while the 182 has its merits, I would prefer to change to taking the train at Hung Hom to avoid that rush hour traffic!

You booked a cheap flight because it was...wow, so cheap that you had to take it, and you didn't…read morethink about how to get to/from airport at those horrible times in the morning and/or night. I hear you! But worry not, N11 might as well be the solution to your anxiety. For my early morning flight (at 7.40 am) I had to be at the airport a couple of hours earlier, so Airport Express wasn't an option. Cab wasn't an option either, as I was travelling on my own so it'd end up being really expensive. So...bus? I looked up transport options at the Airport's website and then went onto Citybus' to check routes and timetables. As I had never taken any other kind of transportation tan train or cab, I had no idea about the existence of this service. Their website is a little confusing to use in the beginning, but as soon as you get around to finding your bus service they've come up with a few features that it's going to make your travel a lot easier. For example, you can get a pdf version to print for your journey with starting and ending points, fare, timetables, addresses for the bus stops and so on. I did that and took it with me, so on the early morning I knew exactly where the stop was and what time I had to be there. Surely, it's a city night bus, and it goes to the airport, so expect it to be packed with suitcases and to be a little busy. It goes through every stop and takes around 45 minutes to get there. And it's cheap; I paid 31HKD Wan Chai - Airport, not bad. So if you're on an early flight and are considering taking the bus, go ahead: a little bit of a longer trip than in a cab, but reliable and a lot cheaper.

First of all, it's the local's choice. (#1) More people line up for this A21 because it hits many if not most of the popular hoods in Kowloon. It is also only $33HKD each way, payable via the Octopus card. Drivers aren't likely to speak much English, so have it ready upon entrance. There are cameras all throughout the bus. If you think your luggage is going to get stolen, you can always keep your eye on the monitors within the bus. There is also semi-decent WiFi on the bus and most everyone will be on their smartphones within minutes of hitting the road. The ride is smooth and easy and like all things in Hong Kong, the AC is on fleek. I personally like to zone out with these rides, which is a nice departure from the fast paced nature of the city's culture. Of course, this ride isn't for everyone. It's a good 45 minutes pending traffic and sometimes you might end up sharing your seat with some random traveler who may or may not fall asleep on you. (#2) Hence, avoid the peak hours and you should be able to covet your space without much interruption. __________ (#1) i.e. the most affordable option. This is not a stereotype. (#2) If I have somehow done this to you, my apologies.
