I didn't know of this place until I moved recently to a nearby area. this unassuming little shop…read morewhich opens onto a back street in Tai Wai, serves what I could only be describe as the best Rice Roll (Cheung fun) in town. Now i know this item is available in many Chinese restaurants as s dim sum item, but there are a couple of qualities of this place which adds to the high praise. Rice Rolls is steamed rice paste, effectively, and the standard for whether it is a nicely made depends on how smooth it is. Rice roll is supposed to be soft, smooth and evenly distributed (i.e. not in lumps). This place does Cheung Fun right- they also do it the old was where rice rolls are made in long strips and depending on how much you want they cut bits out for you into a little sections. This has always been a breakfast favourite and with some soy sauce, sweet sauce (hoisin sauce), chilli sauce this makes it a breakfast that you will have for a long time to come. Aside from the Cheung Fun, they also serve siu mai (fish maw dumpling), fake fin soup and freshly made soya milk. I can attest that these are all very nice as well. Drawbacks? Well you better ask for take away because the shop itself seats around 8 at most and in the summer its unbearably hot because there is no A/C. You also sit by the side of the road and being half exposed to the elements is not a nice feeling.

Hong kong have been introducing this Kansai speciality as early as when i was still 5 or 6 years old. I remember asking my mom to buy be a set of those from food stalls in Park n Shop which came in sixes; although one should never be too hopeful about the food stalls in Park n Shop yet the disappointment that came along was so great that it had made me once lose faith in this street food staple of Japan. It was not until I had a couple from this joint have I restore hope in HK style takoyaki. Other than the usual ingredients, i particularly like the cabbage they add to the batter; the crunch and the fresh taste of the greens lightens up the starchy and doughiness of the balls. The sauce is also an important component in the whole takoyaki eating experience. The slight tang of the barbecue sauce cut through the dough making it less rich and could easily finish the whole box. For less than $20 you can have a box of happiness in you hands; it could definitely be a lunch at its entirety for those who have a humble appetite, whereas for those who could not be satisfied that easily, it would still be a decent portion for a snack in between meals. Taking the price factor into consideration; it is pretty hard to beat~

They specialize in egg waffles (obviously) but also do fish balls/meat on sticks. They're right next door to a Gong Cha. There seems to be stiff competition in this area for egg waffles as LKK and Mamma Pancake are nearby. We stopped on a Saturday afternoon and didn't have to wait. They have four types of egg waffles (original, taro, chocolate and sesame coconut) and a peanut butter waffle. - Original egg ball ($18 HKD) - I shared this with a friend. Like how they're made fresh here and had good turnover. Original is pretty good (but I liked the flavoured one more that I sampled). Would go back to try the other flavours. Cheap, tasty snack.

Today, I would like to introduce you guys to this Taiwanese food stall. I suppose I would just call this 5 Degree as there was not any English name for this. One of its specialties is the Chinese pancakes and some prefer calling it flaky scallion pancake. It is a savor flatbread folded with oil and scallions. It originates in Chinese culture and it is huge in Taiwan. For western pancakes, they are made from batter but this is made from dough. The pancakes were very crispy and freshly made in front of you. So beware. You could taste the scallions right away and the entire pancakes were just so satiny and smooth that you could eat that all day. I remember when I tried that in Taiwan, some of them were always just a little too chewy but not from here. Apart from the Chinese pancakes, try the bubble tea a.k.a. tapioca milk tea, which is also one of the signature Taiwanese drinks. I am sure I will come back to this street again given how many different stalls it has here.
