Not sure where I read the write up on this spot, but my husband and I popped in around 1PM on a Saturday on our way to the Tim Burton exhibition at Taikoo Place. There was about a 10 minute wait, for they were busy and there is probably seating for about 40 or so inside. Pretty inexpensive and pretty interesting tasting food that advertises their approach to cooking as "no additives, more vegetables and minimal fat." I had the veggie curry with rice and I would agree that the veggies were bountiful and more varied compared to similar places selling something similar. Hot, fresh, fast, full of good veggies, affordable and more interesting tasting than your average lunch set...for a pescatarian like me, this check's all the boxes! They are not doing anything culinarily outside the box at Camper's, but it tastes good and I think the treat is in its simplicity. The ambiance it outfitted for "camping" and their theme, which provides some ambiance outside the hospital white wall atmostphere of many easy, asian lunch joints. Staff wearing flannel checkered plaid, cashier wearing a fishing fat, bait and tackle gear on the wall, wooden cabin slats for walls. They get kudos for a unique little theme...although not sure how it ties into Japanese Curry. We will go back when we are in the area again.

I find their style of food interesting and not something common I would see at restaurants, in particular, the rice sets. I've had beef and egg over rice, as well as the oxtail with vegetables with rice. Both were really good, and large portion sizes. When I was eating the oxtail with vegetables there were a lot of vegetables which I liked, but nearing the end I struggled to finish all my food as I was getting quite full (which says a lot, considering I generally can eat a lot). It gets quite busy for lunch and dinner so I would recommend going a bit earlier if you would like to avoid lines.

Cute, stylish Japanese restaurant, and quick service. The pork soft bone is incredibly tender in both the dinner set and the curry.

Nice curry of mild spiciness. Consistent cooking through out years. The pork stew is nice too.

I have wanted to come here for a while. It happened I am alone tonight and wandered around here. This is a good type of food to even eat alone. And they did design the place to serve some lone wolf, or lone tiger in this case. I have to say, the menu is not easy to understand. But soon when you figured out, it is actually not bad. I have picked the recommended Hungry Tiger to feed myself of my hunger. It looked kind of small, but it actually pretty filling. The Japanese rice is round and soft. Curry well cooked like he usual curry sauce, different from want the Sama curry at central, this is the traditional Japanese curry. Surprised that they did not ask for spicy level, probably not adjustable. The hungry tiger was actually only so so, I trusted that individually order would have been better. The problem with the dish is that they put fries on top. The fries are nothing special, but it fills you up, mob your rice and meat of the curry sauce and making it hard to navigate the food around. Chicken tastes good. Beef burger meat is ok. Pork was nothing special. The sausage taste okay but too little too few. And way add a bone back when sausage is designed to remove the bone. They serve beers and wine and sake. Probably best to avoid it. Don't think the environment is that targeted for alcohol. If you really want to drink, beer is okay, but standard Japanese draft is expected. Service is so so. Efficiency oriented. However, the food took longer than expected to arrive. Overall, I might come back but not too amazing.

Easy to order: the menu is basically a Curry/Tomato Sauce Choice + Protein/Vegetable + Sides Combo. They give you a LOT of sauce, so your rice will be swimming in the sauce, which is awesome actually, versus other more delicate ahem* stingier, Japanese curry places. The tonkatsu is solid and portions generous, the other meats are decent as well and you can add some vegetables (cabbage, corn etc) as sides if you are looking for fiber. There are full salads on offer, and full vegetarian curry is also possible, as my Indian friend found out (and liked); the fries are nothing special, save space for other stuff. I find the flavors heavier, tangier and slightly sweeter than the usual Japanese curry, which I like. I've tried all the other Japanese curry spots in Causeway Bay, and this is now the only spot I hit up if I'm craving for Japanese curry. A meal with a drink will set you back a bit less than HKD 200, not a bad deal for lunch/dinner in Causeway Bay.

Immediately after being seated, I took a look around the the interior, and spotted a Hitachino Nest Owl T-shirt! I asked and it costs HK$120. Quite pricey, hmm... But back to the food! You have option to choose your spice level, your curry soup base, and your meat / vegetable accompaniment. I ordered the level 5 coconut marathon chicken curry while my friend ordered a level 10 tomato-based hungry bear (with hamburger patty) curry. Both were SAMA-licious! I didn't need to order any extra veggies because the pepper, okra, eggplant, broccoli, carrot and half egg were pretty sufficient for me (a girl). If you're looking for quality curry, go to SAMA!

