Tai Tung has a long history in Hong Kong. It is famous for their wife cakes and pineapple buns…read more They were one of the major players in getting pineapple buns recognized as one of Hong Kong's 480 intangible cultural heritages in June of 2014. I recently visited this famed bakery and tried their original wife cake and one that is green bean and ginger flavored. Both were warm, flaky and gooey in the middle. I loved that the original was not too sweet and had an extremely fresh flavor. The green bean and ginger was also really interesting. I liked that there was just a hint of ginger and that it wasn't overpowering. Because I didn't learn until later that they were also famous for their pineapple buns during my first visit, I had to return to check them out. I bought an original pineapple bun and a Tai Tung pineapple bun. The original one was rather disappointing. It might have been that I didn't get one that was fresh out of the oven and it was cold that day so they cooled down quicker than normal. The top wasn't especially crispy and the bottom was actually kind of rubbery. The Tai Tung pineapple bun is interesting because it has pineapple inside! I didn't think that the pineapple filling actually added too much pineapple flavor to the bun though. Although unique, I was also a little bit disappointed with this one. I would say stick with the wife cake and skip the pineapple buns from here.

FOOD Silky smooth tofu, you really can't ask for more. I chose the hot tau fu fa and I was blown away. It was only $9. I had the tau fu fa at Lamma Island and I must say that this store blew those ones out of the water. The tofu would just melt in your mouth. I want another bowl just thinking about it. You can add more brown sugar or ginger sugar water if you like your tau fu fa to be a bit sweeter. The ginger infused sugar water gives the dish a bit of a kick - you can barely taste the ginger but it adds some spice to the tofu. They also sell bottled soy milk so you can get one for the road. SERVICE/ATMOSPHERE Quick turnaround and service. They served the tofu before I even got a chance to pay. Efficiency at its finest. There is limited seating so don't expect this to be a place where you can sit and chat. The guys were friendly and were helpful when I asked for recommendations. Will definitely go again - this time I'll be sure to bring a few bowls back home.

Yes there is another shop that sells this too, but the other shop has other options to add into the classic.

Hong Kong wet markets are the less pretentious version of North American farmer's markets. Don't…read moreget me wrong, I love both. Farmer's markets to me are a great place to get local produce but then you also get stuff like hipster coffee, cucumber/avocado/kale water, and funky cheeses. But these wet markets are something else. Less refined, but feeling like the real deal. Here you walk around hanging cuts of meat and tanks of seafood. Take in that raw stench and realize that cow stomach hanging from a hook could be in your next bowl of noodles. Tai Po Hui is indoors with air conditioning, already one step above traditionally outdoor street stalls, but you still get that authentic feeling. Vendors are talk-shouting across the stands to each other. People are picking out the best cut of steak, the fattest fish, the plumpest chicken feet. This is where the neighborhood comes to shop, haggle, and grab cheap eats. I'm sure there are many other wet markets around Hong Kong, but this one is very large and very clean. The freshness of the food is remarkable. The shrimp are bouncing around on top of each other, the fish are still swimming energetically. And as someone who did not grow up in Hong Kong, I saw species I've never seen before, like beautiful Lilac-coloured clams and rose apples. I never went to the cooked food centre, but I'm sure it's as impressive and diverse as the ground level market. This feels like a common market for the common folk, but it can also be an exotic food journey for tourists. I cannot recommend going to a wet market enough and Tai Po Hui Market is a great choice. It's truly a unique experience to get a taste of local culture, figuratively and literally. This, of course, is juxtaposed by the fact that the parking lot is an absolute mess of Mercedes, BMWs, and all manners of rich cars from the nearby millionaires who like to live in Tai Po. Just uh...take the subway. :) (53/100) - 2017

As an avid dessert lover, next stop must be Dalloyau! Dalloyau is a famous French pastry shop and it has over 30 shops at 6 countries. My friend made the reservation at Dalloyau on 8pm, we walked over there right after our dinner. The entrance is classy and elegant, you have to pass by all the dessert counters and able to glance all the sweets before the dining area. OMG!!! It's so tempting already..... We got seated on long velvet sofa at the corner, it's comfy and privacy. The menu was small and pricey but I still willing to everything on menu. Religieuse Caramel - the religieuse tasted fantastic, the caramel cream was rich and creamy, the choux light and crispy and the crunch provided by the streusel was delicious. Opera Cake - It originally created by Dalloyau!! Authentic opera cake is 3-layers of almond sponge with coffee syrup and chocolate cream and chocolate ganache. The strong flavour with joconde, buttercream, ganache and the glaze, tasted complex but amazing. Dalloyau cake - Almond meringue, praline cream and crushed caramelized hazelnut. It's chewy and nutty. Macarons - It's perfectly sweet and crispy on the shell. Molten cake - Molten cake was great but I would expect such a class pasty shop to make stunning dessert rather than mediocre molten cake. Crème brulee - It's favorable, creamy and tasty. Overall, all the desserts were great but not the best I had. For sure, they're the one of the best pasty shop in Hong Kong.

Fortunately this was not too hard to find after spending some time walking from Yuen Long train station and wandering around. It was on a fairly busy section of a street closed to car traffic, where it can be considered as a short mini night market like strip. One look and you can tell this is a very old traditional business with a niche offering (and of course targeting a niche audience). Lots of very old school Cantonese classic dessert/snacks that are not sugared up the yin yang like a deep fried bacon beignet. They offer several samples, and I had the pleasure of trying several varieties, of which I instantly became a fan. Their signature peanut candy, is significantly tastier than the peanut brittle candy (e.g. See's Candies). Perhaps it is a result of using the Asian variety of peanut (likely by way of Indonesia) or a particular variety that has a more intense flavor than the ones grown in America (usually larger, less flavor even if you roast them). There is a nut candy plastered with black sesame seeds, that one is also quite a winner. The most interesting one has to be the candy made primarily with pumpkin seeds. It is hard to describe the texture but is unique in that I have never seen it before. It was an even a bigger pleasure to be able to see one of the employees taking a huge batch that was cooked, and laid out in one big giant goopy ball, and he was trying frantically to stir the mixture. My guess is that the next step, it has to be roasted, cooled then carefully divided up (and formed into bite sized cubes). Hard to beat fresh, hand made good chit. Labor intensive, but not expensive at all. There are no preservatives in the candies, so they will last at most two months according to the staff. Perfect gifts for families locally, or even abroad. Please keep supporting these traditional local businesses. If we do not do our part to keep them alive, they will start dropping like flies, and all we will be left with are high priced fusion or western trendy restaurants and bling shops. Don't keep chasing the next food trend, understand and appreciate food culture and history. And hopefully everything will not be lost.