Located on the corner roundabout on Gough, this Sheung Wan hot spot (#1) has attracted quite a following to an otherwise quiet area of the neighborhood. Like most places in the city, SAMA is tiny. There are only a handful of tables to accommodate groups (which likely seat 20 at most), so I wouldn't be surprised if there were waits during good weather nights. The decor has a modern edge to it, along with the consistent corporate urbanized graphics one would expect from a Japanese chain. The staff speak English decently, but Canto is the way to go here. How the curry portion of the menu works: 1) Choose A Spice Level: Baby Bear (0-5), Adult Bear (6-15), Crazy Bear (16-30). 2) Choose A Soup Base: Tomato, Coconut, Prawn (Seafood flavor) 3) Choose A Curry Entreé: Chicken, Pork, Seafood, Vegetarian Options ranging $78-128 One can also choose additional toppings from extra meats (+$30), veggies (+$10), tempura (+$30), and eggs (+$10). The menu is available in English, Chinese, and Japanese. There is a nice selection of Asian craft beers as well as nice variety of sides. My group and I enjoyed a variety of curry dishes, with the most notable being the Oink Oink ($96) spice level 10 and Ocean Trophy ($108) spice level 15. There was one with the Vegetarian Bear ($78) but with a solid spice level of 20. The flavors are extremely potent and the spice is definitely no joke. I thought SE Asian curries gave me trouble, but the veggie curry had me feeling the sweat beads. I like the punishment. Our array of sides were also tasty. I enjoyed the Tempura add on, as well as the Curry Fries ($28), Shishitou Brussel Sprouts ($58), Hokkaido Spinach ($72), and Garlic Prawns ($72). I wasn't super crazy about the Spiced Chicken Karaage ($68), Hokkaido Corn Croquettes ($18), or their Nagoya Style Curry Wings ($28). A slight eyeroll to the gimmicky t-shirt and recipe books on display but I'm sure there are some serious fanboys / girls out there. Parking is limited but doable in this part of HK. They accept all credit cards and are open till just before midnight. ______________ (#1) Literally. No pun intended.

Inside is a small Japanese restaurant with a few tables, a homey vibe, and excellent sushi. We were immediately greeted by the friendly waiter, who seemed to be a combo waiter/manager/(maybe owner?) type -- it was just him and the chef working on a Saturday early evening. Arriving around 6:30-7 or so, we were seated immediately and only the second table in the restaurant. Although things picked up a bit by the time we left at 8-8:30, it was nice to see that you have a good chance at a walk-in table on a Saturday night. We ordered the Seaweed Salad with Vinegar (not my thing, but my wife loved it), Salmon and Yellowtail Nigiri, one Spicy Tuna Roll, one Spicy Scallop Roll and two Asahis and prepared to dig in. I was truly surprised at how good the sushi was -- not because I expected it to be bad, but because I did not expect it to be that good. The Salmon Nigiri in particular was fresh and sweet, and the Spicy Scallop Roll was nothing short of fabulous. They are served as an inside-out roll with scallop, crunchy bits, and a nick kick accompanied by spicy mayo on the bottom. Slathering the roll in the spicy mayo and dipping it in soy sauce made for a magnificent mouthful. It was so good that we ordered a second. The Spicy Tuna Roll was also quite good, but the Spicy Scallop Roll was the star for me. The waiter was friendly, funny and attentive, and really made you feel like you were having a low-key dinner in his living room. It's exactly the kind of place that I'm thrilled to have in the neighborhood for when I want to go out for dinner but don't really feel like making a big production of it. Excellent food, relaxed environment and a good value -- I'll be back, and often.

Conveniently located at Nathan Road near the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, we decided to have our final meal in Hong Kong at Daikiya Japanese Restaurant. It's a very solid all-you-can-eat option with two thick notebooks of pictured items to choose from. The raw and the cooked, the fish and the meat, the meal and the dessert... Sashimi - The usual suspects abound (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, etc.), but they also have hokkigai (surf clam), amaebi (sweet shrimp), Hokkaido hotate (scallop), and nishin (Japanese herring with roe). Served on a bed of ice and decorated with artificial flowers, each platter was well-plated... and delicious! Nigiri - There are plenty of winners here, but let's focus on the one that topped the list - Grilled Scallop with Crab Oil and Garlic. Seared enough to give that burnt flavor, dabbed with crab oil, then topped with roasted garlic... Need I say more? This was the highlight of our meal and, yes, my younger daughter and I had this over and over and over! Worthy runners-up - Grilled Flatfish and Prawn with Black Fish Roe. Rolls - An assortment of maki (sushi roll), temaki (hand roll), gunkan-maki (ship roll), and sashimi rolls was on the menu as well, but we were able to try only a few. The Mango and Soft-Shell Crab Roll was too small and had more cucumber than anything else. There simply were better options to be had. Grilled - Surf and Turf! Shrimp, scallop, oyster, lamb chop, beef, chicken, pork, and even pineapple. The best dish was the Sautéed Diced Beef with Garlic. Perfectly seasoned and cooked medium, these beef chunks were so tender and tasty! Dessert - Gotta save room for some (or all) of these - mochi, macaron, ice cream, tiramisù, brownie, crème brûlée, fruit, nut, and so on. We indulged in their special Milk Top, which had a limit of one flavor per person. We tried the Romantic Moment and Green Tea Harmony, which had soft-serve ice cream, red bean/paste, mochi balls, jellies, and rice crispies. The only way to cap off an AYCE! After restocking on calories, we were ready to head back to the hotel and then to HKIA. Daikiya was just what the doctor ordered to fill up our bellies before leaving. We totally enjoyed our stay in Hong Kong, but we had to wrap up our adventure. It was time to say goodbye... for now...
